- Took my daily driver 2005 Subaru WRX STI in the dirt at DirtFish Rally School for an SCCA Rally Cross event a few months ago!

Best thing I ever saw at Dirt Fish was the Roadkill guys driving what I believe was a 69 Dodge Charger. Looks more fun than AWD any day.

you prob want to play with the center diff settings and make the car slightly more rear biased with the power split to get the rear to slide out more and better turn in.

No, you have to have the clutch in or it will kill the car instantly.

TurgBurglar nah it doesn't have an auto centre diff clutch, which is weird because Toyota had that on their celicas for a long time

im not sure about the earlier models but all new STI's disengage the center diff when the hand brake is pulled. obviously the clutch still has to be used.

Okay I'm really stupid with cars and I'm trying to learn but are all rally cars front wheel drive?
Actually most rally cars are all wheel drive but you can take anything into the dirt it. The cars in the video are just normal cars with a couple mods but real rally car which are fully modded and only made to be driven in the dirt are like i sad mostly awd since you have way more grip in the corners and have better 0-60 mph (0-100 km/h) times.
Yeah like Th3shot said, real competition rally cars are mainly AWD because they need to be able to launch/accelerate on all terrain and maintain grip around corners that haven't got tarmac. That said, a majority of race cars are actually RWD, mostly because on a track AWD isn't necessary to maintain grip, and also AWD's add weight and tend to cause understeer (although torque vectoring help that these days) but as you can imagine, understeer in a formula 1 car would be disastrous, not to mention drivetrain power loss (every time you add more components to a drivetrain you lose more power because of friction) and extra fuel consumption. However there ARE rally events that only use FWD or RWD specifically, just for an extra kind of competition.
Are there any races that are specifically for FWD? I did not know that wow.
