Pre-composing some of your layers can help avoid some of those conflicts you were experiencing (IE: The planet's lighting effects). Also, to help with perspective, you can create a temp secondary camera and split your view into two views (first view being the main camera and the secondary one being the second camera). Once you have the two views, the second camera can be offset towards the right or left side of your primary focus object (in this case the planet), allowing you to see where your 3D objects are in regards to one another on the Z-axis.
You are correct when you said that the 3D worlds are all composed within their specific engine, and you will somewhat notice this when doing a split view (as really the 3D objects are more like sprites); but, you will have enough information provided to be able to accurately place objects within your composed world.

TO ALL THOSE HAVING ISSUES WITH ASTEROIDS SHADOWS:
I solved it by activating ambient occlusion and bring it to the darkest possible, and then in Physical Environment, Exposure: 0,00 Gamma: 1,00, Lightning Influence: 25% Tint: White.
