There was a moment in 1987, when a feisty and driven Joan Baez thought, "enough is enough." She rolled up her sleeves and accepted an offer from artist manager and label executive Danny Goldberg to join his latest start-up, Gold Castle, and start making records again. That decision led to three albums whose reappearance in 2016 should be cause for no small amount of rejoicing in Joan Baez circles, especially by those who might've been looking the other way (musically, most likely), or just missed them entirely the first time around. So quickly did they seem to come and go.
The 33 collective tracks contained on Recently, Diamonds and Rust in the Bullring, and Speaking of Dreams hold their own as some of the greatest song selection sequences of Joan's entire discography. All three Gold Castle titles were produced by Alan Abrahams at Capitol Records Studios in Hollywood.
In a career spanning over 55 years and over 30 albums, Joan Baez is still touring and still mesmerising audiences all over the world. Her social activism has provoked and inspired, encouraging many other performers who followed to stand up for their beliefs.

Brothers In Arms - LYRICS
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day you'll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And no longer burn
To be brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
There's so many different worlds
So many different's suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
Were fools to make war
On our brothers in arms - Hudba

Many thanks for this and the accompanying information and lyric. I came to Joan Baez in the early 1960s. In my eyes the stature of Joan Baez increases through the years. Her humanity and dignity continue to shine through.
Who's listening to this beautiful song in this time ??

She doesnt need a guitar with that voice.
Mark doesnt need a voice with that guitar.
Great comment. A laugh out loud one, but it is true.
Arguably Mark Knopfler’s greatest song. I wouldn’t have trusted it to very many other singers, but Joan Baez does it proud!
Agree. This is a soldiers song to the core. No righteous person wants to kill another human, no matter how much we have been to taught to hate. I call a Brothers in Arms any soldier that became a soldier with honorable intention. We have been all lied to badly at times and too often, our 'enemy' was doing nothing more than what we would have done in our own country, protecting our family and country. Dune , U.S. Army 67-70.
@@dunexapa1016 Very well said. This song really speaks to what you have said.

Joan has such an hauntingly beautiful voice … I’m 70 years old this year and it seems that I’ve been in love with Joan forever …. I’ve been lucky enough to see her in concert a couple of times over the years and her incredible persona and voice has kept me captivated … in my heart she’s Forever Young ❤️
Me too !
I'm a couple of years along from you.......
Later on in life, I realized Joan far too liberal for me.
But the beauty of her singing transcends that.
She is an incredible talent, and incredible voice, an incredible person.
I've been listening to her shamelessly and ecstatically for over 50 years now.......and am blessed for it.
@@rollinmckim4719 You poor devil.
You are lucky, very few rock or folk singers come to Green Bay, Wisconsin
If I would have first heard sing like this and she showed any interest in me...I'd never leave her or forsake her.
She raises this beautiful still resonant song to a new level ..
I have always heard the version by Dire Straits - I heard it when I came home from the Falklands War - a shit show I was 20 with the 4-2. I had buried those days my "baptism of fire" my first war... and now today 6/10/2023 I came here... and my world is crumbling apart again - God why do you remind me of this and the other wars and battles that I can not tell.
Just read this & I really hope you're doing okay now. I'm about six years younger than you & experienced the shit show from this side of the world. My father (also 4-2, 40 & all else from late 1950's till 1983/4) He wanted to be there beside you all at the time but ended up being one of the senior NCO's who visited family back in the UK. He's very old & frail now but he'd still be the kind of man to listen to you, he'd hate to think that you were feeling this way.
Mounts Kent & Harriet? In the UK we don’t say, “Thank you for your service”, but we should do. Thank you. Respect.
This track always gets to me, whether it is being performed by MK or JB. It is incredibly atmospheric and evocative. Written by a genius in remembrance of heroes…
A better world is near.. Look I am making all things new.. The Bible..Rev.21.3,4.

I fell in love with this woman's voice as a young man in college. Almost 50 years later she still has the power to move me. Thank you Joan
Me too
Me too. Early 1960s. I'd be age 15/16. There was a lot going on politically - no change there then.
A Vietnam Veteran friend of mine summed her up perfectly when he said, 'I never agreed with her politics but you could not fault her sincerity and commitment.' I bought her albums in the 1960s and saw her in concert three times - 2012, 2014 and May 2018. 2012 was a week after my Mother died, 2014 was the just before the last time I saw my younger Brother alive. This was posted on my 67th birthday and it prompted me to attend the 2018 concert.

They haven't been born as yet!!!
How is it possible for anyone not to love her singing n this song
Very few singers can cover a classic and get away with it. Joan Baez is one of them.
If Joan's version amd Mark Knophlers versions are played by all FREE radio stations through out the world somwonw may hear and STOP WAR ALTOGETHER . i hope . Mike Hogg
I absolutely agree. I'd put Annie Lennox ina similar category. No?
Nah, she sings like a teacher. Needs more rawness
@@pri2816. Then she’d be singing the blues instead of folk!
Bloody shame we didn't have a collaboration between Mark & Joan on this. With her voice and his guitar, it would be incomparable.
True!!!!
I collaborate them in my mind whenever I hear her version of the song!
I was a 22 year old country guy, when I bought "Come from the shadows Album". I was smitten by this intensely pure voice and silken lyrics. Joan, I heard had never had voice lessons.
If she is mediocre, then nearly all other singers before and since are basically hopeless! I had a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat just now, listening to my Favourite track and Joans explanation of the origins of this incredible real life poem sung so poignantly. Masterclass.
Her voice is just as clear and pure as ever. I love it.
How can almost 600 people not be amazed at this rendition of this beautiful song, by such a beautiful woman.
It’s all about awareness. Lack of awareness in all its different forms (including killing our brothers in arms) is currently the greatest threat to our species. IMO, aware people must outbreed the unaware or we’ll surely drown.
Mike Bell, the 600 are still waiting on hearing aids delivery!!
i didn't dislike this but it is vastly inferior the origninal
Bellissimo, è tanto attuale purtroppo, che cosa ci aspetta ancora?
No better moment to listen to this rendition, and think about Joan's love of peace than right here in war torn 2022. God go with you, Ukraine

Had the privilege of seeing Joan on one of her rare visits to the UK - The Apollo Ardwick, suburb of Manchester. Just Joan, a guitar, and an audience in the palm of her hand. And that glorious voice. She finished her first half with an a'capella version of Swing Low Sweet Chariot - she'd actually finished the song and left the stage before a stunned audience could react ... thunderous applause followed. Joan has been my inspiration since my teenage years - she was there in my darkest hours, and my sunlit days ... i owe you Joan xxx
