The books are so humorous and upbeat, you never really get to feel how much Percy suffered, I think the musical really shows how he felt
Eclipse Studios agreed. And in House of Hades, Heroes of Olympus when he falls into the river with Annabeth at the beginning, I think part of the reason the river overtook him and had such a strong grasp over him was because he already felt those feelings. I think Percy masks his despair from others as well as himself with humor. It masks it from us, the readers, also. Someone theorized that Percy was suicidal already before the river in Tartarus, which would be really sad if it was true.
There have been several instances where Percy said something along the lines of ‘I wish I were dead’ the only specific one I can remember is after beckendorf (is that how that’s spelled?) blew up the princess andromeda Percy wished he could actually drown in the ocean. Sometimes you get so caught up in the action that you forget that these teenagers are fighting for their lives and burying friends.
Megan Estabrook good point. On a different note, (in the Heroes of Olympus series) I think Leo is definitely a good example of using comic relief to cover up insecurities. He plainly stated this in “The Lost Hero”, saying that humor was a good way to hide the pain. Take your pick, but I think Leo has a more tragic backstory than Percy, because he lost the ones he cared about, and permanently rather than just a short period of time, like how Percy’s mother vanished.
Also, Leo’s emotional pain, as we know, doesn’t only stop when he was a child. Until Calypso, he always felt like an outsider, especially when Nemesis emphasized this in “Mark of Athena” on page 74. Despite Hazel telling him not to ponder too deeply on her words, he really did take it to heart.

That frame always hits hard. Percy’s been reprimanded and insulted told he was worthless and worth nothing and would never amount to anything his entire life. His friends don’t hate him and they aren’t mad, but he’s convinced they do and they are because of past experiences. He’s built a wall to protect himself but he built it so high that rejection is just something he expects from others.
I feel like thats the story for all demigods
@Fairy Animations, yeah, most demigods have ADHD and dyslexia. And that’s a great point. I can’t believe I didn’t see and correlation between his ADHD and his rejection sensitivity before. Especially when I legit _have_ rejection sensitivity issues and have a few suspicions about ADHD. I’m a complete idiot lmao.

So, with ppl with ADHD, there’s this fun thing called Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria, where we’re super sensitive to even perceived rejection, often spiraling into shit as deep as suicidal ideation. This, of course, is only exacerbated by our tendencies to not, yanno, measure up to others in some settings.
This song??? This song summarizes that feeling *perfectly*. You try and try and try to fit in, but you just keep fucking up over and over again.
Not ADHD myself but I am trying to convince the people in my life to help me with a diagnosis.
I understand this feeling because I have tried to do things like pay attention or not say the wrong thing in a social situation and yet somehoe someone seems to end up hating me for something.
I have wrapped a vacuum cord around my neck and been close to trying to choke myself but at the last minute I didn't, because I heard my family's voice.
I understand bring told off, hated or rejected is super hard and even though I'm not diagnosed I think I understand this and I send out my love to you (if your ADHD) and everyone else including all demigods.
So that’s why I always feel like everyone hates me?

I love how the musical really captures how Percy feels in the books. Like in the books, percys sadness is covered up with jokes, but the musical really shows how he really feels yk.
some times I wonder if people can comprehend the amount of pain physical and emotional pain fictional characters go through. built for it or not there must be so many mental scars that they have to hide just to seem normal. it's very bad for the main protagonists because people look up to them and they have to be a good role model, in control of themselves, sane. many of them could be at the brink of insanity with so much pressure to be perfect and to hide who they really were. ya know... just a sad thought

I WANT TO HUG HIM! The books were so hilarious, we never really realised how messed up Percy's life is. The musical showed how really broke and how much Percy suffered on the inside.

@Hiba Moktar He did fit in. He was very popular, had a lot of friends, girls had crushes on him. But he felt abandoned by his father, and that slowly descended into hate, which is why it was so easy for Kronos to take advantage and use him. He was a hero in the end though.
Fun fact: in the show Luke actually gets a dark reprise of this song!!! It’s sad but it hurts so good!!!

I absolutely love this! Only minor qualm I might have is that in some frames Percy's shirt says CBH instead of CHB, but it's so minor that I only noticed after rewatching this a bunch.
Keep doing what you're doing, the visual storytelling in this is fantastic!!
Or that could even be intentional. To just about anyone they could very well read CBH since they’re dyslexic.

Woah this is such a good animatic! I love the simple silhouettes and the mouth animations were really good I especially liked the one at 1:08! And the quiet moment of him with his mother before he starts to cry was genius! Loved to see all the versions of little Percy and how he matured. Great job!

I just feel so bad for Percy. His entire life he has never felt like he has belonged anywhere. Gabe always put him down, people have bullied him, and Poseidon wasn't really there for him. I mean Poseidon couldn't be with Percy but he could had at least shown a little love. The only person who ever cared for him (Besides Grover) is his mom. When she was taken he felt like he was a no one. He finally found camp Half-Blood, he started to feel a little better then all of a sudden he is told to go on a quest that he might come back from. He only went so he could save his mom but he ended up having to leave her. His mom came back, he saved the world like a million times and through it all he still felt like he didn't belong. The only people keeping him going were his Mom, Grover, and Annabeth. He then got taken away from all of them and had to figure out what to do. He has never felt like he belonged.
Percy, if you read this I just want you to know that I believe in you and that you are amazing. Your courage is amazing and you will always have a special place in my heart.
