Love the video. My home town of Stornoway I miss it so much 😥😥😥. My sister moved back to the island and got married years ago and now she's a crofter. Might go back one day 👌👌. The coffee pot isn't there anymore which is a shame, it had the best coffee on the island 👌👌

Thoroughly enjoyed the video, could do with being a bit longer and taken in more of the town centre. Excellent music; great accordionist; it's been a while since I've heard the box being played. Really need to come home to visit as it's been too long. Overall, very well done 10/10

My journey around Scotland began on the rails from Edinburgh to Inverness in February 2009. Then by bus to Ullapool and ferry to Stornoway. The town was great. The weather was exceptionally perfect... just a touch of weather that did not bother me whatsoever. The taxi driver gave me a 5-pound trip to Lews Castle and surrounding area = and back to Stornoway. The people were surprising in that half were like cousins to me and the others were amazingly stand-offish. A most Beautiful town.

I have to give the Hostel five stars for location, cleanliness, and very fine accomodations. The local taxi service is mostly private guys with a license. They can give anyone a great tour as if they were a tour company. But they do it because they enjoy their city and enjoy those from the mainland and foreign. For $5pounds and about 45 minutes - Lewis Castle with a short stop off (construction), all along the main inlet roads, and around several inner streets - right back to the pub.

My grandfather was born there and left for Canada when he was about 18 or 19 I think. He ended up in Chicago.
I'd love to visit one day. I'm sure there are relatives as I had a cousin that visited there in the 80's and met with some.
What's the best time of year weather wise?

I stayed at the backpacker's hostels in Edinburgh, Inverness, and Stornoway. I was taken back by the elegance of these "youth-type" hostels. They were rate a few stars here in the US for cleanliness and comfort. And the costs were well below $20 (US dollars) per night. The rail trip included my bus from Inverness to Ullapool (a great villiage itself !!) and the ferry to Stornoway. Lets hope next year Scotland can reclaim the Minch waters between the mainland and Lewis after Scotland is FREE

    I agree.
I understand that repetitive cycle that can get people down. I think (and I suspect many will agree) that there needs to be a change or to use a better word...enhancement in the Lewis psyche, a more positive one. That will not pop out of thin air though. Stornoway needs solid investment to crate more meaningful and lasting jobs for a start. I'm curious about what ideas are floating around. The talk of change brings with it a positive eye forward. Better that than a sad eye backwards.

I see you don't like council very much. I wonder what kind of fresh Ideas, if any are in place right now? What's your view on Green energy? I ask this because I know it divides opinion. For me I think that the positives far outweigh the negatives. I look at it like this: People complain that others think lewis is still in the stoneage and It's one of the windiest places in Europe. Windpower is 21st century-cutting edge technology, but the same people say "oh we can't have that".

Again I agree with you on that. The one thing that annoys me is where the power that's generated goes, but as we seen in the last election Scotland looks like it's moving in a direction where we will finally be able to benefit from our natural resources. That potential for the outer Hebrides is monumental in terms of what else has come that way in recent years. As for spoiling the landscape, well I think turbines are a symbol of the 21st century that every country will have soon.

I think you highlight the real issue. Negativity. Negativity spreads it's depressing message through every aspect of Scottish Island life. Make no mistake it's the same all over the mainland but as an Islander you should be aware of where it comes from. Put it like this "they" don't come from the Island or the Scottish mainland, you know what/who I mean? They drum it in you by saying: bad weather, bad systems in place, too windy, cold or boring, they judge and try to change the place. Amen!

Definitely NOT the best Scottish town! Some parts very old and run down. I see that the central car park is still packed...never easy to find anywhere to park in Stornoway. I used to use Tesco's car park and walk from there. Ok in the summer but then midges ruin it! Winters awful..wet and fierce gales. Glad I got through 9 years of it and now happily back in England.
