Awsome video Greg. Its awsome to hear your special guest speak. So back to his 7 strand fence. When he talks about every other wire being hott because other is ground, I'm assuming that means that the wire needs to be hooked to a ground rod somewhere in the system in order to work properly for a positive to ground system??? Thank you

If you had say wires 2,4, and 6 ground on a seven will fence, with all having a continuous connection back to the ground rods by your fencer, would that eliminate the need to place additional ground rods at other place on your perimeter? I can attest about frozen ground and zap. Last winter I was handling my wire with mitts in zero weather. I thought for a while that the wire wasn’t hot. Found out a few minutes later otherwise but it was just a little burning in the palm of my hand. Not like zap I would have otherwise received rich cash feel like a big dog but you.

If someone had just had a few acres cleared with a bulldozer and the ground was fresh dirt to start a new pasture what would you recommend a person do to get good forage going? The person bulldozing is a cattle farmer and recommends I test the soil, like and fertilize accordingly and seed. I'm sure you could offer a more natural solution? If I do not seed then it will be taken back over with whatever native seedbed is there. As of right now its logged land with lots of logging debris and tree tops. The dozer is going to push it all out and give me a clean slate to work with. Planning on running sheep.

I understand the training your animals to the hot wire part, but how do you train your neighbor's cattle to it? I've got neighbors on three sides (all have cattle). One of them has longhorns that like to push on the fence. Will the fence shock through horn contact? Thanks

Any chance goats can survive in coyote country with a tall 5 strand grounded wire? I know one guy from the Topeka area that have big, tough Bighorn Rams (sheep) that killed coyotes that got in his pen. In other words, can a tough , tall grounded fence, 8500volts and 6 joules do the job on small areas to kill buckbrush or is it a total goat sacrifice unless you have a good dog?
Get a guardian dog and sleep well at night!!

What was your first year attending at the FRC in Lineus?
1993 was the first grazing school that I attended at Linneus Missouri. It was the starting point of my grazing education and went forward from there.
Mark didn't mention wire spacing and if the bottom wire was hot or ground. We have 6 wire here, alternating hot and ground, and it didn't work at all with the goats. BUT I never did a training regimen like Mark is mentioning. Goats are now in pastures with woven wire fence. However I would like to try Mark's training method and not have to convert the remaining 7300 feet of hi-tensile to woven wire.
I have did something like Mark with a training session with goats, sheep, cattle, and a donkey. The key is the training. I have all of them together. Of course, I’m on a smaller area but they don’t get out at all. If any of them are close, I just move my poly braid a little bit and they jumped back.
I had goats that would climb woven wire (paige wire) but all the goats respected 3 strand electric...unless the power went out!

@@ryanforbes3021 I think the only reason they stay inside of the woven wire pastures is because there is more browse than they can eat in there and the coyotes are REALLy bad in our valley. Actually had a doe give birth nursing inside of the goat pasture this year because it's the only "safe" place in our little valley. I would see here jump in and out during the day. The fawns stayed inside with the goats until they were big enough to jump out like their momma. The deer and goats didnt mingle 2 much from what I saw tho. Lol.
@@goatsdoingstuff I understand your coyote issues. We dont have many deer in our area anymore. The coyotes chased a doe into my yard last November. Killed and ate her about 50 feet from some pastured pigs. Man, if animals could talk, eh? We never heard a thing, only a few hundred feet from our house.
I'm curious about the Electric Fence -- is the Bottom Wire Hot or Ground ?
Just guessing I would think ground. But anything that's 50/50 I'm usually wrong that's why I don't gamble.

Would the electric netting be sufficient to break new sheep to electric wire?

Would it be better to have the netting inside a fenced lot? Kind of a buffer? I don’t want them to blow thru it and not respect it.

Untrainable could make one a believer in retroactive birth control? Nah I think you're more likely to have a pet dog if guarding isn't their strength! The guardees likely graduate to freezer camp if they are determined to set a bad example. I have met a few people whom I would like to sign up for a euthanasia program would never do it but just saying " youth in Asia " brought a bit of satisfaction when worked into a conversation many years ago.! I am a better person than I was when I told an old lady of forty wearing a mini skirt that she was mutton dressed as lamb. I wish I could go back in time and apologize it likely was envy I never owned hot pants or mini skirts. My Daddy would not have liked it. That was a card that Mum played what would your Father think? I didn't want to see disappointment in his eyes so Mum knew what buttons to push to get results. I enjoyed the interview does it make you interested in giving goats another go someday when you lease a farm that would benefit from their eating habits?
