Great Day Fishing Thanks to a Kayak Cart

  • Ever use a kayak cart to get to a place that is not accessible? I tested a couple different styles on different style boats and was rather shocked how well they preformed. I learned it's important to match up the cart to a kayak that it fits. Not only that, but the rest of the day worked out great too. Gotta love it when life's plans come together.

    Marty, I’ve been kayak fishing in TB for almost 10 years now and it’s almost entirely because of your channel. I’ve added anchor trollies, rod holders and yes, retractable wheels to go from truck to water across to ground. Love the channel. Keep up with what made you great in the first place! 👍

    Really cool video Marty..Thanks for taking us along! I’m modifying my kayak with a rudder now, using a plastic cutting board for a mount plate and need to run some internal cables. Every step I really am thinking..how would Marty do this 😄..so just know you’ve been an inspiration to my Very Many kayak additions! I think you’d like it, and be proud. Appreciate all you’ve shared and done! Have a great weekend Amigo! 👍👍🎣🛶 👌✌️

    Between 2009-2014 I have spent many a miles carting around my old kayak. You can not go wrong with having wheels. When I got my hobie I used boonedox landing gear and also trailer for all other times to back into water via ramp. You make do with what you have but you make do more if you have more. I still remember walking like half of mile in cocroach bay because everyone was out on the water and I was not going to leave my kayak and then walk half a mile to find it stolen. I have since adopted using anchor grips so I tie to a mangrove just far enough from shore to make it more inconvenient for someone to go and take it while I am parking the truck.
    Downside to having wheels is that they are designed to travel light. If you have a fully loaded kayak... that is when it becomes a huge pain. I remember when I went to Myakka State Park to unsuccessfully go to the deep hole to see those alleged 300 alligators (did not see), I had to launch at kayak spot with this gnarly step and over rocks and all that. I almost threw out my back trying to lift my kayak.
    After the accident I can't lift my hobie so it is a trailer queen but I still have boondedox wheels for it just in case. Never know when you need to walk it from yay to yay.
    I need to get me 2 carts for my smaller kayaks for when family comes over. Not a fan of carrying them at all.
    On my old perception sport I would mount cart on front of my kayak with wheels over water so that when I pulled back to shore, I would not have to flip the kayak, get the wheels, stand in water kicking alligators and snapping turtles. Very much prefer to be out of the water.
    I heard some people actually kayak with cart still attached to the kayak so that when they come back ashore they just wheel kayaks out.
    I tested that theory once and it was not actually all that bad... except for cart rusting and all that.

    I don’t have a pelican but would love to have one. I would like the catch 110. They are quality and should stand the test of time. The carts definitely looks like it makes it easier.

    Cool, I’ve got a 12 ft Pelican and have struggled with a diy cart. Being inspired by your videos I put an old salvaged trolling motor on my Angler and rigged up a stick control, motor is on the tail end where I have also improvised a cart bracket with wheels off a discarded large garbage can, had to register the kayak due to being motorized so I also installed navigation lights and use a casting type depth/fish finder. Also added a crate for gear, rod holders of course and have the battery for the motor up front in the storage compartment which seems a good place to balance out the load but I tell you I am not pleased with the extra weight of a dang battery. Thinking of pulling all that crap back off and use my paddle!

    It is so much easier to just grab up one of those Pelican carts, unless you really have time to test and build a dyi version its the best way to know youre going to have an easy time covering ground to reach the launch

  • @pamcooper4081
    @pamcooper4081 Před rokem

    I have not had good experiences with rigid type kayak carts, and I've tried a lot of them. The issue is that on uneven terrain, the wheels have no compensatory movement and the kayak can tip over. Also, the straps can slip on the smooth surface of the kayak as you move forward, again causing tip or just having the kayak work it's way out of the carrier straps. I have opted for a DIY cart with a flexible washing machine type hose that slips over the top of the kayak and is connected to the axle with the axle low to the ground. the Cart is then attached by a slim piece of rope to a rivet in the top of the kayak. When the kayak is moved forward, the wheels adjust to the terrain. The kayak can't slip off because the rope holds the cart in position, plus the yak is trapped between the two ends of the hose attached to the axle. Pelican seems to tried to compensate for the issue of uneven terrain by having its cart able to be secured in the well on the bottom of the kayak. But that cart won't work on non-Pelican yaks if they wont fit into the bottom like the one in your vid.

    Just a comment for anyone using this kayak cart, it's amazing but has a flaw where it has no brace in the middle as it shifts side to side it will break the plastic clamps. I used 2x 3/4" PVC T fittings and a pipe between them and it's works great.
