The characters played off each other - that's what made the whole context funny. The funniest stand-alone character was Sophia.

Yeah a lot of Rose's comedy doesn't stand alone as well as the others without context. That and whoever edited the compilation didn't really pick her best stuff.

Her character can be goofy, but funny! When she talked about her town ..seems to me everyone that lived there was as goofy as she was! That was the appeal all of the Golden Girls were unique and individual people
My Aunt was in her late 80's and her friend was in HER late 90's when I drove them from Michigan to Florida to their rental condo near Pensacola. They were a LOT like the Golden Girls and I had the most fun traveling with them because it was just us three girls, no husbands, kids, etc. (Their husbands had passed and mine just stayed home out of self-preservation). They took me out to the Flora-Bama Lounge whose roof is made from a parachute. It used to be a regular roof but it blows off every hurricane season so they just started replacing it with a parachute instead. Have you been there Ty? They had some sort of Fish-Fling they called a "mullet toss" across a river between Florida and Alabama too. :D

Rose is from a place in Minnesota called St. Olaf where everyone is a bit crazy and stupid. She was brought up on a dairy farm. Her ancestors are from Scandinavia, that's where all the mad words come from, sometimes you have to watch full episodes to understand what the hell she is talking about. I'm a connoisseur on the Golden Girls, watched them dozens of times and still find them hilarious.
The beauty of Rose is actually others reacting to her. On her own, her character is silly. It's the reactions from others that make the moments funny. She doesn't work out of context.
I'm glad that many brought this out. I LOVE each of the Golden Girls, but the success of the show is really due to their chemistry together. These four ladies are people with very different personalities and backgrounds but become lightning in a bottle when they merge. Alone, the magic isn't the same. That's why the sequel series, The Golden Palace, wasn't as successful because Dorothy wasn't in the picture anymore.
Rose's stories lose something without seeing the others comments before and after what she said. You definitely need to view the show! I was growing up while it was on the air and my mom and I would watch it together. Love Golden Girls.
If you watch more than just the clip it will make more sense. Betty White has often said that Rose is not dumb, she’s terminally naive.
Her comedy is very nuanced and not good without context. In context she is hilarious. While her character is a bit naive and ditzy she shows great insight and wisdom at times. Made even funnier or profound because it is so unexpected.
The cutting of these clips wasn't very good at all. Even I was a tad bored and I LOVE Rose! Thanks for the reaction, looking forward to your next one of Rose!

I hear ya. With Rose, you have to have context with most of her scenes. Also, this one omitted the few one liners she had. What makes her funny is the reactions of Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia to her naivety and her meandering stories of her home town St. Olaf.
She is meant to be listened to in the context of the entire show. Unlike the others, you can't really isolate her lines and fully appreciate what she brings to the show. When you start watching the entire episodes you will see what I mean.
My favorite scenes in Golden Girls were Rose's St. Olaf stories and the cast reactions to those tales. This video clip of (let's say) punch lines just doesn't work. What you don't get from these clips is the growth of the bonding between these women which made Rose safe to really let her inner goofy freak flag fly high! I think it takes the full episode to really appreciate Betty White in these scenes.
Betty White is a national treasure. but yes, you have to understand the context and the reactions to really appreciate Rose humor. :D
There is so much missing from the clips shown. Either the lines before hers or what was said after hers that explain a situation more. She wasn't fully a dunce, just in a different chapter...or sometimes a totally different library altogether. I was laughing at them because I...um...can more or less recite every episode (not that I've seen each one about 20 to 35 times)
Ty, please, you absolutely MUST just watch the series. A lot of their jokes are even funnier if you watch the episodes. Trust me. I've been watching Golden Girls since I was a little stinker. 🥰
Interesting. Rose is my fave but her scenes all here didnt play well unless u see the set-up’s & banter to work with her. She is a ditzy woman with the heart & often mind of a 6 yr old. Actually, there’s an episode where she wrote a letter to Gorbachev (the former Russian Prime Minister) to ask for peace & no nuclear weapons, before Russia separated like it is now, & it was how she got press coverage & they press assumed she was a 7 or 8 yr old girl .. from her naivety to coming from a half ass backwards hometown to showing a not often seen fiercely competitive side she was always a riot. I wish this compilation had been better...

My mind went to my nephews and how their parents thought it was okay to let them have full blown tantrems, but only at home (to keep it out of the public eye). Guess they didn’t think far enough ahead to realize if that was okay at home, kids would get the habit and think it okay in public 🤦🏻♀️🙃. -- Rose’s character was a master at sincerely stating the ridiculous 😊
She really plays off the other characters, as some have said. There wasn't a set up in these Rose clips most of the time, so a lot of the context was missing.
Ok..... I was watching this show in my twenties and to me Rose ( Betty White ) was given the tougher scripts to read …..she usually was going on an on about the town she grew up in which has an odd sound to it . I guess the writers added her character to be the odd one …..Blanch was the promiscuous one , Dorthy was the divorced one , Sophie was the Mom but in reality she was the youngest cast member so even though they all had incredible comedic talents the show wanted to add an odd ball . The show is much better when not just one is the focus …..at least for me it is . In this skit of Rose it did not make her out to be as great as her character was during a whole show .

I understand why it was hard to relate and connect to Rose in this forum.
You have to have a history or something to compare to, to be able to connect the dots and see the context.
Rose character is a naive one but this clip went to fast from clip to clip for you to actually enjoy it,whoever did Rose character have the scene run a lil longer to get the jokes. Shes like the punch lines of some the jokes.

Betty white was born to play this role, rose was not so much a dummy has much as she was extremely literal she took anything that was said to her for that exact meaning , she was extremely upbeat and positive and simple

Seriously hard to laugh at some stuff if you don't know the background on these characters. Sophia grew up poor in Sicily, Rose was of Norwegian from St Olaf (which is full of idiots), Blanche was brought up a southern deb and Dorothy was recently divorced (from an idiot that married a younger woman) and a school teacher. All these backgrounds makes the scenes funny but you really need to watch whole episodes
You have to watch the entire episodes to appreciate Rose. It is her character that makes Rose hilarious, not her one liners --- those are saved for Dorothy and Sophia. Trust me --- Rose Nyland is really fun to watch.
Roses best moments were not her own but in the way she reacted to what the others were doing and saying

Rose is the set up for a lot of jokes, it’s how they play off each other. So it does Rose injustice to cut out the lead up or after the stories. So you just would get part of a set up and that’s it. Sophia is my favorite followed by Dorothy.
GG was one of my all-time fave comedies and it definitely had one of the best casted ensembles in tv history. Sadly, much of the content on some of these vids don't show the SET-UP of some of their best jokes, which was the problem on this 'Rose' funny clips--many of the jokes didn't land and that was the main reason; if you don't understand the context, the jokes make no sense. Sad, because, being such a fan myself, I recalled many of the circumstances behind the jokes and prepared to laugh along with you, but couldn't really because I understood what was going on and that mostly you didn't understand and that's not your fault. My personal fave is Dorothy because I share her sarcasm, but all three of the women are absolutely hysterical! Do yourself a favor buddy and get yourself to see all those seasons as I've heard you say you might do. You will not be sorry. Peace, all!
Hi Ty, the reason this wasn't that funny to you was this - the Golden Girls were funny as a unit. Clips just don't give you their bouncing these zingers off each other. There are many entire episodes now on CZcams which give a much better picture of how funny they all were TOGETHER. They were 4 different personalities with quirks, and together they made synergistic magic! Rose was not stupid, she was childlike, but surprisingly good at zingers herself. And Betty White is a very good comedian and actress herself, still out there. You might want to check out Betty introducing Morgan Freeman, in the audience, when he received the Lifetime Achievement Award . I think she ad libbed it, Morgan Freeman loved it - most of us loved it, and I think you will too. Sorry this is so long. Have a beautiful Christmas!

As a Danish person, every time she talks her gibberish (surprise, those are not real words XD) I always wonder if that is really what we sound like to non-nativ speakers. (though I can almost guarantee that you can tell the difference between the languages)
But why does she keep mentioning Scandinavian as a language and Scandinavian sayings? I am sure Scandinavians have many similarities, culturally and language wise, but does a Danish person really understand a Swedish person without problems?
@@icetruck3420 Not entirely without difficulty and Danish is notoriously hard to understand as that is the one of the three languages that has veered the most away from the original old norse in terms of pronunciation but generally yes, we can understand each other. I speak Danish to my Swedish relatives and they speak Swedish to me.
That Being said they ARE individual languages and while we are very aware of our shared history we are either Swedish, Danish or Norwegian first and far most.
Yeah if you aren't familiar with the character this video wasn't the best to display Rose. But the mackerel in the purse quote is one of my favorite Rose moments from the whole show haha

The first clip her husband was a insurance sales man I think so he was always trying to sell anyone anything. She's the weirdest character because she's from st olaf minisoda with her weird talking and stories

Rose (Betty White) is a sweet character on the show, but her funny moments plays off the reactions of others, because the characters play off each other so well. Stand alone, she comes off as odd. The best stand alone characters I think are Dorothy, Sophia, Blanche, and then Rose

Also, the compilation needed the earlier portions to make the scene make sense of what Rose said.
Maybe "air head" is the better term for Rose. The reason this video wasn't very funny is that it needs to set up. Her character doesn't work, otherwise.

Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. The lack of a set-up was the downfall with these clips. Betty White has said that Rose wasn't supposed to be dumb so much as naive. When she was considering taking on the role, she was told that Rose takes everything literally. There have also been times where Rose surprised everybody by taking charge of a situation in a very no-nonsense manner, usually when she saw injustice in the world. But again, you need context and set-up for all of this, and as you said, these clips were lacking that.
Dorothy was always the funniest to me. Lets see some Dorothy!! she was shady as heck

You haven't watched these shows in their entirety so you aren't catching the whole joke. The character of Rose is a really dingy person and I mean VERY dingy. She is very funny though when you watch the whole show.
Yeah these clips were done in a rather unfunny way. Rose could also be very funny at times right along with the other women on the show.
So many people loved Rose. I don't understand it. Surely, they could have written for a character that wasn't so stupid and naive.
It looks like it was more a character study than a funniest moments. Dorothy is my favorite Golden Girl though, so I may be a bit biased.
Gonna say that, with Rose's character, she's more funny with more background context. Like, with full episodes. In fact many of these "funny moments" generally are better with full episodes.
