Doc shows how to make new wood look old and weathered. This is not a coloring or staining process but a chemical reaction that ages the wood and turns it gray.
Using Minwax Effects is a bit tricky. Remember that each type of wood will react differently. Rough cut vs. smooth cut lumber also impacts the results.

You can also take a small propane burner and burn some color into them.

All the old painters I knew in the 50s and 60s mixed their own paint and stain colors. And it was as you describe - more artistic. In those days we often sprayed a bleach solution on the cedar to accelerate the aging look. I wondered if you had tried adding some of the charcoal color to the other lighter gray to see if you could use one process instead of two? Of course this would eliminate your ability to vary the colors. Great video!

Out of curiosity, instead of applying the 2 pigments separately, did you try mixing the 2 and applying as one coat??

I just used some of this on a project for my wife. The charcoal looked awesome as soon as it was applied but turned completely black by the time I came back to check on it. We wanted it to be dark, so it was fine.
