Ponce de León, who had been the first governor of Puerto Rico, through the stories of the natives of Hispaniola, Cuba and Puerto Rico, knew of the existence of extraordinary wealth beyond the territories to the northwest of the Island of Cuba. That is why he had requested and obtained royal permission to explore, obtain wealth and reclaim those lands that, to date, no other conqueror had even dared to enter. So said the official story; but according to some gossip, what he was really looking for was to find the sources from which the natives claimed that eternal youth sprouted.
That exploration trip lasted seven months and led to the discovery of new territories: on April 8, 1513, he was the first European to solemnly take possession, in the name of the King of Spain, of the land where he landed and which he called La Florida.
That trip also meant the use and description in his expedition by the sailor Antón de Alaminos, of the transcendental current of the gulf. This current would be used in the voyages of the Fleet of the Indies, since it allowed the navigation time between America and Europe to be greatly reduced, becoming a closely guarded secret on navigation charts until the second half of the 17th century.
The newly discovered land, La Florida, was a vast plain full of swamps, marshes and swamps that intertwined in an environment of exuberant vegetation of palm trees, pines, oaks and all sorts of tropical plants, with rivers that were not navigable by ships, with vast sandbanks and currents on the coast that complicated navigation, with hardly any natural shelter to protect boats larger than a canoe, hit by hurricanes, tornadoes and tropical storms of all kinds. Packed with life-threatening creatures for newcomers, from mighty black bears and pumas, to tiny venomous spiders and scorpions, deadly-stinging snakes, alligators and crocodiles. However, the most dangerous were the humans who lived there, among them the Calusa, some warlike natives, with a complex society that dominated other native peoples of the peninsula and who were not afraid of Europeans or the weapons of the explorers.
definitive establishment in those lands was a really complicated undertaking. Ponce de León himself, on his first exploration trip, lost one of the three ships and was never heard from again. On his next trip to Florida, he was killed at age 43 by a poisoned arrow.
Of all the territories of the current USA in which Spain was present for more than three hundred years, Florida took the cake in terms of difficulties.
