- In this video I will break down how the story and the steps I followed to become fluent in Spanish.
Here's what I would do if I had to start over and learn Spanish from scratch - speakspanishfaster.com/youtube
Gracias por ver mis videos!! These are the 3 Biggest things I would do if I had to learn Spanish all over - speakspanishfaster.com/youtube
me alegra encontrar esta página, así aprendemos unos de los otros.
"You don't even speak Spanish correctly, you don't sound like my grandma." 🤣🤣
Right😂😂
My daughter is half Puerto Rican, I want to speak so she can have her culture, her grandparents live 2hrs away.
Do it! She will appreciate it in the years to come!
Trust me she will
i wish my mama taught me
I wish someone taught me I had to learn on my own by listening to Latin rap and watching CZcams on Spanish instead of English, which definitely made me even more familiar with words not to mention I grew up around Spanish speakers so gives me even a more reason to learn. I’m still learning certain things and definitely not the best😂🤦🏾♂️ I can understand somebody but it’s hard for me to communicate back🤷🏾♂️
Puerto Rican is a nationality. It means you were born in Puerto Rico. It doesn't make sense to say she's "half Puerto Rican."
Omg i definitely feel you on the part where you basically “weren’t Rican because you couldn’t speak spanish” I’m learning spanish now but people don’t realize the dang identity issues that comes with people shaming you because you can’t speak Spanish + the colorist ones at that! I have kinky hair light/brown skin.. physically i just look black and i got so sick and tired of people making me try to speak Spanish to prove that i was rican and ugh! Till this day i still Cannot get over my middle school pears doing that to me. That shit was so hurtful😭
It's okay because now you are stronger because of it!
@@SpeakSpanishFaster Aah of course! Thank you so much and i appreciate your videos ☺️!!
Man, i felt this one. I'm light skinned and got called 'casper' growing up and got picked on all the time for not speaking Spanish.
I deal with this as well
The teacher that didn’t wanna move you up a Spanish class should watch this video because you’re literally one of the best Spanish teachers on CZcams.
I admire your story so much. For years I never thought I could learn spanish. At age 35 I started. Two years I am almost fluid. Serving as a missionary in Colombia gave me the motivation to learn to it. You know your bilingual when you hear two people speaking, one is translating but in your mind you say Why are they saying the same thing twice lol! Rocky's speak spanish faster program really gave me a foundation to get started. I was able to build from that. TAKE THE CHALLENGE LEARN A NEW LANGUAGE!!!
This is why I’m learning. Because I want to go on missions trips.
There’s a huge difference between learning Spanish as an academic exercise and learning Spanish as a tool to communicate and form relationships with people. If you just want to learn how Spanish works, then yeah… grammar books are great.
I’m trying to learn Spanish so I can communicate with Latinos here in my community on their level. If I can do that, then I feel like I’ve accomplished something meaningful. I suck at it right now but it’s just part of the process. Nothing good ever comes without the struggle….
What matters is that you have your “why” for learning Spanish. Without the “why” you’ll learn nothing ❤️❤️
A year later….hows it going?
@@LuqmanWright honestly, still struggling, lol!!
@@southernpaths2986mmm 🤔 what are you doing to learn?
@@newrandomvideos3623 mainly just speaking with native hispanohablantes where I work. I don’t really study books or videos anymore. At some point learning Spanish has to stop being academic and has to be something you actually use in the real world. It’s a slow, mistake filled road but I’m getting there.
It’s crazy how much I can relate to your story, I’m at that point of discovering my Puerto Rican side and I experience most everything you’ve said! It makes me feel so much better about my situation because of that
I'm glad you feel better Chris! Always remain positive and confident, even with your Spanish, even in the times where you normally would feel least confident. That's how you breakthrough!
I’ve been watching so many Spanish learning videos, all my ads are in Spanish 😂 😂. Anyways thx so much bro, love ur videos, so relatable
I'm glad you enjoyed it Justin, I appreciate you! Keep learning! It's a never-ending journey.
TL;DW (Too Long Didn’t Watch)
has spanish family but didn’t take seriously until older. started hanging out with spanish friends and went to puerto rico and that motivated him even more.
Tips and Tricks to learn spanish.
1)- listened to music, printed out lyrics
2)- Immersion
3)- asking many questions
4)- comprehensible input
5)- practice
6)- continue learning
Thank you!!
Muchas Gracias Trent!
no problem. trying to make everyone’s year a little bit more productive with short summaries.
I'm learning from Duolingo and need more practice material
My 7 year old grandson is Puerto Rican and black. I'm trying to encourage him how important it is for him to learn about his Spanish heritage. He is very intelligent for his age.
im so happy you made this video. im a mexican american that did not grow up speaking spanish and now living in spain XD so i get the struggle !!!!!! and the regret lmao but im learning spanish now and everyday is a opportunity to improve
Hey Hattie! Muchas gracias por ver, I"m happy it could help and inspire you. Always here for you!
My entire family is puerto rican but i grew up in the states. Your story and struggle with identity/language is so relatable to me and after i graduate college im going to live in Puerto Rico for the first time with my parents! Looking forward to learning and fully immersing myself into the language and culture. As a kid it was hard to be told im not a “real” puerto rican by my friends from la isla but now i’m determined to learn and maybe even work as an engineer on the island. I love your videos! Please never stop making them haha 🇵🇷
This is a truly heart warming story. You turned your struggle into a personal goal and now you TEACH Spanish to thousands of people around the world. Your lessons are some of the best on CZcams and I 100% appreciate your philosophy on conjugating in all tenses. I'm still working on that rolling Rrrrrr though .... 🙈
I wish I had your experience. My dad was PR and my mom was Mexican. My entire life I’ve been around Spanish in California- I learned nothing. I tried several times, took it in HS, got a c. The world translated for me, there was no pressure. No one made fun of me or maybe I didn’t know but I resemble the late Selena, so most people think I speak Spanish. Even my BFF is bilingual, we went Banda dancing on the regular. Now I’m in my 40’s, I have 3 kids, all with Latin names. My husband and I went to visit Mexico recently to see his family. He also doesn’t speak Spanish. We returned and I’ve been on a mission to learn. For the first time ever my mind has opened up to the language. I’m learning more than ever. I listen to you, listen to podcasts, read children’s books, do Duolingo, I have Lingopie, Quizlet and I write in a daily journal in Spanish. I’m determined to learn more and stop looking like the brownest gringa. We go back in December.I admire what you have done, it took humility to take it in.🙌🏽
I love this! I’m Afro chicana (black and Mexican) and although I grew up with my Mexican side, I never learned because we weren’t a Spanish speaking household. I’m learning at 37. ❤
Big up yourself bro. I’m Jamerican( Jamaican and American) but I get told I look Dominican a lot. You’re helping me bro
🇯🇲🇺🇸
Thanks for sharing your story! I relate to it. I'm half Puerto Rican (my mom's side) and African, and for the first 4-5 years of my life, I learned everything in spanish and english (and a little of my dad's native language). At age 5, my pediatrician told my mom that being multi-lingual would DELAY my development so it was only English from there. Now as an adult, I'm trying to pick up where I left off almost 30 years ago...
So relatable! My school told my parents to stop teaching me 🙄
Your story really resonates with me, as it is similar to mine. My father is Dominican and my mother is white. They separated when I was a baby and my (non-spanish-speaking) mother raised me in California. I was only around my Dominican family a few times a year and picked up a little Spanish. Fast forward to high school...I also learned basically nothing in Spanish 1 and 2, LOL. Anyway, I visited my dad in DR for the 1st time last year and I felt SO embarrassed about not speaking Spanish. It was a terrible feeling....I've been studying ever since using CZcams and podcasts. I take ALL of your advice. I've been able to comprehend way more, however I'm still very shy to speak. Sometimes I know what to say but the words just don't come out, lol. So I'm still working on actually speaking. I only have until May because I'm going back to DR. Thanks for sharing you story!
Ahh that sucks. I’m sure you’ll get there with enough drive and motivation and it helps to be around the locals as well. I don’t speak Spanish my self but I do understand basic convos. I’m in Colombia right now cause my dad needs to do surgery and everyone here speaks Spanish with very little English so I’m in survival mode right. Learning as i go. Good luck!
you got this, tackle these things day by day, always remember that we all started somewhere, even with learning our mother language, it was taught to us and with daily exposure we get better, best of luck
Love your story!! My son is half Dominican and I very much want him to be fluent in Spanish since half of his family still lives in the DR and don’t speak any English. This year I’ve made it a goal for me to become fluent and to start teaching him Spanish. Luckily his father is around to help us both.
So glad I found this channel. I took Spanish from 8th grade through college and ended up with a degree in Spanish. However, I feel as if the emphasis was on reading and writing moreso than speaking. I still deal with confidence issues when speaking because I literally have to create the opportunities to practice. I read aloud and tutor students to keep from losing what I know. So now I'm working on fluency in speaking. Thankful that your content has inspired me. Keep going!
This is great motivation. My grandfather is Puerto Rican, but I grew up in an African American household and part of my early childhood (4-10)I lived in España. Though I’m familiar with the language I can’t really speak it. So I’ve been learning Dominican Spanish because most of the Puerto Ricans here don’t speak Spanish. But I’m definitely trying to more in touch with my Latino side and España because my childhood.
Kinda similar to me, both my parents are African American,my dad’s dad was born in GA but was raised in Cuba(5 to 15), he ain’t teach my dad and uncles Spanish but I heard my granddaddy speak it to conduct business. I took Spanish in high school & college but still can’t speak. Now at 29 I’m tryna learn it to hopefully become fluent
@@kingofmedia30 Definitely similar and kind of cool. We’ll get through bro, every time I think I’m not really progressing, I end up having a break through so don’t give it.
@@HUSTLINKASH fasho bro, I’m finna buy Speak Spanish Faster and I’m committing to learning the language, my granddaddy would be proud that one of his grandsons learned the language he loved. If I can get conversational, I wanna travel to Cuba and finally see the island he called home
Yes very similar story! It seems to always pan out like this but the beauty is all we have to do is put in the work and we will improve!
Rocky,
I want to personally thank you for giving me the tools I need to believe in myself when it comes to Spanish. My story is exactly like yours and it inspires me to finally learn and be proud of who I truly am. I finished the seven day course and I watch all your videos. I have a long why to go but I will be fluent one day. Thank you once again for helping me learn Spanish which I thought I’d never be able to do.
Hey Jason, I'm glad that I can help you in anyway mi hermano! All you have to do is stay consistent and you will achieve your goals. You got this bro!
Gracias mi hermano!
We have a lot in common bro. My dad is puerto rican and my mom is African American. They split up when I was basically a baby. I went to the PR parade in NY a few years ago but I'm going to PR this summer. I live in Orlando and people always speak Spanish to me.. I'm tired of saying "hablo poquito" lol, I understand a lot of Spanish but I still have a long way to go.
❤ 🇵🇷 this is such an amazing video on the hard work that comes from being brought up speaking English and the journey and heart it takes to learn Spanish at any cost. Great video Rocky! Hoping to be fluent in Puerto Rican Spanish one day to speak to family in Caguas.
Thanks for sharing your experience, b/c now, I feel like I can master Spanish🙏🏿😊
Yes Charlet, you can. You have everything you need to make it happen, now just go make it happen!
Ha! Loved the phrase, "...you don't sound like my grandma." When you spoke about your middle school teacher - I can relate. Hilarious. Thanks for the content. I'm currently in college in Spanish 1101. Learning as quick as I can.
Your story resonates with me on so many levels. I always felt like I wasn’t Black enough or Panamanian enough. As I got older it forced me to hide that half of myself because I got tired of explaining. It took for me to go to Puerto Rico and be forced to speak Spanish ( barely) and watch the pride that everyone carried with who they are. I admired that and now i am motived to not give up on myself or that side of me anymore!
I am really feeling this. My father is African American and my mother is Puerto Rican. I grew up in the Bronx, NYC and we spoke English in my home. I took Spanish in middle school and college but I’m still not fluent. I’m 45. I look Puerto Rican so Spanish people expect me to talk in Spanish but I can’t. 😢 I freeze too lol. When I went to PR my cousin laughed and called me a clown cuz I couldn’t speak Spanish. I subscribed to this channel so hope this helps. I don’t want conjugations lol. I need help speaking and listening and comprehending. I wouldn’t mind writing well in Spanish. I want to slowly immerse myself. I grew up watching Univision. I dance salsa. Love Spanish music. I need a safe place to speak tho. I don’t want people being mad because I sound gringo 😢
Your story helped me a lot. Thank you for sharing! it is very relatable. My grandmother was born and raised in Mexico City. My mom was born and raised in the States. They both speak Spanish fluently. However, I was not raised speaking Spanish. I am working now to become fluent :) I am listening to a lot reggaetón and watching TV in Spanish.
I enjoyed listening to your journey! I’m 57 and grew up with my PR grandparents speaking Spanish at home. I moved to the Midwest 20 years ago and I feel that I’ve lost some of my Spanish so I want to get back to getting fluent and comfortable with speaking. TFS! 🤗
I feel you. I’m Venezuelan but I got all my moms color (white) and paired with the fact all my spanish family just spoke english around me I didn’t learn growing up, people would ask what ethnicity I am and they would laugh when I said Venezuelan, so eventually I would just say white. I was ashamed because I didn’t know a language I wasn’t taught. I’m learning because I want to talk to my family and travel, and feel more confident about where I’m from
i’m also half puerto rican! my mom is from jamaica ny and my dad is from pr. i hope to learn spanish to speak with the rest of my family! i was born and raised in fl :)
I am Egyptian so Arabic is my native language.
I started learning English at school from a very young age but as you mentioned I have no speaking skills.
At the age of 14 too I started watching movies with subs but I did not understand all of them. It took me a while to realize that the movie has to be close to my level in English.
And vecause there is no one to talk to, even though that was about 9 years ago and we have internet, I statrted talking to myself and shadowing.
Then I majored in English which improved my academic writing skills only. I graduated in 2023.
Love the story . I hired for my daughter a Peruvian Lady when she was 3 months old to live and care for her when I was working, She is part of our family and we are part of hers. Now my daughter is fully fluent.I am trying to catch up now. The best part about it is that people always ask us if we are PR or Dominican .when I say no they ask about my grand parents lol.She now lives in Miami and says she is glad she can speak well. I am working hard to learn . I study daily around1- 2 on a good day 1 hour regularly .I will check out out your program. I need more speaking practice but I am very shy and I do listen well. Wish me luck.
¡Que historia inspiradora, mil gracias por compartir! 👏
Thanks for the video it’s crazy being 50/50 we all go through basically the same exact things with people saying the same things to all of us happy we all can connect to our culture
i love your story, thanks for sharing. you're a good storyteller too. More story times porfa ❤❤❤❤
Thanks amigo! Maybe one day I will start a podcast or something who knows. But I truly appreciate your support!
Of course and we appreciate your content and you being down to earth. Keep going you're doing great things 👍🏽 🧡💛
The first question asked is always can you speak Spanish. Once I say no its almost like the air goes out of a balloon because you can see how you are instantly dismissed as not Puerto Rican in the person's mind because it shows on their face.
I relate to this and seeing that you got it done is seriously inspiring. I'm Mexican American and my childhood situation is very similar to yours. In HS I didn't care too much but it was always embarrassing but as I grew older it got worse since I was no longer a little kid I was a grown man that looks real Mexican. Now as a 22 year old Ive never been more motivated to learn Spanish and get in touch with my heritage but I need to get serious.
How’s it going for you now?
Real talk! Similar study for me but fam is DR. I gave up when my cousins made fun of me. Now my kids are asking me to teach them with the little bit that I remember. You and your channel are a blessing and a great help for me to learn and now teach. Gracias por todo!
My 17yr old son is now asking to be taught. After all his life he refused to speak it and did not want us to speak to him in Spanish. I wish I pushed it but it's never too late.
Thank you for sharing! I grew up in a predominantly white community in Arizona with my grandparents from my mom’s side of the family (Irish/Norwegian-American). My dad unfortunately was deported when I was young and I lost communication to my father’s side of the family from Zacatecas/Tijuana. I have since re-connected with my Mexican family after my sister found me on Facebook of all places and have since started to really connect with my Mexican heritage. I can relate to the teasing and confusion people have “you’re Mexican and don’t speak Spanish, what’s wrong with you?!” Lol and it has certainly motivated me to want to learn but also I want to speak with my family, especially the ones that don’t speak English or speak very little English and that’s most of them. Your channel has been helpful thank you for doing what you do! ¡Viva Mexico!
Yo crecí en Europa oriental y cuando me mudé a EU me identifiqué más con la cultura latina y terminé aprendiendo español. Todavía tengo dificultades con el español caribeño por eso llegué a este canal para practicar más. Saludos!
Lol that’s funny you don’t sound like my grand ma something a kid would say things we say when we really don’t know any better so hilarious love it
Yes, Spain is where it all started & it is soooo different.
Love the honesty and sincerity man, good job keeping it real. Awesome channel man.
Very grateful for your videos man!
buen video, quiero hablar espanol con fluidez. aprendi espanol en escuela y cuandro trabajo en the navy. i had friends that were dominicans, puertoricans, mexicans. i some of them said that they were only going to speak to me in spanish. especially when they found out that i wasnt latino. im African American and White. but i looked like i was puertorican many said. but when i got out the navy and moved back home no one spoke spanish. occasionally i would speak what i new and still do but this last week i been getting more serious. un dia es mi meta, voy a hablar espanol con fluidez
Puerto Ricans are a beautiful people, period. So glad I found your channel, I'm learning Spanish again and am learning Puerto Rican Spanish bc let's not play - the accent is beautiful, just like its people.
This is very motivating.
Thanks a lot
Great story
I am of Greek dissent I did not speak English when I was little long story short junior high school 141 I picked Spanish seven 8/ ninth grade teachers were from Spain, so I learned some grammar but here I am decades later, because I’m old my girlfriends from Venezuela and I’m really learning Spanish because we go to church todos en Espanol
Very inspirational! You are an excellent speaker. Thank you for sharing that beautiful story.
I resonate with your story so much. I had a similar experience. My mom is black American and dad is Afro-colombiano. My parents weren’t together, and I grew up closer to my mom’s side. In 2009 I went to Cali, Colombia for the first time and felt the frustration of language barrier, while trying to connect with my family. My Spanish was so basic from school. I was so tired of expressing gratitude with “gracias” especially in a Latin culture that values respect in the language. For example when we greet elders, we say “hola abuela, nombre de Dios, cómo está usted?” So many formalities and code switching between cousins and uncles in language expression. All to say, I was motivated when I came back to the states and it is still an ongoing journey of learning Spanish . Thanks for sharing.
Glad I found this channel, I relate to this so much
thank you for sharing your story!!!
You are very inspiring! Gracias!
Great video!
Very inspiring! It was fun to listen to and it makes me feel very motivated to keep going with the journey, thank you!!
Love your videos dude
I know you might not see this since this is a month old video, but I am really grateful to have found you. My friend is from the Dominican Republic and speaks both Spanish and English pretty well, but when she and another one of our friends are in a call at the same time (we all play games together) they often speak Spanish that I don't understand. Up until now I haven't really had a real interest in speaking Spanish, but I came across a few of your videos, and something in me sparked, and now I really want to connect with her on a lingual and cultural level, because she and our other friend are really interesting people that I want to get to know better. Seeing these videos and hearing just how quickly I can get at least some basics down with a good amount of work put in really inspires me, and I just wanted to thank you. I'm one of those people with 5+ hours a day to spend just listening, and once I'm a little comfortable I'm going to tell them about my goal to learn it and have them help me continue, so I guess Ill be seeing a lot more of you in the future. :)
This was helpful to hear and learn about best practices to stay consistent. Thank you.
You are a great teacher bro and inspirational.
Muchas gracias por tu video. I am learning Spanish and definitely agree with you on the importance of immersion and consuming comprehensible content. I hope to soon become fluent in your beautiful language.
So much of your story resonates with mine. Being that we moved from NY to Jersey when I was young I also kind of rejected learning Spanish as a kid. But also a big part of it was the fact that Puerto Rican people would always do the same thing you said, make fun of my attempts and shame me for not knowing. In listening to your story it has dawned on me how much that affected me. Now I’m older and most of my elders have passed on and I hardly have anyone left who speaks Puerto Rican Spanish to me. This has sparked my interest in learning even now that I’m in my forties. I think we should encourage our children to learn and make sure we stand against the shaming in order to keep our culture going. Even though I hardly understand it there’s nothing more comforting than to hear some speaking specifically Puerto Rican Spanish because it takes me right back to being a kid who was loved by my family.
i am not hispanic but i grew up with Brazillian Portuguese from my grandmother, and i really like spanish and i work at a "mexican" restaurant, but there are spanish speakers there. i really want to learn the language and im trying my best!
As a Puerto Rican born in the states, I relate to being excluded from the culture for not knowing Spanish, especially because I do not "look" Puerto Rican or remotely Hispanic and the only thing that stands out as Hispanic is my name.
Tus videos me ayudan mucho. Ya hablo español… pero Mi novio es puertorriqueño y quiero hablar mejor con él específicamente en español puertorriqueño y tus videos son MUY útiles 👏🏼😆muchas gracias!
This is encouraging ❤
This is a great video !!! I am been re-focused on speaking Spanish again and your videos, and been awesome. This one I can relate to because I grew up in New York.
because it’s very similar to what I went through as a growing up in a Puerto Rican family growing up with my grandparents.
Great video thank you for sharing
but everybody spoke English in our house
Great story! I’m inspired! Vamos!
Gracias :)
damn, this makes so much sense, thank you Rock!
I love your story!! It is So inspirational! Wow! you Speak Spanish So Good!! I couldn't tell that Spanish wasn't your first language. I'm trying to learn to speak Spanish fluently, it's a desire of mine. I'm a person of color and live on the east coast, I've been mistaken for being Dominican Alot! So I would love to speak Spanish so that i could blend in! 😂, but I really do love the language and Spanish cultures.❤
Mucha Gracias. This helps me so much. I am a Black American from NYC and I had a Domincan boss and a Puerto Rican Best Friend at two different work places within different time periods. I learned a lot from mi gente at work. Poco a poco. I want to get serious now and learn to speak and understand with high fluency.. I still have a way to go. I appreciate your story so much. . You are very encouraging and inspiring ❤
I really love your channel and I am only two videos in! Sharing your background is much appreciated. It makes me have hope that I can learn as an adult. I took Spanish in high school and did OK but i haven’t been able to grasp it. But i am taking it more seriously now and i am determined to be fluent!
For the longest time I was having a problem learning the pronouns for the 7 Compound Tenses, but finding out that the actual Verb for all 7 is the same? It makes it all much more manageable now. 😃
By the way, it's like you're becoming the Doctor Jordan Peterson of La Lengua!
Become that "Monster" of a Teacher!
Thanks for sharing your story. I can relate, growing up with Blacks they would say "Mexicans came over here we shouldn't have to learn Spanish, they need to learn English." I grew up thinking everyone that spoke Spanish was Mexican. It was also the only language offered aside from ASL when I was in elementary & middle school. My mom is 1/2 Puerto Rican but was adopted by a Black couple so it's all we knew. When I went to the Navy is when I was exposed to the vast Hispanic cultures. I was embarrassed how ignorant I was. By the time we located her biological family I was already in my mid-thirties. Now I'm about to be 43 starting fresh. Like you, school Spanish taught me nothing. Talking with my Mexican friends was helpful but when I went to college I thought switching to French was smart. NOPE! Lost the bit of Spanish I could speak & had to drop from French. But I will learn. This is encouraging
Keeping making goals. That is the reason I am on this journey now in my life at 46 years old and I want to incorporate the spanish language into my life. I really like the advice you give. Thank you for sharing your story.
Thanks so much.
Rocky! Your teaching method is really helping me a lot. But I still have a long way to go. I'm still trying to roll my rrrrrr's also. Thank you! 👍🏾👍🏾💖🙏🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Omg I’m so glad I found your channel yes I can relate that’s why now at 22 I want to become fluent . it really makes me feel out the loop because I’m half Puerto Rico is my mom but we’re from Philly she never got a chance to grow up with her dad in San Juan plus he was in marines but yeah I definitely appreciate u sharing that cuz a lot of people like me can relate ,also when I tell people I am Puerto Rican and can’t fluently speak Spanish I just know they be judging me lol but honestly it’s a thing of me just fully appreciating my roots I’m excited to become Fluent 💓💓💓💓 , 🙏🏽 ✨✨✨
I know this off topic but no cap you helped me with my form with basketball many years back with those form videos I knew you looked familiar 😭😭
I have been there too! I was born im Florida, my mom is from Nicaragua and my dad is from Honduras both fluent in spanish. When I was little Spanish was actually kind of my first language but my parents stopped teaching me because my school told them I would struggle with English plus the area we lived in didn’t have much spanish speakers, so sadly I lost it. Most of my youth I didn’t really care for learning Spanish but I still wanted to know what my relatives were saying. It wasn’t until high school when hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico and a huge amount of Puerto Ricans moved to my town; that’s when I really wanted to learn Spanish again. So I tried but it was a little hard because they speak faster and their dialect is different. After high school, I moved to Miami and that was a whole other ball game because it’s like another country and it’s Cuban Spanish. So at that point I really had no other choice but to learn ! I changed my phone settings to spanish, I listened to podcasts, music, movies to spanish and it worked! I was able to speak to customers at my work in spanish and it felt amazing. Yes I’ve made mistakes and went through some embarrassing moments but it’s worth trying. I still struggle with a stutter pero ahora puedo hablar mas fluidez!
Your story is similar to my own. Cheers man. your channel is awesome too.
Very interesting story
So true! I spent years in high school and college studying Spanish but never really got fluent or comfortable speaking it, even. Fast forward 15 years and randomly I start learning Arabic and get very comfortable speaking it in under 1.5 year. Actually, I traveled to the middle east and used it successfully in very basic situations at 9 months of studying. The way you study and the mindset you have can make such a difference in how quickly you pick up a language!
Thank you ❤
This is helpful to understand Spanish but how about speaking bc I’m 75% Puerto Rican and I wanna learn how to speak before I go on my trip also you have the best content
Thank you for sharing. Im trying to learn because so many people of spanish heritage are moving to our area. They are all so nice but some do struggle to communicate in english. Hoping to someday be able to communicate better! Thank you!
Love hearing this story. I have struggled with Spanish since I was 16. I lived near the border in San Diego for years and took countless trips to TJ and other places in Baja. I have explored much of Latin America and have mainly dated women from LA. There are few things I want more than to be able to speak well and more fully experience beautiful spanish speaking cultures around the world. I have lived in Spain for the past 10 months and I'm finally making a little progress, but I have found myself in those situations you described on the beach so many times.. "you have lived here for almost a year and you barely speak?" or I get that disgusted look sometimes... or people switch on me/ignore me when I struggle. Part of me wishes I had learned in Guatemala or Colombia, as it can be more difficult in Spain. But I have connected with many Latin people here and I'm finally able to communicate a little with Spaniards--and have a connection. So happy to have found your channel. And hope to explore Puerto Rico one day
I been studying Spanish everyday like 7 months and I can say a bunch of sentences my biggest issue is people speaking fast in glad I found ya channel cus you def help me
I don't know what portion i am but my grandfather is from loiza my dad is half ive been learning alot from this channel
I studied Spanish from 7th grade through college... I was pretty good. (I skipped a year in hs, too.)... but that was over 30 years ago. But I also played with it a bit over the years. I decided to pick it back up. Back to reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Never too late.
i have a similar mixing to you, my mom is puerto rican my dad is african american and he’s from new york too! I don’t have grandparents but your channel is awesome i love it
Cool!!! I love your videos, but I'm a native Spanish speaker and I follow you cuz I can understand your English, and cuz I love the way you try to help Spanish learners.
i loved this. it makes me feel less alone. if you can do it with one puerto rican parent i can do it with 2 cuban parents. thank you!!
Muchas Gracias currently I'm 23 year old and learning Spanish is it beneficial for me anyone please suggest
Such a similar experience. I would come home from learning in school and my parents would tell me that certain words, many at that time, weren't what they used. I gave up and have regretted ever since.
gracias para ti
I relate to your story so much! I’m half white and half Puerto Rican and I struggled learning Spanish in scool
Hahaha at least your teacher was from Spain! My poor students have a white Canadian French major as their Spanish teacher. Poor loves. I am grateful for my job but I do feel for my Dominican and Puerto Rican students. ❤️ There are so few Latino applicants for public education where I live. Thanks for this great channel. New sub.
