Hi Guys: just bought a new IC-7300. I'm an old school Collins guy and it was a BIG leap for me to jump into this. I am VERY happy with radio. And, thank you for the video; it helped me figure out how to use my new radio. 73 Mike N5RXP

Thank you for the fine video! I was an Extra Class about 20 years ago and had an Icom 756. I have recently gotten another Extra Class license and am going to get an Icom 7300! This looks like one fine little radio! Its hard to believe some people call this an entry level radio! Thank you Icom for making such a fine little radio!

Great video. Wooo...a long one. Was having my heart set on the Yaesu FT-991 and now I'm convinced. Looks like I'll be entering the ICOM HF World. I'm a veteran ham of VHF/UHF for over 30 years and satellite communications and finally got my General a year ago. Always had and used Yaesu HT's but now after seeing what this radio can do for me; being an entry level operator, this will be the avenue I'll be taking. Good job guys. Wish I was around for the live session of this presentation. 73's.

Thanks guys… Enjoyed the very thorough review… I just bought one of these at Hamvention this year (it was good to meet Ray for the first time in the booth!)… am very much enjoying the new rig - mostly on FT8. I had two Yaesu FT-991s I had been using for HF and for working full duplex on the satellites. I replaced them with the ICOM 7300 and the ICOM 9100 in Dayton and the ICOM 7300 is head and shoulders above the Yaesu FT-991. For the satellites, the ICOM 9100 is unsurpassed. However, for everything else, the Yaesu FT 991 was better. Your mileage may vary! 73 de Robert K3RRR

Been reviewing this radio for awhile. IMHO, one of the best radios in this price range to come out in awhile.
Only thing missing, which seems to be common in most radios, is power.
Would really like to see more power in Radios, but of coarse, that means more weight/heat

This is the most popular radio today. I don't have one, but I kno so many who do, techs, gens & extras - it's a radio for everybody! For around $1K, u get a full featured HF SDR transceiver! It's a lotta radio for the money. Seems that out of every group I hear on the air, I hear at least one 7300! I kno someone in Monterey who has to do all his operating from the Radio Club up there due to HOA regs. He jus pops his 7300 into a case, drives over there, & uses their L7. He always sounds great! Great for the shack or on the run, this radio, becz it's SDR, is a game-changer!

Still watching, but I thought I'd mention something that they probably won't mention.
Regarding the USB port. If you're running Linux for your OS, you won't need to download any drivers. Just plug it in and you'll have two /dev/ttyUSB devices and the sound card magically appear. No drivers needed.
    I love linux.

I just spent much of the day comparing the receive on this radio. I put it up against the TS 590SG. The 590 sounded muddy compared to the 7300. The audio was far clearer on the 7300. Settings were set as close as possible. Everyone agreed that the 7300 sounded better no matter how we tweaked the 590. The 590's NR even on the lowest setting was far to aggressive clipping off the treble way to much. The 7300 had a smoothness and clarity the 590 couldn't touch.

    • @midwestmsc1361
      @midwestmsc1361 Před 7 lety

Ron Edwards- I have a 590, and you are correct. Audio is muddy, which is odd, considering it is a kenwood.
I bought a RadioShack Ezt speaker, and did some tweeting with the filters and actually improved audio quite a bit.
It is band to band, but try the difference filters and adjust the Hi/low for better results.
Having said all that, it really needs to be connected to a computer with appropriate KW SW., and adjusted from there for best RX/TX audio.

7:02 "They like the gadgets, they like the ability to have a smooth user interface" What he said there is very true for me. I'm unlicensed and have been putting it off for years now, I'm currently 24. Everybody has different preferences and in my case I enjoy a snappy responsive interface above all else, when I press any button I want feedback instantly (i.e. changing frequency or toggling features). Waiting on my display to draw a window before my next input has registered not only slow but irritating too.
This radio is overkill for my needs but just thought that some of you might be interested in another point of view.

I have been using this radio for a while now. My biggest gripe is that the antenna tuner won't tune as wide a range as I would like. It's a bit narrow. Probably not enough room in there for more parts. I use an external tuner for a couple of troublesome bands. My K3, KX3 have no problems tuning up on all bands.

Nice. I read an a review on Hamradioscience, April 10, that said . . " Recorded transmissions can be be played back over the air, if someone wants to know what their audio sounds like. " I read the manual, and talked to Icom, and they said that this feature may not be available; he wasn't too sure. Can you confirm if this feature is, or is not available on the IC-7300. Thanks, '73 Bob

Just to let those that want Large Waterfalls and Spectrum. I sold my first IC 7300 because of the fact that it had a small screen and I love large Waterfalls and Spectrum, but then it dawned on me to get a T/R Switch made from MFJ called model 1708. This allows the same antenna to be shared between the ICOM IC 7300, while providing with the same antenna, a receive only by way of a relay locking out the SDR of your choice from getting fried by the IC 7300 when transmitting, because the relay protects the SDR. Now I can receive and transmit on the IC 7300, while at the same time I can receive on the FIFI SDR I built and Enjoy waterfalls on both the IC 7300 and my 23 Inch computer screen! It requires a mod to tie the Transmit and Antenna connector together to both receive on the IC 7300 and SDR at the same time, because natively the 1708 comes with it being deaf on the IC 7300 side. This takes care of that and allows dual reception.... So buy the IC 7300 and the 1708 and enjoy!
