Dream theater is one of the most under-rated or under heard rather, progressive rock bands in the last century. They have influenced more drummers, guitarists, singers, bassists and keyboardist, than any other band in our lifetime...yet airplay isn't there. But the fan base is! DREAM THEATER FOREVER

Dream Theater were fans of the abstract and trippy prog music of Frank Zappa, Yes, King Crimson, etc... but in recent years, they have been taking out current acts that are in the "math metal" category of complex and unusual arrangements - Tesseract, Between the Buried & Me, Animals as Leaders, etc... Bands who are popular w/ the musicianship crowd...
"The Alien" sounds like a track that was inspired by those futuristic aspects of the genre.
According to Mike Portnoy (ex-drummer of Dream Theater), the band was never about 'showing off' their skills... It was more about challenging themselves musically and keeping it fresh as players and performers. Portnoy said that the band could have played their 1 hit song 'Pull me under' ... but it was boring for him playing it at soundcheck... and performing it repeatedly... They made an effort to keep the song off their setlist and introduce new songs every tour they did, making each tour a unique experience for fans.
Mike Portnoy actually quit Dream Theater in 2010 because he had been working w/ the band for 25 years and felt that they were becoming "stale"... He reached a point where he wanted to work w/ other artists and try different things... He started w/ filling in for Avenged Sevenfold... then did the band Adrenaline Mob... and then just worked w/ a number of acts that sounded nothing alike since 2011 - Transatlantic, Neal Morse Band, Flying Colors, The Winery Dogs, Sons of Apollo, Liquid Tension Experiment... just to name a few. Portnoy even recently played on Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci's solo instrumental album 'Terminal velocity' in 2020 and did a tour w/ his former bandmate.
In his lifetime, Jimi Hendrix hated performing sets of his popular songs on tour... So, he kept writing new songs and every time he would tour, the setlist would change because he wanted to do new things every time.
Dream Theater have the same collective mentality - keep trying new ways to challenge themselves musically and entertain the fans... Their heroes Rush were the same way, always trying new things to move forward with... Often, it wouldn't work for their popularity, but it made the band happy creatively... Hopefully, their fans would come back to see what they were doing w/ every new record and see the tour.

El Estepario Siberiano wants to show off his skills, and he does it brillliantly. DT shows their skills too, but that is not the goal. The goal of allmost any band in the world is to use the learned skills as good as possible to perfectly replay the musical idea behind the written song, and so does DT. They are simply overwhelmingly good at any aspect of making music.
Right now I am practizing to better control my legs/feet for double bass stuff. Althou I never played in a metal band and maybe never will. I need those skills to be able to play the music right. I just want to play our songs as realistic/precise/good as possible. Without technical skills this is impossible. In the end it's allways about the song, not even about the band!
