  • Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss are in the thick of the SEC West race as they head into UGA this weekend, but on Late Kick Live Ep 451 Josh Pate responded to leaked audio Thursday that captured the moment Lane Kiffin kicked a player off the team for not showing up for 2 weeks. What is the proper way to handle things as the head coach of a major College Football program? Is the player in the wrong to disappear for an extended period even when using mental health as the reason? And that's really the bottom line. You know if anybody would have sympathy for this kid it's me because I had mental health issues in college. I had to take a semester off because shit got real, but I learned a hard lesson that just because I had a good reason for the things that I did or not doing things I was supposed to do I still have to deal with the consequences. And that's just life. I don't think Layne is some evil monster that if you come to him and say you're struggling he's going to immediately kick you off the team. But after two weeks ppl gonna assume you just quit.

      That's why "mental health" excuses are bs! Anything can be because of mental health, you can't prove I'm lying, so I could use that excuse when I don't feel like doing something... If it can be used as a credible excuse, then it must be provable! Fuck all these mental health screaming, fragile fucking children! Without even trying to discredit someone's mental health struggles, showing up to meet and have a conversation with your head coach shouldn't be something you have to 'be ready' for. That's bare minimum stuff. As someone who played division 1 college soccer, where there's a limited amount of scholarships that have to be distributed throughout the entire roster, seeing someone try to take advantage of a situation like this really pisses me off. I started basically as a walk-on who was viewed as 'good practice depth' (actual term my coaches used) and worked my ASS off to eventually become a 2x all conference team player and EARN the scholarship money i was able to get later on. It really angers me knowing this kid doesn't even have to show up or do anything and still have his scholarship..... the fact he had the nerve to call kiffin disrespectful... what's disrespectful is him walking around campus having everything he has paid for when he doesn't contribute to anything

      On a side note. In my 30 years on the job, I've only once got my ass chewed for anything. My coworkers always thought I was nuts but anytime things went sour, before the day was out I made a trip to my boss's office to fill him in. Always ahead of the curve, and always had a solution. At minimum you respond when you are contacted by your employers, or coaches of the university who is providing you with something the majority of high school players dream of, elite coaching and training, practicing against the best, paid degree, food, housing, stipends, NIL, etc. Yeah, you BETTER respond ASAP. What bugs me most is the *explicit judgement* & vilification of Coach Kiffin by accredited accounts immediately after hearing this short clip with little exposition or thought.
    The judgement & assumptions made en masse may help explain why so many more people are afraid to speak, act, or even show up like in this case for fear of being absolutely bombarded with hate & anger, *all while pointing the finger at someone else.* It feels like more often we'd rather make someone the bad guy rather than try to *understand* anyone outright.
    Coaches gotta coach, & I've lost jobs for not showing up due to atrocious mental health. But coaches saved me, so to speak. Habits, accountability & putting my name on it were some of the most crucial things to getting out of not showing up (& it still sometimes happens). I encountered a similar situation a couple of years ago when a team member no-showed us for weeks (he reached out to me once for assistance, I replied and got no response) and the team member in question got fired. If I was going to be away for multiple days at a time, I would make it a point to tell someone what is going on and provide a daily update. If he did this in the military (Navy vet here), he would be confined to the ship/base for a period of time as determined by his CO or get sent to court martial. Some companies consider that if you were gone for three days with no explanation, then you effectively quit your job.

Head coaches at major programs aren’t exactly rolling around in spare time as it is. A lot of these young people are using mental health as an excuse to be unaccountable and emotionally incontinent. @@chrisburd9751 yeah something was wrong, alright: the guy skipped out and refused to even explain. His job is to kick him off the team for being completely unaccountable to his teammates and coaches. And he did it. It’s not like the guy told them he was gonna end his own life or something and they just ignored him. He just bailed and is using mental health as an excuse, like so many young people are unfortunately being conditioned to do. • @inconnu4961
      @inconnu4961 Před 7 měsíci

      Do you take FMLA when you have your moments? FMLA does quite a bit to help us who struggle with things. Employers are more patient now (depending on the industry) if one has a documented history of it. of course employers need to have a standard to hold people by or everyone would do that, but it is now being seen like other midical issues, and employers can NOT willy-nilly fire people because of their medical issue.(without opening themselves up to issues with a lawsuit or government complaints)

    • @theonlytennusee
      @theonlytennusee Před 7 měsíci

      @@inconnu4961 , I have to call my employer and my FMLA advocate and let them know of my episode. I can’t simply not show up or not communicate it. And if these steps are not taken by me, my employer can willy-nilly fire me. It takes monumental effort on my part, but I do it. And then I ignore everyone and everything else in life.
      There are requirements on both sides to protect both employees and employers. This is why a player who has signed papers to play for a team can’t just say he's not ready to talk, ghost his responsibilities, and expect to keep his roster spot. If he couldn't talk, his doctor, therapist, or specialist should have spoken for him in written form as mine did.
      When my employer was informed, he referred me to both FMLA and short-term disability.

He had no problem taking the money and taking the free ride to a SEC School. He doesnt have to be great or anything, Kiffin is literally asking for the BARE MINIMUM out of this young man. Just show up to practice and meetings. Hell, im a father of a 8 year old boy and would never let him quit or take a "break" because its hard for 2 weeks, let alone a 21yr old.
