    • @Chi-cd3ke
      @Chi-cd3ke Před měsícem +7

      Or there's a police presence so crime has gone down. It's not that hard to follow that logic. I'm here in Chicago. I do feel safer seeing police on the L. It's pretty much a psych ward after 9

      @Jmi391 I speak for myself. I feel safer. In Chicago, white people I talk to have completely abandoned public transportation because there's too much going on. • @Jmi391
      @Jmi391 Před 26 dny +4

      @@Chi-cd3ke You’re not thinking critically. No one is nervous of police themselves no one said that but the fact that your brain has went there shows me a lot about u and how u think. The police presence is what makes people nervous because the police being there usually means that something went down or something is wrong especially if they are walking around armed. People walking around taking defensive or offensive measures doesn’t tend to make people feel safe it actually makes them feel that danger is near and that’s what she is talking about and that’s what the surveyed people in New York have stated as well. Speaking for yourself is speaking for yourself you are one person and we are talking about a city full of people that have spoken about the police presence in the subway making them feel unsafe and this has been documented as she stated in the video. It has nothing to do with being guilty and wanting to duck police because of “doing dirt” that is so stupid and such a simple way of looking at things.

      We need actual person to person democracy within our communities. We need ordinary people to have the real ability to decide on the civil and economic direction of our society. @@SalamHerbs-db5nt this made no sense lol. If the people have actual control of their lives, they would not ask for free stuff because there would be no one to ask. They would produce their basic needs themselves. There would be no state, because there would be no institution by which some social class has control over another. Majority rule can be addressed in numerous ways (giving minority groups veto power over decisions that directly affect them, cosensus or consent based democracy, and so on). The state is the problem. But the solution to the alienation of the state is real communal decision making.

      @@rachelspence2339 glad we can have a casual dialogue, i appreciate you reciprocating the sentiment! i definitely don't deny that every individual has the capacity to improve themselves, to improve their lives, and their community; i just think that there are so many systemic issues that we really need to come together to deal with too.
      personally, i think the reason why things seemingly get worse no matter who's in office is because, to a certain extent, it doesn't matter; people have no tools to hold them accountable. there's nothing letting us really affect the way anything is handled, only the people who handle it; unions are probably our most powerful tool to pressure government into doing anything, and nyc has a history of union busting ranging all the way back to the late 1800s in brooklyn.
      when you add to that the nature of how wealthy people continue to accumulate more and more money, giving them more political sway, giving them more opportunities to further exploit workers to make even MORE money, and it becomes very clear why everything seems to continuously get worse overall. this may be optimistic or naive, but i genuinely think most crime is not born from misguided people but the terrible conditions they have to endure, poverty drives people to steal, a lack of mental health resources drive people to do all sorts of things, and budget cuts reducing the aid we can offer whomever may be in need, in favour of lining some police chief's pockets, is nothing short of tragic.

    Olayemi Olurin needs to sit at every table where serious discussions are held. She was prepared, clear, concise and so prepared that she provided facts (not feelings). Ms. Olurin was so prepared even when the mayor pivoted, she followed his lead but he still couldn’t keep up. This is was journalism looks like. Just the facts, no feelings. When TBC can’t manage the conversation, bring in people like Ms. Olurin to facilitate the conversation. Mayor Adams couldn’t even look at her because he was not prepared to be held accountable. @@x01021 there's no way that in 2024 this is not a disingenuous question. You obviously know why a black woman would say this about cops and you obviously know why black people in general do not trust cops and you obviously know that while Asian Americans and Asians in general have been targets of real violence in recent years, they do not have a monopoly on being attacked on the train. Our society does not need more cops. It needs social services and to house the homeless. Cops do not stop crime. They just punish people.

      @x01021 It becomes no different than how certain schools are built for violence (reinforced doors, hiding spaces, complexes deigned like Gears of War maps, 24/7 surveillance with less and less regard for privacy). A bunch of kitted out officers and national guard members posture around can foster an environment of paranoia once the crime dies down. If it goes back up after they leave, then they'll want to bring them back and keep them there. Instead of getting to whatever the cause is, we're a culture of constantly treating the symptoms. That means more cops with more firepower than what citizens are even allowed to have, more surveillance, and more scrutiny for what used to be relatively inconsequential things. At that point, we consent to living in a dystopia.
