The German town with the disgusting name - Darmstadt

  • Darmstadt is a city in southwest Germany. With its four universities it is famous for sciences and popular with students, and it has got nice places like the Ludwigshöhe, Mathildenhöhe or the Großer Woog, a lake in the city centre. The only strange thing about it: its name. Darmstadt literally means Bowel City. How could that happen? What is the history of that name?

I spent my 3 years of military duty in Darmstadt, Ludwigshoehe was a ten minute walk from my Kaserne, Cambrai-Fritsch, which unfortunately no longer exists. It was leveled to make room for new housing..

Thanks for posting. My ancestors are majorly from Pfungstadt, Darmstadt-Dieburg, Hesse. They came to the United States as Lutherans searching for religious freedom. I would love to visit this place someday.

When I was 14 I had a German pen pal in Gross Gerau and his family took me to Darmstadt and I loved it. Such a beautiful place. My first experience of Germany. I was from a small village in England and I was so in love with Darmstadt. So beautiful
