What I Learned From My First Active Imagination Experience

  • Carl Jung's Red Book introduced me to active imagination; in this video, I interpret my first active imagination, (something which Jung himself did).

In Jung's Red Book, in the introduction, editor Sonu Shamdasani writes, "[Jung] argued that one should treat the fantasies completely literally while one was engaged in them, but symbolically when one interpreted them." (2009 ed., The Foundation of the Works of C.G. Jung, p. 217). The most important thing was to experience the active imagination, but there was nonetheless value in interpreting it (ibid.).
Dream interpretation, as well as interpreting fantasies, myths, and even active imagination are very common features of Jung's work, such interpretation also being recommended by Robert Johnson in his book, Inner Work. Also of note is that it is not necessarily the shadow which you will encounter in active imagination; I did not here. In fact, I am of the opinion that categories such as the "shadow" are clean-cut, simple representations of realities of the subconscious that are, in fact, messier and much more complex. Jung and Freud systematized their observations of the unconscious; however, I do not believe their systems (or anyone's) entirely capture the full complexity of the human mind, nor do I believe that either believed their systems did so.
I hope you find this edifying!

My first image was a plague doctor, with white mask, black clothes, holding a scythe. His name, Arafel. He basically explained to me my own inner fears inside the medical profession and how to deal with them, which was mind-blowing. I had some other sessions since. Amazing therapy.

i had a similar experience my first time but i didn't really know i was active imagining at the time, so i didn't explore much and i didn't speak with the characters i found. it started in a field and there was cut hay piled up in big piles, not bailed, hand cut and piled. There was a man in overalls and dingy white tshirt. he pointed down a dirt road I'd never seen before but was familiar and I knew it was called Waxton Rd. He said "forward is the intention of will" then we got in an old pickup and drove down Waxton Rd. Next thing I know I'm laying in a bed in an attic room looking up at a round window with 4 sections (like a solar cross) it was dark now but the moon must've been full because it had the window shining. Then from down stairs I heard an old woman say " Frozen hearts thaw on frozen lands" What she and the man said was said so casually it baffled me. what he said I get, i'm prone to procrastination. but what she said I still dont really get. The window also stood out to me because I have had a reoccurring dream location, I've always called my house. Basically its a place made of rooms I've spent a lot of time in. when i was young there wasn't many rooms but space for them. everytime i would come across a set oof stairs that went up into the darkness but I could aways see the round window, with the moon shing through.

The first time I did it, an image of a tiger with black and golden stripes stood out to me. I did not believe that was the image that I was supposed to receive since it was a tiger and not a person so I opened my eyes and close it again. The SAME image came back and I went along with it. The tiger said I could call it "black tiger". After speaking to it, I found out that it could respond intelligently.

That isn’t unusual in many other cultures. Active imagination is also called shamanism and practitioners frequently are adopted by a power animal that has sentience and will communicate with you. It can be a giant snake, a bear, a wolf or about any animal that decides to visit you and speak with you.

My opinion is that he did know.
I myself am pagan, and Woden (Anglo Saxon name for Odin) is the creator. He provide us soul, breath, and consciousness, which for me indicates that I have an eternal connection to him in those areas: Life, Mind, and Soul.
So from my perspective, your subconscious may not be able to "predict the future", but may be able to intuit a "coming event" or something on the horizon. It is connected to the divine spark in which we share essence with the All Father. Rather even when I was a-religious I knew this to be the case and my subconscious actually shocked me into awareness with it. It was able to precisely recite a quote to me by Voltaire that I later heard about two weeks later in a speech that I was watching online. So, it can be very specific and intuitively relate good information, I suppose it just depends on whether or not it thinks you need it or, more importantly, can handle it.
Just some food for thought :) I am going to pick this up again very soon, as I now am a bit more mature and can understand symbolism with more depth.

I just found your channel. Fascinating discussion and one that I really grok. I am currently working a high call volume phone support. and I'm so tired of talking... super energy drain. I'm in the wrong work, but this is a nicely put recommendation to honor this part of myself even when on the clock.
