Lorewatch: Junkrat & Roadhog - Overwatch Lore & Speculation

- Australia was hit as hard as any other nation in the Omnic Crisis, the coastal cities all but destroyed by the brutal conflict. This led to an overwhelming desire for peace in the aftermath, and with both human and Omnics attempting to rebuild the Australian government made a fateful decision - to gift the Omnium and much of the surrounding Outback to the Omnics.
Over time the displaced populace would form the ALF - Australian Liberation Front - a militia with the aim of reclaiming their land. This new conflict came to a sudden and dramatic end with the destruction and resultant nuclear explosion of the Omnium.
Even with the Outback irradiated and barren, the ALF did not abandon their reclaimed home. Instead they chose to stay, clowly succumbing to the effects of the radiation. Junkertown grew up in the ruins of the Omnium, a lawless and cutthroat society.
Two of these Junkers are now running rampant across the globe, a duo of crime and chaos. Roadhog, former ALF member and Junkertown Enforcer alongside Junkrat, pyromaniac and keeper of one of the most valuable secrets of the day. Together no job is too big, no score too small, and they bring chaos and insanity to the world of Overwatch.

As an Australian, I absolutely love these guys. They're self-made, libertarian, patriotic and anti-authoritarian junk collectors that despise suited authority and adopt a Mad Max aesthetic. Sounds like a pair of national heroes to me.

With the announcement of Ecopoint: Antarctica we may look at moving Mei up the list. I've only had a brief look around there on the PTR but there are bits and bobs I might be able to work with :)

my take on junkrat's backstory (or what i think it is) is that his parents were ALF fighters. when the explosion happened, his mother was killed and the radiation took his arm, causing it to be removed. this scarred him for life and caused him to go insane and be obsessed with explosions. (i looked and he would've been 4 when the explosion happened, so he would be able to remember it.)

The best lorewatch series
So far there are two items in the overwatch universe that not much is known about, except that they are extremely valuable. One is Junkrat's treasure. The other is the purple glowing cube that Talon is after in McCree's comic, Trainhopper. Could these items be one and the same? Or perhaps of the same sort?
It's possible. We have no clue what Junkrat did with whatever he found after all - like Hanzo says he could hardly hide it on his person. There are a number of hanging threads that Blizzard needs to build on and these are definitely two of them - if it's one and the same item well... would make for a good story!

Would be very cool. I'd love to just see Junkertown to be honest, apart from the shots of Sydney in the Crisis and in the Going Straight comic we have no clue what Australia looks like, and the Outback even less so.

I didn't notice in till this vid that in the comic Junkrat put a peace symbol on his concussion mine. The irony of peace on a bomb.

whatever the treasure is it is obviously much bigger than we are imagining, even hanzo try's to get junkrat to tell him where it is.
Yup, and Hanzo doesn't generally give a damn about anything other than Hanzo so must be of huge importance

Ah yes, the cube that most people seem to have forgotten about. That's a thread Blizzard have left hanging for ages - the web seems like a great time to pick it back up.
Low Mana Gaming Another hanging thread: Anubis, could the god AI be the entity at the center of the web? I doubt it simply because usually related characters / events have similar features or symbols, and Anubis, doesn't appear to have any sort of eye insignia close to the symbol on the web.
On closer inspection of the picture of Anubis on the Overwatch Wiki, it DOES have an eye-like symbol on the chest albeit running vertically. However eyes are very symbolic in Egyptian mythology, and motif might be a coincidence.

Shame really, between her, Meka and the 'Kaiju' omnic there's a lot to work with there. Just needs a lot of story stuck on to those bones.

The main hope I have with D.Va is that she was shown to have an upgraded skin that they use in the shorts. The only place I can think that would have been used would be for 'We Are Overwatch' but as that was only for 3-4 seconds I'm hoping it's a sign of a short in development for her.

could have been a part of the omnic central organizations in that region, probably shed some light on them that could imply quite a bit. but doesnt get in the way of blowing shit up.
if anything it would be an awesome story if it were omnic survivors that roadhog decided to spare in the same vein as a soldier sparring a child. would also explain why everyone was hunting him

We've been collecting info from every source possible since the early days of Overwatch, be that tweets, blogs, lore panels, interviews, articles, comics, shorts, in game etc etc :) we have a large repository built up at this point. Still loads of gaps though!

Zarya is a hero of Russia, she's... probably on the good side of the spectrum, but she has a strong distrust of Omnics. Will get to do her soon ;)
