Remember when it was a logical timeline of old to new updates of what your friends are up to? Now it's a chaotic tangle of random noisy adverts and alerts that one of your friends has commented on a photo that you'd seen four days ago. It wouldn't launch today in its current form.
Sometimes when I scroll down the feed and something interesting caught my eyes the feed just refreshes itself 🤷🏿♂️🙄 oh yeah too many damn ads 😑
@@chosenArchitecIG does that same thing. I deleted both but when I was on IG, that would irritate me to no end
On the left side of the home page there is a link to your feeds. Click on it and you can choose to look at friends, pages or group feeds. You still get ads but it isn't as randomly bad as your home page.
Turn off notifications on a post if you don't care if anyone comments on it. There are quite a few ways to make Facebook less of a pain.
Yup. Deleted it after trying to reach out to family when I was cut off my original Facebook by my own mother and they would only let me friend and message certain people. They were telling me who I knew, and who I could speak to... If I didn't have mutuals, I couldn't friend them or message them. So I started adding people I had just barely known, and that just ended badly and the whole thing wound up with me just posting a goodbye to my old life and family and friends... Literally one person has reached out. I am dead to the world.
It’s unusable.
Just checked my Farmville on FB for the first time in 15 years and it's all been bulldozed over and replaced with Tesco Metros, Costas, food banks and charity shops.
Mine actually became an independent sovereign state for tax purposes 😭
I started farming in Ukraine. Its not going so well now........
Every 4 months, I remember I have Facebook and log in to check things out I'm astounded how much more shittier it has become. Perpetual trash heap.
The last half dozen notifications that reminded me about Facebook have all been scams that Facebook then refused to do anything about. Why would I ever start using it again?
"Click this dodgy link and tell us your bank details" > Report > "We've taken a look and found that this content doesn't go against our Community Standards."
If you don’t need it maybe deactivate it? Go cold turkey.
Zuckerberg didn’t create facebook he stole it and pays the man he stole it from billions of dollars.
Same here. When I log in now almost all of my feed is random memes and "content" that the algorithm is spewing out at me. Only a small fraction is actually posts from people I know.
It's absolutely awful now. I only keep the account going as it's the only reliable way I have of keeping in touch with some people.
@@jmckendry84 This is me as well. I have some groups I follow that keeps me hanging on, but seeing my 'friends' utter lies is pathetic and everything else is some sort of advertisement.
Remember, these "70 year old people" used to be flourishing 50 year olds when Facebook was trendy. Time has a way with us all.
OK boomer
Closed my FB account in 2020. Zero regrets.
Also zero friends...
"friends"
I use it but only to follow a few cat videos.
You missed out on the covid vaccine conspiracy posts by an acquaintance 5 times a bloody day.
Stopped using Facebook since 2020, Twitter since 2022, Tumblr since 2021, and recently Instagram since February this year and honestly I have not looked back. I also felt like I haven’t been compelled to document my life as much on camera (like OOTDs or foodp*rn shots) but I do feel relieved that I don’t have to document or broadcast every aspect of my life and just live for myself. I also don’t have to be on my toes all the time around people that don’t matter to me (like ex university classmates who are racist/misogynistic etc). The blockage of access from these people has been so great on my mental health, I wonder why I didn’t do this sooner. (Yes I also stopped using dating apps a year ago and completely given up on that and somehow my relationships with people, especially friendships have improved a lot better). Generally more productive than ever by quitting my previous job and doing my masters’ now. Who knew quitting social media would change my life around?
Make sure to go back and delete the accounts. Any trace left behind is a risk.
The ones that drove me away a decade ago were the motivational quoters. Just a picture or coloured background with some words in italics that someone ‘smart’ may or may not have once said telling you to be a better person. I’m good thanks.
"Make Facebook Great Again" - Jeethus Krist
I once had to sit through a 3hr work "training" on using social media where the consultants encouraged us to populate our work FB page with regular motivational quotes to keep audiences interested. The sad thing was my workplace was literally a local news outlet. We had plenty of real content to share but that wasn't seen as attracting enough attention. 😑
There's also those clearly insecure people who'll post a black and white picture of Tommy Shelby looking all brooding, or Tom Hardy doing something "manly" like putting on boxing wraps, accompanied by a cringy quote that says something like "don't mistake my kindness for weakness. If you cross me, you'll find out just how dangerous I can be."
I "forgot" Facebook 5 years ago.
i dumped my fb back in 2011 as a college sophomore
Yeah, I dumped Facebook quite a long time ago too. Couldn’t stand the endless shite from people who I didn’t know or care about. I dread to think what it’s like now.
Me too.....
Did that 8 years ago, haven't looked back.
I've "forgotten" about about 12 years ago and so delighted that I did.
Fondly remembering the days when my mum would tag me in a quiz that asked for my favourite city, first school, first pet's name, mother's maiden name, national insurance number and bank details
I never had an account on facebook, but that probably hasn't stopped them from opening one for me.
This is great, I think I'll post it on Facebook, so my older friends can all speculate if I hate them
Facebook was a terrible blight on humanity.
Wahts' even more depressing is that TikTok, Insta and LinkedIN are ten times worse.
It’s kind of like rumble now. Just a place for people to display their worst sides. One of my aunts passed 10 years ago and instead of leaving up all the amazing family history she’d carefully documented, her kids deleted her page. Kind of devastating really. So the people who DO want it to stay forever as an information source are lost while the ridiculous things survive.
All that will be left in the end are the dog memes and spidermen.
Why would they do that when the "memorial page" feature exists? 💀
The fake science posts are the thing most pushing me closer to deactivating my FB account. 😅
That is actually the stuff i love. Like on YT, Flat earthers are awesome! I mean they are idiots, but they are awesome!
@@addie_is_me A blatantly AI or doctored image with the caption, 'A real photo of...' and the comments will be, 'God is great' or 'The wonders of nature never cease to amaze...' Grinds my goat!
@@addie_is_mefor a while I had the planets as my FB banner except earth looked like a disc
@@DJWHITE_ I have some bad news for you.
Both sides of that interaction are artificial (bots, AI, troll or whatever) and yes the absolute purpose is to ''grind your goat', engagement is engagement after all.
@@deadly_dave But for how much longer will they get my engagement/view?! 😅
Deleted Facebook in 2019, haven’t looked back. Toilet of a website. Same with Twitter and Instagram.
Deleted all accounts from social media & got happy / went outside! ;) youtube & netflix on occasion, is more than enough.
Wouldn't consider Netflix a social media account but CZcams is the only good one to keep. In fact it's the only one associated with positive impacts on mental health
It’s just ads for more pages.. dogshit, really
My FB is just full of music industry 'entrepreneurs' and crappy ads. Some people haven't figured out that hustle culture peaked 10 years ago and has been dying a slow, miserable death ever since.
Locked out and forgot about FB years ago and never looked back. It feels so much better.
I abandoned FB two years ago. It feels great. People who do not need to know anything about me know nothing about me and I do not know anything about people I do not care about.
It´s a liberating feeling not knowing anything about anybody and knowing nobody knows anything about me.
I cancelled my account about that time, is that what you mean you did? Despite the reluctance to let you go (rather pitiful), it takes about 20 seconds.
@@mikerodent3164 Exactly.
I abandoned it in 2015.
My biggest problem with Facebook now is that every third post is and ad, and about 29 of every 30 post (I counted) is from a page I don't even follow. The last 1 is from a friend or page I follow.
Got off Facebook years ago. To me it was a medium where you came across people you least wanted to be in touch with , or know. No thank you.
For me it was that I tried to have private conversations with the odd friend, by utilising the little chat window on the bottom right, only to find myself ignored by those people because they were too busy posting attention-seeking nonsense on their walls.
That, and the fact that they refused to remove a video of a woman physically abusing/beating her child because it "did not" violate their terms; AND the sketchiness around privacy/data just made Fuckbook seem like a really shit place.
For many, it was just a convenient tool to use to bully and harass me for their own pathetic needs
I met both my then girlfriends through Facebook which was the only good it's done for me
Whenever I used to go on there, I found out another former colleague had died. So I stopped going on there and presumably no-one has died since.
I used to have a timeline of what friends were up to.
Now it's 95% adverts/ AI generated crap and tosh.
If I pause and flicker my eyes for a second at one then I just get more of that shite for days.
Sometimes it gets me and I comment on a crappy local newspaper at the other end of the country, I may as well install the town crier in my ear after that.
If i see something interesting ( rare ) and want to come back to it later, even a min or so, the page will refresh when I reopen it and that post is gone forever.
The only reason I'm still there is we use it to arrange group rides.
Group rides? Sounds fun
X and CZcams are like that too. I watched a vid about Trump's assassination attempt the other day . now every video is about Trump. Today I looked at a camera review, now every video is about photography. They need to dial it down.
LMAO at the Oasis-phase pic. These vids are always priceless!
Shared this with all my Facebook friends in the form of a meme with minions and daydrinking wine.
I am part of a few good groups on Facebook , relating to personal situations or to hobbies , and I would miss them very much. I admit that I rarely post outside of the groups now
I am pretty much the same. Whenever I post a status (which I only do every 6 months or so!) that even hints at politics or mentions something like transport or an environmental issue, I get a barrage of incredibly defensive comments from people I barely know, trying to argue with me.
I mostly stick to about four groups that are lovely 😊
I am too so I made a fake account with just those groups in and no friends or personal details so there's no hassle.
We need discussion boards back
So how do you cope with the hideous fake news bar across the top, and the flood of nonsense ads and notifications that some guy you knew ten years ago has liked an ancient post of yours? Oh yes, and the zillions of 'friends' you don't even know, and the general mess of an interface that drowns out anything relevant with pages and pages of nonsense you can't be doing with every time you visit your feed? Do they still call it a feed? Oh god this has really depressed me...
@@Blitterbug I am sorry but I don’t get any news bars , I don’t get posts from people I don’t remember because I never had more than 25 or 30 ‘friends’ , I see many ads but scroll through , and you don’t see these inside a group.
I often advocate for friends and family to deactivate their facebook accounts, and I seem to get the same response from all of them; "I only really use it to keep in touch with [distant friend/relative]". All while doomscolling facebook, on their phone.
So, Myspace gets replaced in like 3 years, but Facebook is still a discussion almost 2 decades later??? we really are stuck since 1999 more like were stuck in 2010
Id say it took more like 5 years for myspace to really start declining but yea I agree otherwise
Haha the Russell Brand bit was spot on.
Love that you used a Nintendo DD as a Nokia Communicator.
My sister (oversharer, conspiracy theorist etc) still uses the term “poke”. I was really confused at first (I’m very techie and she isn’t), it took me ages to remember that it used to be a thing. Anyway I never see her posts as she blocked me sometime during lockdown (or as she calls it “plandemic”), so every cloud…..
Poking people is indeed a rude thing to do. Here in Germany, as I remember, Facebook called it „anstubsen“, which sounds nicer, doesn’t it? It‘s way nicer to „nudge“ someone down a cliff, than to „poke“ him - who would disagree to that.
I'm proud to say I've never had a Facebook account.
I'm prouder to say that I have NEVER been in a Whack Ronald, Burger Queen, or any of the pizza chains. Who needs them when Wimpy cooks for you, and the quality is way higher.
How do you find out when funerals are? Amongst other life events, I've missed a few deaths and/or funerals and barely made it to others because people assume that everyone is addicted to it so only post on there. I stopped using my account in 2018 but kept it for checking now and then..
I can't say that, but I get the same feeling when I say I've never signed up for tiktok
The issue is that many valuable informative expert /hobbyist forums moved to Facebook groups. This is the only reason I keep it. Also it was a great space to coordinate help for war refugees we had here (PL).
That said Michael's spot on. Especially on user types.
Coerced to try the damn thing an eternity ago and must be one of the few who read the terms and conditions.
Quit about 13 years ago as "Timeline" was being sprung upon users with every post you ever made suddenly scrollable! Took an age to find the "Delete forever" button and am so glad I did.
👉 poked ya, michael!
I miss C&A, last time I saw one was in Prague in 2018!
I still shop there from time to time here in Holland.
C & A in Hungary.
Still exists in Portugal!
I believe there is one in Vienna
Facebook is terrible. It encourages so many negative behaviours in people.
Yep. 95% of my feed is random "content", and a lot of that is ragebait...I think the algorithm assumes that now I'm 40 I'm probably very angry about cyclists, 20mph speed limits, and electric cars.
Crazy how at one point I was addicted to Facebook in the early 2010s. Would log and off on every 5 min. Got worse when I got a smartphone. Now I hardly use it.
2.9 Billion users with 1.1 billion of them being bots
big problem : it's still the only platform where you can have some sort of local community with groups and events. local music scenes still use Facebook because there is simply no other platform to do so... and thats terrible
The poke feature has just been been reinstated, I’m abusing it heavily.
Facebook is very useful for discovering and participating in special interest groups. If you use it for keeping in touch with grandparents then 1. you are much younger than me, and 2. you will be perpetually bored.
I joined Facebook when it was strictly for college students. (I was in college from 2004-2008) When it expanded and started letting anyone and everyone sign up,
THAT was the beginning of the downfall 👎🏾
I miss MySpace
Tom misses you!!!!
And Bebo 🙂
I miss your space too
I miss MySpace too
I miss LiveJournal. Still exists, but nobody I care about uses it and with good reason since the sale.
I have a shitposting account that I use to post in private shitposting groups and occasionally check my personal one. It is genuinely awful, just the thickest people you know posting personal nonsense and dangerous misinformation. I have tried numerous times to get my Mum off it for her own sake.
Fun fact, my wife and I met because she poked me on Facebook. True story! 😂
Out if all the miserable comments, at least one heartwarming one. All the best to you both!
On the rare occasions when I reactivate it, it's fun for a day or so, then I just get overwhelmed with
1. Recommended pages all about weed ( I live in the UK so that's pretty uncomfortable but...ok I guess if i can flag up that i dont want to see that)
2. Conspiracy crap, often violent and full of misinformation that I'm sure is not lawful in a bunch of places.
3. Endless pictures of some celebrity with a quote they never said.
I might tolerate some of the above if clicking the 'I don't want to see this ' feature actually did literally anything.
I'm glad my not alone
But sad its happening at all
I agree with what you say. I used it for a very short time a long time ago then cancelled. I do not regret cancelling.

Poke Michael, I’ll be waiting for my poke back! 😂😂
Facebook has ruined birthdays for everyone.
I’ve never done FB. But my wife does and frequently gets notifications telling her that a “friend” has just visited a certain location. Not healthy. And who cares anyway?
I cancelled my fb account about 10 years ago now. I'd go on there, notice someone had thrown a sheep at me and someone else wanted me to play some game, wonder why I'd bothered and log out. Yes, I'm a Boomer, but I have better things to do with my time.
I'm not a Boomer, but I haven't contributed on Facebook for over 5 years I guess? Last time I was there was about getting some stuff from the Marketplace. That was few months ago. But yes, definitely don't want to read all the pile of 💩 there and see all the ads.
You have lost nothing
I miss the time when there were several social networks. Now there is basically one.
Only feeling slightly attacked but can't argue 😬
( 0:14 ) Like the Jeff Crump Arctic Monkeys Photo. 😂
Hold on hold on! I've never seen two of those dogs. Am I doing something wrong (or right)?
"digital grooming" needs to become a more commonplace term because its precisely whats happened to pretty much every online conspiracy theorist via their newsfeeds
We'll look back on Zuckerberg like we did Michael Jackson, a successful weirdo.
Finally shed it early 2020. Mine was all ranting politics, which if read at breakfast time, ruined the day. I recently looked at a dogs adoption page, went on it and came straight out.
The figure of 2.9 billion users is probably accumulated users over the life of the platform, as opposed to the number of actual monthly users.
It’s popular in third world country’s
Steve Jobs had a good name for it: Fecesbook
I actually joined FB earlier this year in an attempt to form real life bonds through shared interest groups. Deleted account a couple of months later. Waste of time. Nobody on there is interested in making real friends. Ironic, considering the name of the site.
Facebook is a toilet. Facebook is the portrait of humanity secretly kept in the loft, but available for all to see online. Facebook is the Mos Eisley canteen's karaoke room. Facebook is the light that shines on the ugly side of humanity that cannot be seen otherwise. But I guess it's still not as bad as X/Twitter.
I haven't posted on FB in about 10 years. Was Okay in the beginning to see old friends I hadn't seen for 15 years but then when I was getting updates every 5 minutes about what said friend was up to in their mundane lives, it got too much.
I can't remember why I left but I think they had warned me over taking a fascist to task.
I then saw something about a guy in the EU taking them to task for not sharing all their data on him. (The EU demanded they allow so now you 'technically' can.
I play WWF with old friends and had to log back in to reactivate my account when I change phones
Bearing in mind MY ACCOUNT HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED FOR YEARS I was amazed how easy it was to get back in. It was like just logging on.
So obviously nothing was deactivated..much to my shock..not!
Many years ago I decided to delete my Facebook profile. As I tried to do so, Facebook warned me that if I did that, all of my profile and information would be deleted forever. I was happy about that and pressed delete. Two years later I was curious, so I entered my old password. All of my profile and information popped back up and Facebook welcomed me back. It even notified all of my old contacts that I was back. Moral of this story is, never trust Facebook. Your profile exists forever, whether you want it to or not. Once you have joined Facebook, you have lost control.
It's great for finding out what's going on locally, both official events and gossip. Also good for finding out about new shops and restaurants opening locally and their opening hours
Found the bot!
😉
I frequently find that it only tells me after the event - unless it’s a paid ad.
I’m sure it’s not deliberate, much.
@@smorris12 haha, I doubt those are the kind of utilitarian functions that FB wants to be associated with
My Facebook contact parties had similar turnout volumes even back in the day
Facebook seems to be at least 75% sponsored and suggested posts, and the stuff you actually care about is in a random order and half missing.
I use it for groups about my interests.
I don't have the main app on my phone and only use messenger to keep in touch with friends and family. Ok, so I miss Birthday reminders, but at least I don't get caught in a doom scroll every time someone posts an update.
Deleted (or rather "scheduled for deletion" as they won't just let you do it) my account last month after they announced they'd use all data to train their bloody AI.

I love that nana has a deeper voice than Michael 👵🤣
I would love to see you do another one of these episodes on "online dating apps"! Love this youtube series you're doing, keep it up :D
Used it a fair amount before 2008, but now rarely use it - meaning every six months just logging in to “check on things”. Oddly wish I had used it more just to stay in touch with a few older relatives. But simply staying in touch isn’t what FB was built for, $$$.
Starting around 2008, anytime I did log it, it was increasingly depressing and gross. And then the useless wave of ads & political sharing started.
What would be nice to have is a simple online resource to check in on friends and family. Just a little album of photos and very basic updates (like, we moved, etc). And a feed not based on who posted the most. And none of the provocative or extreme look at me posts.
This video does remind me to log into FB and spend the time to find & save what I’d like to keep - some precious photos, and the details of some important events.
Hello Michael,
I have been watching your videos for a while, and I think you are a great comedian. Your political satire works remind me of “The thick of it” so much (in a good sense of course)
Greetings from Ukraine :)
I still know some millennial Facebook die-hards, and I think its because it fulfills a niche that other social networks haven't, which is as a kind of informal blogging site. Some people (maybe graduates from Live Journal) use the longer form Facebook status as a sort of blog, where they can post more detailed thoughts than it's possible to on X/Twitter or most platforms that are more picture and video based, but that are less formal and more orientated towards people you know than in published, public blog posts. We need something else that fulfills that role
I never joined Facebook, even after friends and associates tried to persuade me and (tiringly) question my decision. I might finally do it now to retain my truly alternative snobbery. Social media, like people becomes out of touch and out of date. Instagram is going that way already.
I dumped it years ago. Felt better immediately 😊
I left it a decade ago. Utter time waste, now I have jomo - the joy of missing out. Bliss!
Russell Brand catching strays
Facebook timehop reminds me of a time where i used to update my status almost on a daily basis! Lol now its about once a week! With the occasional timehop reminder 😂
What's a Facebook?
It´s a book of faces. Accessible in your local library.
Its full of lunatics. I used to play games on it and ignore the rabbit holes but they got rid of that so I got rid of them. I mean...who's feeding my chickens now?! Huh? Answer me that, Facebook.!
Poke 👉 Left facebook back in 2017! 😀Nice video!
As an individual it's possible to just use facebook as a tool for keeping in touch with a friend network around the world and see what everyone is up to. As a society FB encapsulates everything wrong with civilization and makes you despair at the lack of intelligence, knowledge, empathy, and compassion people have, not to mention the ignorance, cruelty, and exaggerated sense of id people have these days.
The only reason I have deleted it is because there are people I only communicate with messenger and I need FB for messenger. Sick of all the racist, noncy, sexists, divisive posts flooding my feed, over and above the posts I want to see from friends and family.
*haven’t deleted
I’m in my late 20’s and most people I know still use Facebook regularly! It’s way better than twitter and instagram even if it is now filled with a lot of filler.
My Space was king
Facebook was a grey, slimmed down diluted version of it
Of course everyone flocked to it instead
Went on there for the first time in about 6 months, its just ads
Don't even need it to talk to friends and family in Australia/New Zealand/US etc,
I wonder if it's still popular in third world regions like Latin America?
I have Facebook but I’m getting to the point of having Facebook is getting more boring. I have tried Instagram but I didn’t like it. I even tried TikTok but that didn’t interest me a lot. I think that social media is going downhill since it was created and went viral across the world.
I do see the point in having social media platforms including Facebook for talking to people and communicating with people but at the same time it’s just getting more depressing.
Facebook is "look at me".
Do I actually care what you happen to be doing today? Nope
I ‘closed’ my branch of Facebook some years ago.
