Classic Game Room reviews SUPER THUNDER BLADE for Sega Genesis from 1989 by Sega. Blow things up with a helicopter! CGR Super Thunder Blade review has Super Thunder Blade CZcams review gameplay recorded from Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive.
I thought I was the only one who flew in circles. LMAO. The flying in circles technique is what I use. Granted, I sometimes have to brake in some of the later levels (like those stupid caves during the second level) but I continue to fly in circles.
Very true. When I first played Super Thunder Blade (I was 6 years old) I got destroyed during the 1st level. After SEVERAL more deaths, I caught on to "flying in circles". Using the brake for level 2 (STUPID CAVES) took MUCH longer due to my stubbornness against it.
nope - that was my technique too. gonna boot this up on my pi tonight
"Brakes are for pussies." -Mark Bussler aka 'Lord Karnage', RoadBlasters, 2013
Oh man it's so fun trying to get thru the caves without brakes. Intense af
Also programmed by Yuji Naka which is why this game is indistinguishable from Sonic the Hedgehog and/or Nights.
alright!, the Classic Game Room review i have been waiting for for almost a decade is here! joy to the world!
I always loved the music in Super Thunder Blade. Instantly brings back fond memories every time I hear it.
I'm surprised no mention that the helicopter is basically inspired by Blue Thunder, even the title screen shows what looks to be a pixelated version of a scene from Blue Thunder.
He's mentioned it before in another review of Thunder Blade on the Master System I believe.
And yeah, Sega literally ripped a screenshot from the movie and digitized it for the title screen. ^.=.^
This game has the worst ending ever! To this day I remember the feeling I had when I finally beat it and all I basically got was a screen that said "Game Over". So much work for nothing.
should have put a spoiler alert dude.
That pissed me off so bad when I was a kid. I had to grind this awful, hard game and got hit with a guitar riff game over screen.
Never owned the console version, but I used to play the arcademachine every year at a winter hotel in Norway, used to beg my parents for money every night there, good memories.. Best gaming review channel on youtube Mark, thanks for the cosmic disco Truxton shirt!
This game is part of the Sega 3d collection on 3ds and its excellent on that system
Loved the arcade so was one of the first games I bought for my MD. Spent plenty of time with it back in the day.
I miss Undertow :(. Great channel tho. Hope you makin' bank, Mark.
I still remember that last level taking me forever to beat. Flying between those horizontal pillars while timing the circle pattern was rough
Definitely one of the most challenging sega genesis games. Loads of fun.
Super Thunder Blade actually came out on 1988. The 1989 release was because the Mega Drive was released in America then.
Man I had this for my Mega Drive 2 and it was so hard!! I remember wasting so much time on this game. Never got to end it but the 2nd level was most tough one I remember.
Bit of a possible trivia; the helicopter visuals that they used in the game is based on a TV helicopter from a show called "Blue Thunder". The helicopter in the show was okay, but in my opinion on 80's airborne star vehicles, Airwolf still wins when it comes to badassery.
I got this game with my Mega Drive back in 1990, lots of frustrating memories!
I have this on the PS2-PS3 SEGA Genesis compilation discs; this here is good action.
it's a very nice game with good graphics and music ; even though in easy mode it's hard to beat ; the first and third level are like jackpot where you can attain more lives with no loss and easy maneuvour of the helicopter which will pay you off in second and fourth level which are toughest with expert maneuvering along with airbrakes but overall it's a very good challenging game.
I love this game. Probably my first Genesis game after Sonic 1. Super nostalgic for me too. And I love the music. I cant think of any game with music comparable to this one.
I have that game from the Sonic's genesis collection.
I love Super Thunder Blade I play it so much on Sega Genesis Collection for PS2
Great music band name: Flying in Circles. Lord Karnage (c)
I remember this game back in 1994 by an ungle in sweden, at that time i found this game awesome, but looking at it now, it looks very vety infirior to the arcade version theres no contest about it.
Still i like this version trough.
This was the only game that I owned that I could never beat lol.
I too wish there was a galaxy quest 2, Sadly it would be lacking one Alan Rickman to make it complete.
love your channel
I could never get past the 2nd level.
And I was never aware that you could brake in this game.
alas with the passing of Alan Rickman, there will likely be no Galaxy Quest II. By grabthars hammer, what a savings.
It was the audio for me
Awesome!
Awesome, more reviews like that! And also some recent games like Yakuza zero and Nier Automata
The helicopter model in this game, as well as the cover art is from the 1983 helicopter movie, "Blue Thunder"
Isn't anyone gonna say that this Chopper is just Blue Thunder with a different name!?
i watch these reviews just for the end credits. XD
I'd have to agree with you in that fact that Space Harrier and Afterburner II (I have both for the Sega Saturn, great arcade ports by the way) are far superior games with basically the same style game play.
There's a certain charm to the awful sound and crummy graphics. Still fun :)
PC Engine version is the way to go, it's still not a great game, but it plays better than the Mega Drive version.
when is the new musha review coming out?
It would be great if Sega ported the Arcade version to the 32x Addon. Because, the MegaDrive version; it's not bad but, the Arcade version is better.
Mark went to the WWE school of looking at TV's
Hey Super Thunder Blade I Use To Beat Those
Wooohohohooo!!
Great great great great game
I liked this game back then and I still like it now.
I use to like it... I still do, but I use to, too.
(PS: Didn't actually like the game when I played it circa '91. Kinda thought it was crap)
Ellipsis of Triple Tap yeah it's one of those games with no middle ground, it usually falls into like or no like territory.
+TheL1arL1ar: Given you liked it and I didn't, at least it's batting .500 :D
Bring back undertow!!
i thought the speccy was better top down 3d
view graphical
the controls were a little bit confusing.
806 / 8 ! Excellent like / dislike ratio. Best ever 1% dislike!!! Great Stuff 80s comics
Dissapointed you didn't mention that the helicopter design was stolen verbatim from the movie Blue Thunder.
I know that old game covers liked to "borrow" designs from movies, but just taking the Blue Thunder poster and slapping a different title on it is going too far.
If you haven't read it yet you may find this interesting:
www.hardcoregaming101.net/tracing/tracing.htm
Cheers.
+Mr. Peter Stevens At least in those cases the borrowed element is a part of larger design. In case of Super Thunder Blade they looked at original poster and said "Just add some tanks and fire".
a really hard genesis game is revenge of shinobi.
Holy fuck the music is super fast in the American version. Or is the European version just really slow? It's like Sonic 1.
CGR FOR PRESIDENT
i love you mark
RIP Alan Rickman. If there was a Galaxy Quest 2, they need to mention him leading an alien revolution on a distant planet. "Never give up, never surrender!"
one of the first games i owned on my mega drive, did the UK release have those top down sections 'cos i really dont remember them even though i played this game to death
Yeah they most definitely did. I remember when I was young my mom and me used to take turns playing this, and she actually beat the entire game, which to think of now blows my mind.
holy shit a genesis review :D i've missed this show
In hard mode you could fly through most of the game by hiding in the upper left corner.
Genesis Thunderblade was so brutal shitty :)
Not a good game???
for some reason I never got into this game. maybe it just too damn hard!
bring back undertow!
'Eh, the PC engine version is better...
Not that any version of this game is really 'good', I mean, it's a pretty awesome tech demo and all, but when it comes to actually playing it, I'd much rather play Sega's 'other' "Fly in circles into the screen and shoot at things" games, preferably on the PC engine too...
Michirin9801 the music and sound effects are terrible in those version on pc engine.
Umm, I'd say that there are more good Genesis games than that, and Space Harrier II is Definitely NOT one of the best Genesis games >w>
Also, the PCE totally has far superior sound to the Genesis, always had and always will...
Even if you love shooters the Genesis won't be your favourite, that would be the PC engine...
Although the Genesis has some pretty damn good shooters, I think its strength is in action platformers, and it also has a couple good beat'em ups...
(Note: A certain blue ball is not included when I say "Good Platformers")
@Michirin9801
Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the best platformer of all time you tasteless pleb
PC versions of thunder blade and afterburner WRECK their genesis counterparts....while no version of thunder blade is that good it is rather impressive for the pc engine. a few things other things:
1.) saw ur comment on the genesis vs pc engine shooter argument...on base consoles...its ALOT closer than what people give it credit for. i borderline want to say its a tie. its not till u add in the SuperCd games where the turbo takes the genny behind the shed and beats it with a shovel.
2.) blue ball diss? yeah...seems like becoming a big youtube star has made you drunk with power! ;-)
You said avoid aids right?
I can't be the only one who sees that chopper is a blatant knockoff of Blue Thunder, right?
its shippy
Pillars, trees, aids … whatever !
Not a fair comparison, but this game shows how much better the SEGA System 16 board was.
A.B.C. Always Be Circling.
This is probably a worse Yuji Naka game than the WiiU port of Rodea The Sky Soldier... Some of the worst controls and most shallow gameplay I've experienced on the Mega Drive, the C64 version was better!
There's also a movie about this game... or this game is about the movie? anyway, I also have the game
I always sucked at the Master System version of this.
i hate this game
Still a awful port for the genesis. Not that it's sega fault hardware limitations after all.
How come he never review SNES games? something fishy about him.
+Toonses: Probably the same reason The Retro League never reviews C64/ Amiga/PC games... he probably didn't have one OR he has less fond memories of it?
Toonses He's reviewed SNES games before, just the ones that appeal to him. He's not gonna review some slow, plodding, RPG or something like that.
Toonses too much slow down
Because everyone reviews Snes games, everyone worships that ugly slow game box and ignores the Genesis. I'm grateful for Mark because he's brought alot of Gen classics to my attention that I've never heard of previously, especially shooters like Thunder Force IV, Musha, Fire shark etc.
Disclaimer: I love both consoles and they're both great but yeah, the Snes gets wayy too much attention, it's really frustrating actually.
I have no problem with people loving on the SNES if they grew up with it, the SNES is awesome, but the amount of press it gets comes off as serving to the fact nintendo is still around as a console maker. If you ask someone what their favorite titles from the console were and they answer a mario, a zelda and a final fantasy it strikes me as a little false. Just a coincidence those are titles that happen to still be around, right? Heh.
first like :)
i see you keep advertising buying your videos of reviews. so i guess one should be subjected to choosing between saving money for the actual games or your reviews of those games. decisions, decisions.....
I wish Manchester City could get a manager who knows how to defend. And I have played this game NOT.
First
This game gets too much hate. Even that elitist bastard Sega Lord X was crapping on this. Not fair at all.
Sega Lord X is right , this game sucks lol
I always loved the music in Super Thunder Blade. Instantly brings back fond memories every time I hear it.
this is a shocking game. BAD.
