Lyrics:
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
But instead, it just kept on raining
A veil of tears for the virgin birth
I remember one Christmas morning
A winter's light and a distant choir
And the peal of a bell and that Christmas tree smell
And their eyes full of tinsel and fire
They sold me a dream of Christmas
They sold me a silent night
And they told me a fairy story
'Till I believed in the Israelite
And I believed in Father Christmas
And I looked to the sky with excited eyes
'Till I woke with a yawn in the first light of dawn
And I saw him and through his disguise
I wish you a hopeful Christmas
I wish you a brave new year
All anguish, pain and sadness
Leave your heart and let your road be clear
They said there'll be snow at Christmas
They said there'll be peace on earth
Hallelujah, Noel be it heaven or hell
The Christmas we get we deserve

Sadly when you search this song on most streamers, the original Greg Lake version ranks below the covers. This is a true masterpiece and one of the best Christmas songs ever written. RIP Greg Lake.
He has the dubious honour of having died in the Great Cull of 2016.
Could not have said it better myself
Honeymoon Suite does a very worthy cover. Johnnie Dee hits a homer with the vocals!
Could not said it any better, you hit the nail on the head, as a none Christian this tells the truth.
Im not into Christmas songs, but this has a edge, great lyrics and true, as a non Christian this makes sense.
I'm 62 years old, been listening to this song for years and it still makes me cry, every time I watch the video, especially towards the end. RIP Greg and Keith

FM darlings. I’m not quite as old as you lot but I’m not far behind. Great song and lovely to hear it touches you like it does me.
Ditto completely
It's my miracle song. I suffered a miscarriage on Christmas Eve. At the hospital they confirmed this and scheduled a d&c for later that morning. I was set up to start the procedure when the doctor examining me said "you're still pregnant!" Say what? I guess it was twins and only one died. The other was born on7/4/86!
Was a pregnant woman were greg wife, was being pregnant

@@toddkastner3768 I have always thought that.
Yep..
Yaaaassss!!! Well said, Sir.
This is simply a track of pure beauty. In 1975, when I was eleven years old I announced to my Mum and Dad, sadly no longer with me, that this would always be my favourite Christmas song. And for once in my life, I was right. 46 years later, it still is. I don't mind admitting that the beauty of Greg's performance and the memories this evokes, never fails to bring a tear.
Thank You for sharing this with us.
Toyah Wilcox did a good version of this in the early 1980s.Track it down.Fantastic.
Mine too
Same for me Christopher only I was 15 in 1975, but totally the best Chritmas song.
Good stuff I was 13 they don’t make too many as good as this
When I was 16 years old, in 1983, I sat in my car and listened to this song and cried. I had grown up, childhood was gone, the fairytales and promises had all been broken, but I was hopeful too. Very typical of Gen X, we grew up fast and saw through the lies early on, and this song summed it all up for me.... and I still remain hopeful all these years later. Merry Christmas everyone. Sending love and joy and prayers to you and yours!
This boomer wants you to know these feelings are universal. Every generation goes through them. We are so much more alike than different, never let the divisions of age, ethnicity, gender, nationality, or any other "difference" keep us from working together to right the wrongs and make our world a better place. There ARE good things happening, but you'd never know it when the media makes more money from doomscrolling. Blessed be!
... your post just made me cry

My dad passed away nearly 3 months ago. This was his favourite Christmas song. Miss you Dad merry Christmas

So sorry Katy for the loss of your dear dad. I hope you can have a good Christmas 💙x
It's true what they say time is a healer.Sympathy for your loss
Merry heavenly Christmas ⛄ Mr Field ❤
One of the most under-rated Christmas tunes out there. This is such a Masterpiece from the late Greg Lake.
@pandadarts180 You did actually listen to the lyrics, didn't you? It's not a traditional Christmas song by any means. It's melody and arrangement is a Trojan Horse that pulls the mask off Christmas and its phony trappings.
Jingle Bell Rock (The male version) is more underrated than this
Ahree
For sure
RIP Greg Lake. 🌲
In my humble opinion this is the greatest Christmas song ever written. It stands head and shoulders above all else. I'm a huge ELP fan and was lucky enough to see them live a couple of times. His voice was as good live as the recorded version. RIP Greg Lake, you had the voice of an angel.
One thing to note, though, is that it was built in the shoulders of a giant. It took the main theme from “Troika” by Prokofiev
Dont be humble........this is the best ever.....nothing comes close.
The one Christmas song you can listen to any day of the year and enjoy. Beautiful.
You are absolutely correct. When this comes on in my shuffle in May, it stays on.
Yes I agree first I've heard an I love it sad the singer has passed.😅
I play this on my guitar, I play it all year round, at least twice a week, it just sounds so good on an acoustic guitar, it's a song about peace at the end of the day. That's my excuse anyway ❤
Yes, this great in the desert with beduins and camels 😊😊😊🎄🇩🇪🎉

My heartfelt condolences to you, friend. May your dad Rest In Peace. I wish you and your loved ones comfort, consolation and strength to attain healing. The line "All anguish, pain and sadness.Leave your heart and let your road be clear" gets me every time. Isn't that what is really important in life? No how many presents you may get at Christmas, not material things. Having a life with less stress and more happiness is everything. Still the best Christmas song and a memory of childhood Christmases from the 70's and 80's.
Just turned 13 when this made the charts, watched it on top of the pops, takes me back to a time when all my family were alive and Christmas felt like Christmas.

I was at a Christmas concert once long ago and a middle school girl who looked very mousy and introverted who soloed this song with the choir backing up the chorus parts and she sang like an angel and she nailed it big time. This is insane - pure genius. First of all, just to have conceived a song like this, then to go out and execute it so brilliantly.
He didn’t purely conceive it. Prokofiev wrote the main catch “Troika”. Though he sampled it well, I’ll give him that.
When this song first came out my little two years old niece was in hospital she had leukemia this was in the charts and it summed up what I thought about Christmas at that time. that was in the 1970's and that little girl is still with us. Brilliant, brilliant song. Doesn’t get the credit it deserves.
But we get the Christmas we deserve
Vincent haha - yes we certainly do.
Ask the average person about this song, the answer will be "Never heard"
Sad but true
Agree greatly underestimated, and a great song of our time 🌲☃️🌲☃️
One of the best songs ever. This guy talked about how the world REALLY is. My Christmases.....from the beginning. I'm now 57..
Same age. And sadly so little changes every year
This man had a voice like no other. RIP Greg your music carries us
best christmas ever
Yes a voice like No Other. We miss ya, Greg.
His talent was never Really recognized, he was really great all alone. Great song writer too !
This is THE song of the season this year! "Hallelujah Noel, Be it Heaven or Hell, the Christmas we get we deserve." Couldn't be more true of a statement.
We'll, Nick. We must not deserve much because most of us are getting royally fuct.
Feel blessed Nick! Blessings from Germany 🙋♀️
An abuse victim may be beaten into agreeing with you..
@@asnieres32 of course we don't deserve it.. human rats spreading this vial disease.
Amen!!
This is my favourite Christmas song of all time❤❤❤
Using Prokofiev's Troika from Lieutenant Kije, brilliant Xmas song my favourite too
And what kept it off Xmas No 1?
Bloody Bohemian Rhapsody. 😂
The verry best Song of Greg Lake.......
This has to be the best Christmas song ever takes me right back to the 70s when everything was so great ,simple and just brilliant lost alot of friends and family along the way r.i.p this song really reflects the good old past days 👍
There wasn't a damn thing great about the 70s let's be honest. What good actually came from it?
@@SGobuck It was made bearable by close loving family and friends. What OP was referring to.
Yes when I said simple and brilliant I was referring to simple being so innocent no responsibility. and brilliant I meant missing friends and family bits of memories that comes flooding back has I said good old days 👍
@@SGobuck The music, the lifelong friendships I formed, a simpler time where a person could retire from a company with a pension. People cared about other people (yes even the elderly).
Amen brother, I grew up in the 70's and I told my family that this will always be my favorite..it captures the entire season on every level...perfection from a musical genius, R.I. P Good sir
Very haunting beautiful song ❤️
This is undeniably the best Christmas song written. Greg Lake’s angelic voice takes you to that Christmas place in your heart. Every time I hear it it brings me to tears… RIP Greg Lake🎄🌟✨💫✨✨✨✨
4 years ago today he passed away. The best Christmas song but it doesn't get the airplay it deserves!. RIP Greg
His life was about his music.
He put his soul into the music he played & sang. In 1975 I was a junior in high school & Greg was writing & singing songs & playing guitar. How amazing was he? Love Greg Lake. I still love his voice & his talent. He is missed.
What a baby face he had when much younger, he looked really good in his white suits & pants.
Such a cute guy!!!!
The video where he's chewing gum & playing his guitar & singing knocks me out. So young in that video. I cry alot listening to his music & watching CZcams vids. 💔🙏
agree whole heartedly loved all of his works being a "dinosaur" from the 70,s bless you,
lol
I was born just a too little to late to enjoy the heart of the 60's-70's music movement, so I am so happy these videos are available online. My heart aches that I was too young to experience all of the creative geniuses live, in concert. Boomers are the luckiest generation ever.
Greg Lake wrote "Lucky Man" when he was 12. I wish I could have met this humble genius. He was magical.
There is no comparison with this song. Sums up all my childhood nostalgia.
Still listening in March of 2023!🤗
One of the best Christmas songs ever wrote and sang. Who else other than Greg Lake to perform this classic song. RIP Greg Lake.
The best christmas song by a country mile! Just stunning! Perfection. ❤
In a nutshell
@@garyoconnor3509 Held off the number one spot by Bohemian Rhapsody.
Thank you Greg for this wonderful song. You are missed deeply.
As a child of the 70s, I always loved this song - listening to this now, at 53 in 2023, the words truly hit me ❤
In my eyes should have been a number 1,my favourite Xmas song of all time
Xmas has Christ in it!
@@ronpritchard6720 sorry
its not Christmas until you hear this song. Sublime musical arrangement and lyrics - deep and meaningful. Never get bored with it.....
The composition on this is amazing, every note hits just right and the inclusion of Prokofiev's Troika just makes this all the more so
Still sat listening.. minding my grandson.he seven and loves it
One of the best if not the best Xmas song and very appt considering what's going on in Gaza and Israel.12th November 2023.
Lost my Father Christmas 2013 and it still hurts so much.
Seems so many people die this time of year.
Love is love
There is only one christmas song which makes me cry every single time I hear it. This is the one. Hauntingly beautiful and today as actual as ever.
Yep me too.
Same here!!! It's truly my favorite too!!! ❤
One of the most honest Christmas songs out there. IMO. Not judgemental and also wishing you a merry Christmas....but also reminding us it is different in the eyes it reflects in. Children see Christmas thru younger hopeful eyes, adults thru different lenses, children of war and soldiers of war yet another view.
One of my favorite.
