The ministry of road transport and highways has constructed 13,394 km of highways in fiscal year 2020-21. Gadkari said that the pace of highways construction in the country has touched a record 37 km per day in financial year 2020-21.
In February 2021, Patel Infrastructure Limited, an contractor of National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) created a world record by laying the highest quantity of concrete on a four-lane highway in 24 hours. The record was set for laying of Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) for a four-lane highway of 2,580 meters length within 24 hours. Starting at 8 am on 1 February, 2021, they finished the job, totalling 2,580 meters X 4 lanes i.e. approximately 10.32 lane kilometres by 8 am next morning. With a width of 18.75 meters, as much an area as 48,711 square meters of concrete was laid for the expressway in 24 hours. The highest quantity of concrete laid in 24 hours - 14,613 cubic meter was achieved. It was part of the greenfield Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai 8-lane Expressway project.
Another NHAI contractor completed single lane of the four-lane stretch of 25.54 km being developed between Solapur-Vijapur (NH 52) in 18 hours. Hyderabad-based construction company IJM India carried out the construction work
A National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) contractor has created a world record on Monday (01 February) for laying Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) for a four-lane highway of 2,580 meters length within 24 hours. The record is part of the greenfield Delhi-Vadodara-Mumbai 8-lane Expressway project, and was carried out by the world’s largest fully automatic ultra-modern concrete paver machine. Starting at 8 o'clock in the morning on 1st February 2021, they finished the job of laying approximately 10.32 thousand lane meters by 8 am next day. With a width of 18.75 meters, as much an area as 48,711 square meters of concrete was laid for the expressway in 24 hours. The feat by Patel Infrastructure Limited has been recognized by both the India Book of Records, and the Golden Book of World Records. With contractors laying good quality concrete for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) at record speeds, the Road Ministry hopes to cross its construction target of 11,000 km by March 31. The feat comes in the backdrop of the Ministry having constructed 8,169 km of National Highways (NHs) from April 2020 to 15 January 2021 in the current financial year 2020-21, i.e. with a speed of about 28.16 km per day. The Ministry is hopeful that with such pace it should be able to cross the construction target of 11,000 km by 31 March. The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway at nearly 1,320 km will be India’s longest expressway. It reduces travel time between Delhi and Mumbai from 24 hours to 13 hours. The new highway is being built at an estimated cost of Rs one lakh crore. The highway will start near Gurugram at Sohna and terminate at Mumbai. The expressway will cut the distance between the national and financial capital of India by 280 km.
