  • Marking St. Peter and Paul’s Day - Custom/Folklore from Point Lance, Newfoundland
As today (29th of June) is the Feast of St. Peter and Paul, here is Willie Careen chatting to me in Point Lance, Newfoundland back in 2019. The community in Point Lance are all of Irish background (South Tipperary, Wexford and Waterford) and in the chat, Willie explains to me how they would mark this date at a social gathering on high ground called The Tilts.
On the east coast of Wexford, there was also a tradition of social gathering on high ground and a bonfire lit but not sure if they are related or not. Willie also tells me that the old people would always say "that if there were no fish in the Summer, Peter and Paul would bring them” ie they will come after the 29th of June. Have a listen.
