      @@Awol991 The Coast Guard (FEDERAL) number on the boats is FREE registration. And yes, you can find the people. WE had one guy we rowed out to pump out his boat: he was in hospital in Winnipeg. However, what boat owners CAN AND SHOULD do is post a notice of contact on the boat in an area people can fine it, or "co-op" for a watch out with other boats in the vicinity.

      not all boats need to be registered, anything with a 10 hp or 7.5 kw engine and above needs to be registered. if those boats only have 9.9 hp outboards and not insured or registered they're fine but they have overstayed they're welcome in False Creek (there's a time limit). i think they can move out in front of English Bay and couldn't be bothered by the authorities but its totally exposed to the rough weather out there. they need to create more live aboard marinas in Vancouver/lower mainland area instead of pushing hard to ban the ones that are left

  • @kentdurham2716
    @kentdurham2716 Před rokem +2

    Boats are one of those things that needs a lot of maintenance even when new. Servicing and maintenance are a very real need.
    A marine environment is hard on boats that set in the water, even in a marina. The best thing that could happen is running a boat every day, like an automobile. Most owners boat less than 50 hours a year, even less for the ones that just putt out into the sound and have a meal and a few beers. Add up the decay and potential freezing damage and repairs add up quickly.
    A boat can be new and a derelict. Boat repairs can be crippling to your bank account and your mental state due to the owners not knowing how to correctly maintain even a small craft.
    If the boat is moored, it adds unique issues such as corrosion and electrolysis. If you are ever offered a free boat you will usually spend well beyond the boat value on your first trip to the marine mechanic. With some shops approaching $100 per hour, it’s no wonder these boats are floating derelicts. Marinas and boat yards are full of boats that will never take another trip due to expensive damage and the passage of time. Perhaps the question has yet to be asked; what to do when you regret (have buyers remorse)and a poor understanding of boat systems? Individuals can no longer afford repairs. There isn’t really a boat junk yard that tows and crushes your boat for scrap recycling of pleasure boats. A real milestone around your neck. I would liken it to an expensive European car where maintenance costs top $3000 a year. It’s a high earners game or a fully trained marine mechanic with access to cheap parts. Your opinion may vary.

    As a boat owner I hate the idea of another cost, a cost that would be carried by all responsible boat owners. However the US solution is to have boats licensed, the same way cars are licensed. No license means the state can impound the abandoned vehicle. More importantly it identifies the owner, and provides a pool of funds that are then used to deal with end of life boats. Owners of old boats would be less likely to simply walk away if they knew they would be on the hook for salvage. At some point boats need to be responsibly hauled out, partially recycled, and sent to the landfill.

    No one has the balls to deal with it. I personally know of one individual working in Victoria who has a boat anchored in Ganges harbor. Pumps his head directly into the harbor and doesn't care about the rules. If they sink, they risk fuel leaks also an obstruction to other boaters.

  • @tonyk501
    @tonyk501 Před rokem +1

    Clearly, there is not enough deterrent presently built into the legal system to inhibit boat owners from engaging in this kind of "squatting".
    Unless the owners of these boats face criminal charges with mandatory prison sentences, and/or these boats are forcibly seized/confiscated, towed away, and sold for scrap, this kind of nonsense will only continue with impunity.
    This is not a whole lot different from how cars are treated.
    If you leave your car parked long enough in someone else's parking lot and/on the shoulder at the side of the highway, it gets towed and impounded, sooner or later.
    Next.

  • @knowledgeandmultiskilled

    If boat owners are abandoning their boats, and nothing bad happened in the area that would misplace any of the boats then boats that are removed could be given to people who would want a boat.
    Normally people would moor a boat at a marina, or on their own property on water.
    "Mooring Your Boat"
    "Mooring refers to lassoing, tethering, tying, or otherwise securing your boat to a fixed object, such as a mooring buoy, rather than dropping an anchor to secure your vessel anywhere you fancy. You can moor your boat to a mooring buoy, dock, quay, wharf, jetty, or pier."
    In my opinion, it doesn't look like the boats are moored. The boats could either be abandoned, or misplaced.
