Captain America is one of the most iconic characters in all of popular fiction, and the long-time flag bearer for Marvel Comics ever since his creation in 1941. Steve Rogers has, for almost 80 years, stood as the longest-serving hero in the Marvel universe (in terms of publication), carrying the company through the Golden Age of Comics, before returning to help usher in Marvel’s resurgence in the 1960’s, to his modern adventures and popular adaptation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Which… makes it all the more strange that at one point in the character’s history, Steve Rogers almost found himself on a new battlefield, fighting strange new foes in the form of the DC Universe. I’m aware of how crazy and far-fetched that sounds, but during Marvel’s darkest moments, the possibility of Captain America being sold away to their biggest competitors was actually real, and in this video, we’re going to discuss the factors that led up to this deal ever being put on the table, and how its refusal by Marvel boss Martin Goodman, may have saved the company altogether.

#CaptainAmerica #Marvel #DCComics - Zábava
See, this incident and other similar situations are exactly why I regard the Marvel/DC rivalry as pointless. Both companies have benefited from the other's contributions to the medium. Both companies have nearly gone under and seen themselves purchased by the other. Both companies have shared some of the greatest talent in the industry. Both companies need each other.
I feel like people are more harsh on Marvel's existence for merely coming after DC, which is frustrating. Like you said, both companies wouldn't exist as they are today without the other. It's not about who came first or did what first.
When I was a kid, I often vaguely thought of Captain America as a DC hero and was repeatedly surprised when I was reminded that he was actually from Marvel. I was probably picking up on his Golden Age Boy Scout qualities, which seemed more like a DC thing than the cheeky 1960s-era heroes I was used to seeing from Marvel. After all, he was a pre-Marvel Age character, from before Marvel was Marvel.

@@pookypoo1169 you shut up. Don’t even know why you’re mad.
If DC did in fact buy the three characters from Atlas, I think I would have done the man out out time story for Cap, with him working in the 1940s only to be discovered by Superman outside the Fortress Of Solitude. Namor could be an Aquaman side character or villain, them both being from Atlantis and all. I would have also waited off till the 1960s , and introduced the Human Torch as part of the Doom Patrol, as he is a weird sort of character with a great design. I’m happy where the characters ended up, but it’s interesting to think what would of happened
I feel as if Captain America was brought by DC Comics the direction of the character could go in a similar path in comparison to Batman or The Flash with their legacy characters.
I could see Steve being a member of the JSA working alongside those heroes during World War II or in a time period before the likes of Batman and Superman. Eventually, Steve would retire with Bucky taking up the mantle of Captain America for a new generation. The Bucky Captain America could be a part of the JLA.
That’s my take on it and would be interested in other people’s takes as well. Also the video was great as usual Owen.
That's a great pitch, but back in the 50s JSA didn't exist. So, it is more likely they would put him in a parallel earth as they did with Fawcett, Quality and Charlton characters, up until crisis in 1985 at least. After that, I can see what you suggested happening.
Avash Ihteyaz I can see that after Crisis on Infinite Earths, the rest of those events would play out. I think Namor and the original Human Torch’s origins would be kept in tact but the time frame could be shifted around a bit. I can probably see characters such as Bucky and Toro being a part of the original Teen Titans line-up if Cap was put in the JLA instead of the JSA. There’s a lot of cool ideas with Cap’s inclusion in the DCU.
@@nickcunningham758 another interesting thing would be if DC bought Namor in 57, I doubt Aquaman would get the new origin in 59, which was basically a copy of Namor origin. That would shift the whole balance as that might have made Aquaman a forgotten or discarded character, as before the 60s, he was a very much unknown quantity, and DC would probably let Aquaman slide in favor of better known Namor.
Out of all Marvel's top characters, I think Captain America is the most like a DC character, anyway. So, he'd actually fit in quite well.
If captain America wpuld would would belong to DC, they would ruin him because they oy care for batman. So, captain America would not shine enough in DC.
This makes you wonder what could have been.
@King Peppy The Watchers have to honor that sacred oath.
Captain America is my favorite super hero, and NO IT DOESN'T.
@@jeromehoyle4945 yes!!
Captain America would've been completely overshadowed in the DC Universe. Personally, I'm very glad that this sale didn't happen because there have been some really good Cap stories over the years, and Chris Evans Cap is the soul of the MCU.
I could honestly see him with DC and fit quite seamlessly, but he would be such a "D" list character in the DCU. Overshadowed miles by Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash , Green Lantern etc
@@7142320 exactly. In marvel he’s become an A-lister.
Ironic considering that Cap basically overshadowed everybody in the JLA/Avengers crossover.
Very interesting situation that I never knew of.
I think that those characters in DC's hands could have gotten the same treatment that characters from the Quality and Charlton lines got. Cap would have gone from being the greatest Avenger to being some guy that the writers like using every 20 years.
Captain America always felt more like a DC character to me, honestly. It's actually surprising he ended up at Timely to begin with, given that almost all the other Simon and KIrby features were for DC (they published probably 75% of all Kirby's pre-Silver Age work). S & K became legit stars prior to going to war, and their Boy Commandos were the third-best-selling feature in all of comics behind only Superman and Captain Marvel. Cap would've fit right in.
Captain America vs Citizen Steel confirmed
Great video once again, Owen! Thanks for having me on to voice GOD HIMSELF, Jack Kirby.
I'm sure there's no one else he'd rather have voice him.
@@OwenLikesComics what is your thoughts on Idris Elba not playing deadshot
Well according to Variety, Idris might actually be playing a different character after all. Either way, I'm excited - he's a great actor.
@@OwenLikesComics do you think king shark or I hope they put in suicide squad fire fly or peace maker
@@hunteriggy2762 one of those would be great
It would've been the Batman & Captain America team ups. Brave and the Bold most likely. They would've killed him off to show DC's superiority and brought him back in Green Lantern and Captain America . Instead of Green Lantern and Green Arrow titles. Bucky would've been addicted to smack and that whole award winning arch would've been still stellar and memorable!
I'll tell you what would have happened. The characters would have been forgotten and possibly used in some rebuttal of Watchmen by Grant Morrison or they join the JSA or their own team or something like that.
Original Timely/Atlas Trinity:
Sub-Mariner (Namor McKenzie)
Human Torch (Jim Hammond)
Captain America (Steve Rogers)
Modern Marvel "Official" Trinity:
Captain America (Steve Rogers)
Thor Odinson
Iron Man (Tony Stark)
The "Believed" Marvel Trinity:
Wolverine (James "Logan" Howlet)
Hulk (Bruce Banner)
Spider-Man (Peter Parker)
Captain America is a very important character to Marvel.
Isn't it possible that, with the income from the sale of the three pre-War characters, that Timely/Marvel would have had the finances to continue publishing their own comics and Stan STILL would have created the Fantastic Four in 1961, reinvigorating the company as it happened in our timeline? Hulk, Daredevil, X-men, Thor, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Nick Fury, Ant-man, Silver Surfer, and Spider-man still would have been created . . . just in a world without Captain America.
Oh, and I suppose Johnny Storm's character name would have been different, and Kirby probably would have designed him to look unique to the Hammond Torch.
Captain America and Star Girl
Oh, I'm sure there's already plenty of explicit fan art of those two together ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I always look forward to your content Owen. I’ve been reading comics for 30+ years and you seem to bring a refreshment to old knowledge that brings my youthful desire to devour the wonderful smorgasbord that comics are.
This comment has made my day, honestly. Thanks so much, David, I appreciate that a lot!
This was super informative. Well done, bruh.
Thank you so much, man. I really appreciate it!
Captain America Weird Tales seems weird
Well im a huge DC fan, i prefer DC over Marvel any day but HOTDAMN Chris fits Captain America role perfectly, His chin, physic, face and acting truly represent Steve Rogers, good job Marvel.
Awesome video as always, Owen! Although I would have loved to see a DC-owned Captain America, I am more than satisfied to see where Cap is in our timeline
Great video man. These history videos are always very helpful.
If I were to speculate, Marvel (at least as we know it) would not exist. One interesting alternate history scenario is that Stan Lee still worked on Atlas' anthology titles after Goodman sold Cap and the other superheroes to DC until he quits in 1961. Perhaps struggling to find work elsewhere, Stan returns to comics by taking up a job at Archie Comics who are interested in reviving the old MLJ heroes (The Shield, Comet, Black Hood etc.) after the runaway success of Justice League of America. They basically give him a carte blanche and he reinvents the MLJ superheroes into something akin to our timeline's Marvel. For example, the Web is re-envisioned as a character akin to Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Cap and the Atlas heroes remain unused until a future JLA/JSA crossover where they replace the Quality heroes on Earth-X.
A very real possibility. Stan always wanted to write the great American novel. He always saw himself as a novelist first. He was about to quit comics in 61 and try his luck as a novelist. Under this scenario , the likelihood of Stan returning to comics in some capacity after a few years struggling as a novelist would be pretty high. My pick would be Charlton Comics. Don't forget Ditko worked for Charlton throughout his career and went there full time in the late 60s. I can easily imagine Stan, Ditko and Kirby creating the marvel characters at Charlton instead. Its interesting to speculate.
I sorta wonder if you are not discounting how affect Jack Kirby had on the revitalization of Marvel's SuperHeroes. The characters at the forefront were mostly orginal characters like the three orginal Fantastic Four characters (the recycled Human Torch nane being the oddmam out). There is a lot of Kirby's Challengers of the Unknown in the FF and Kirby and Lee disagreed about was originator of the series. Captain America actually doesn't return to the comics until Avengers issue 4.
I love it. The Shield, protector of Riverdale, along with Comet and the Web, are secretly Archie Andrews, Jughead Jones, and Betty Cooper during the day, but masked heroes when school let's out. They fight the Penguin, who is secretly Mr. Weatherbee.
There's a timeline out there in the multiverse where that actually happened. Where they pulled another Captain Marvel/SHAZAM style story with them.
This was really interesting never even knew about this, It's kinda cool to think about how this might have gone if it actually happened in some alternative universe.
Wit another video of this quality, the question remains.... why don’t you have more subs, so many are missing out ona great channel
Haha thank you, genuinely I appreciate the kind words!
DC had been a distributor to Marvel back in wee early days of the 60s (i think) they had to each sell a certain amount of comics a month and marvel couldn't release any book they wanted because they got capsized by DC till a unknown date
Whoa, I didn't know about this. Fascinating stuff, Owen!
Great video 🙌🏾
I wanna hear more about Marvel and their comeback, i dont care how long the video is!! You make it fun to listen to!
New sub...love your videos keep it up...
I would like to know what would have been like if Caption was brought by DC
Now do a story how Marvel almost end up being the publisher of DC's characters in the 80's during Jim Shooter's reign.
Would be hard to view since Capt is just such a major player in Marvel. He’s Marvel’s Superhero community’s leader. In a sense he’s seen as Marvel’s Superman. If DC did buy him, he would just be a second stringer unlike how the MCU made Capt a major hero now. I doubt DC would think to make movies about Capt if they did buy him. At least not right away compared to some of their bigger IPs. They still need a way to adapt Green Lantern
Dear god that would've been horrible.
EC Comics' horror, scifi and war books were approximately 852% better than anything Marvel or DC had put out at that time
fascinating, I had no idea about this! thank goodness for Mr. Goodman staying fast and resolute! imagine Cap and Namor on the Justice League! crazy!
I think that if DC would've acquired just those titles it would've been a great move. At that time Marvel didn't have any other worthwhile titles. If Marvel were to have bought DC it would've went the way of Titan Sports. How Vince McMahon totally ruined professional wrestling world wide. That's a very scary thought!
I've read the crossover story of Cap and Batman released in the late 1980s which showed them stopping a plan headed up by Red Skull and Joker during World War 2. The story ends with an epliloge scene where Dick Grayson is Batman and Bruce's son has become Robin and they Find Cap frozen in Ice and revive him, and he awakens in a new high-tech Bat-cave! I'm guessing this is where the inspiration for that ending came from. At the very least I do love the idea of Captain America and Batman fighting side by side and wouldn't mind more stories where they work together. I also like the Crossover ship of Captain America and Wonder Woman
If I could direct a JLA trilogy that would look like this:
Justice League
The assembling of the league against the Legion of Doom. Characters: Superman, Batman, WW, Flash, Lantern, Manhunter and Aquaman VS. Luthor, Joker, Cheetah, Captain Cold, Sinestro, the twin of Manhunter, and Black Manta. Lex Luthor of course, would have a war suit. Aquaman's hand gets chopped off. Batman's suit maybe would be total black with grey logo.
Justice League: Tower of Babel
Mostly based on the comics. Cyborg would join the League. Aquaman would look like in the comics except his hair would be shorter, like Obi wan's in Revenge of the Sith. In the final Batman would return to the batcave.
Justice League: Crisis
The final. The beginning would be like the 2017 Justice League movie except Darkseid would do the massacre. Shazam joins the League. Aquaman would have a trident again. SPOILER: Apokalips would be attacked by another universe's Justice League. Darkseid becomes paranoid and believes that a multi-verse war is coming. He knows that their universe is weak, and wants to enhance it by the Anti-life equation. So that he goes to Earth to gather some Mother Boxes at first (battery things to load the Equation) then goes to the Mount of Olympus, becuase there's the Equation and tries to solve it. The League arrives and starts an half an hour CGI fight with Darkseid and his army. Later Batman realizes that they cannot defeat him so he solves the Equation and makes Darkseid to destroy himself. The other villain would be Kalibak who would get killed by Superman.
Maybe there would be a sequel.
I feel as though Cap would be a massively side lined character if DC bought him
Love the think what the world be like if this happened type videos ~B#
I reckon if Cap became a DC character then his archnemesis would be Vandal Savage instead of The Red Skull
Quick, to the fanficmobile!
It's not surprising that Martin Goodman considered selling Captain America, anything for a buck, but it *is* surprising that he turned the offer down. Maybe he thought DC wasn't offering enough money.
I wish I could remember where I heard it, but I think Goodman turned down the offer because Sub-Mariner was being considered for a possible live action TV series at the time.
Another story I've read on this matter, was that Goodman made the offer to dc.And they turned him down.Whatever the case, It worked out fine for marvel.
Trinston was here
.
Didn’t WB almost made a Captain America movie? I thought this video would touch on that.
Talk about a butterfly affect.... if this had happened Marvel as a whole would have never really gotten going changing DC immensely I'm sure and doing who knows what to popular culture today. Marvel is such an important piece of film and many other things with others trying to copy it how different would things be now if it had never happened....
In the mid 1980s Marvel was going to publish all DC Characters according to the Editor In Chief Jim Shooter. Reallly quite fascinating. jimshooter.com/2011/08/superman-first-marvel-issue.html/
First all it was Warner bros brought film rights
Who is Goodman?
He was the owner of marvel up to 1968, and still was publisher up to mid 1972.
I figured
Interesting
Meanwhile, the way things are going at the moment it looks like Marvel might be able to buy Superman instead!
hello
In the alternate universe where The Human Torch and Toro, Cap and Bucky, and Subby are sold to the Distinguished Competition, Marvel goes bankrupt. Stan Lee and Martin Goodman, together with Jack Kirby and Bill Everett, take up new careers in space exploration. On one trip they take, hoping to beat the commies to the moon, their ship is bombarded by cosmic radiation, forcing them to crash land back on Earth. They find themselves changed by the trip. Stan can now stretch, Martin is now invisible, Bill has fire powers, and Jack is even more grotesque than before. They vow to help mankind. But, since D.C. had bought the rights to Jim Hammond, Bill Everett is sued. Having no money to hire a lawyer to defend himself, Bill turns to a blind lawyer named Matt that works in Hell's Kitchen.
Meanwhile, Steve Ditko is bitten by a radioactive spider.
Why do dc fans not appreciate MARVELS Journey :(
I’m glad he stayed with Marvel because DC would be too dark for him.
Captain Batmerica
You kept saying "Marvel" when I don't think there was a Marvel. They were Atlas or Timely, until Fantastic Four.
If DC had bought the Human Torch, what would Johnny Storm have called himself? Fire Man? Maybe Nova. But that would have meant Nova couldn't have been Nova.
Imagine mcu cap and buckys story was in the new 52 series and when something similar like civil war in dc and cap lied to batman by not telling him that bucky killed his parents as the winter soldier
Glad DC didn't buy Captain America and other related characters the would have screwed them up
