  • Well, after several weeks of tyrying to get this done, we finally got started about 6 am on Saturday 7th of November. This was shot at the very beginning, you can see a small pile of bagasse and an old pile from two years ago ! After about 6 hours, the splines in the 69 Ford rearend gave out. Now I guess we'll be building a new setup with a truck rearend. I'd still like to gear drive it !

Well, personally I wouldn't recommend setting up one this way. It's slow and very dangerous. That chain on top broke so many times and several of us had some dandy bruises. Search my videos for the horizontal mill, that's the setup everyone should have. I have offered it for sale but it's a big price no one likes. I'll be getting it running again in the next few months since I just found out my uncle planted cane against my wishes. I'll try to make a new video when we do it.
As for this old setup, 6.5 hp engine, 125 to 1 gear box to the Ford rear end with the spider gears welded, the top chain and sprockets are off a manure spreader, you need something better than these. There is enormous pressure when squeezing cane, and you how slow we were going. Thanks for your interest.

Just curious, and I know you have upgraded to a horizontal mill, but where were the splines that gave out? Splines on the axle shaft? Splines on the pinion shaft?

Don't know which ones stripped, just in the axle differential.
