Its the characters that bothers most. Derek is a dense jock and Odette's sudden change of opinion on him didn't seem realistic.
Personally, my favorite part of the movie is the beginning/opening. Like the song and them growing up had so much personality. After that, I just usually stop watching haha. If there was few indications of them both having romantic feelings for one another while growing up then I would’ve enjoyed the film much more. I do appreciate the awareness in certain parts of the movie.
Have to say though Odette’s character design is gorgeous and the soft movements in the animation is satisfying to watch!

I feel the same way. I grew up with this series.
I always put it down to, Derek KNOWS he loves her and for more than just her beauty, but he didn't know how to say it. She knows he sees more than her beauty, but knowing isn't enough. She needs him to get past his immaturity and tell her. She needs to hear it. So yes, she knows she loves him and he her, and when she misses him as a swan, it seems less important then when she just wants to see him.
*this movie may not clash with Disney productions, but it teaches a valuable lesson: love the character and personality of the person, beauty is the least.*
Yes, I always like the fact the main characters didn't fall in love directly like in Disney movies and the guy has to prove his love

I like that in this movie they actually treat their relationship in a more realistic way, the prince and the princess, they dont get along as kids, they dont want to be forced into marriage, then when they grow up and get a different mindset, they start feeling different about each other, Odette is the more mature one while Derek is still like a big child, doesnt have that mature feeling of love, only sees her beauty which makes him fall for her, which is pretty realistic and it also happens a lot in these animated movies but they never say it, even though its obvious that the pair ends up together because they both like the way the other one looks :) deep down though they still have a special bond which they formed throughout their lives :) here they focus on the two growing into their relationship and love :) Odette is honestly my favorite of these princesses, she feels real, she is an actual princess as well, and is pretty likable :D plus the visual whenever she transforms is great :)

This is based on the story told in the ballet "Swan Lake", with music by Tchaikovsky. The ballet is loosely based a few fairy tales kind of knitted together.
In the ballet, we start with the prince, Siegfried, on his birthday, and the day before a ball where he'll choose a bride. He takes his brand new cross bow into the forest, where he discovers Odette, who turns from swan to woman, and tells him the story of how she was cursed: the magician Rothbart tried to force her to marry him, and when that failed, turned her (and her company of swan maidens) into a swan by day, woman by night. Only if a man swears faithful and unbroken love to her, can she be cured. Siegfried proposes she come to the ball tomorrow night and he'll proclaim his love before witnesses. Rothbart overhears and turns his daughter, Odile, into a replica of Odette. Siegfried is fooled and swears love to Odile, which forces Odette's curse to be permanent. From here there are several different endings:
1. Siegfried faces down Rothbart, kills him and breaks the spell.
2. Odette kills herself out of despair. Siegfried either kills himself with her, and this sign of true love breaks the spell for the swan maidens.
3. Rothbart takes control of Odette and kills Siegfried, usually by drowning.
4. Odette kills herself, the two men live, or sometimes Rothbart is brought to death by this.
And there are a couple of other variations.
The music for "Swan Lake" is absolutely glorious, and a lot of it is pretty well known. It's long, so you need time, and if you're not used to classical music, be prepared that you need to be patient and attentive, but it's worth it. The ballroom scene is distinguished by the set of dances (called a Pas de Deux) between Odile and Siegfried, featuring a spectacular series of turns (fouettés) done by the dancer playing Odile (and Odette: it's a dual role for the dancer, and a very contrasting one: Odette soft and gentle and sad; Odile resplendent and mocking Odette's earlier moves).

The seated couple are the queen, Siegfried's mother, and the disguised Rothbart. That last second is Odile triumphing that her work has been successful.
This was such a pleasant surprise! I haven’t seen this movie since I was 5 years old. Definitely underrated & one of my favorite films growing up along with The Last Unicorn.

The Last Unicorn reigns supreme as one of the best animated fantasy films imo. It's one of those rare movies where it means even more as an adult than it did as a child. I would LOVE to see Nick (or anyone else, honestly!) react to it. ☺️
@@LoveKillFear777 I just searched up that The Last Unicorn is getting a Live-Action Remake. I don’t know what film company is owning it. It might be a company I don’t know of and it seems like the film wasn’t that popular. In fact, I don’t remember at all of how I got to know about it nor how I ended up getting the DVD. Probably got it at a Walmart years ago. I had it since elementary school.
I remember having a stuffed unicorn with me every time I watched The Last Unicorn, it was so gorgeous! :)

There was just something about the strong emotions and sentimentality of this one that *really* sucked me in as a kid. Definitely a movie that I begged my mom to rent from the local video store again and again. 😁
Honestly even to this day, I genuinely like Derek and Odette's origin story that we see from children to teens to adults. The banter and rivalry, turned eventual affection is great -- I only wish grown up Odette kept more of her spunk. And I still enjoy the side characters, especially Speed. I just love his sweetness and deadpan humor!
At the very least, the one perfect takeaway is the immortal quote: *"You should write a book: How To Offend Women in Five Syllables or Less"* 😂

When I tell you i screamed when I saw this is mean I SCREAMED. Swan Princess was one of those princess movies I was obsessed with as a super young child basically only coming third behind shrek (bc I used to recreate the exploding bird scene over and over for some reason) and barbie and the diamond castle (bc I was convinced the 2 girls were lesbians)
I audibly gasped. I was not expecting to see it.
The Swan Princess was produced by a former Disney animator and assistant director named Richard Rich, who worked on films like Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh, The Fox and the Hound, and more. So, you can see why this movie seems very Disney-like.

It's funny because in France some characters are voiced by people who also voiced Disney characters :
Donald Reignoux voiced young Derek and is also the french voice of Kristoff in " Frozen " and Sora in the games Kingdom Hearts.
Roger Carel voiced the " lieutenant " bird and the narrator but is also know as the boss of the french Disney voice act. He also revoiced in Kingdom Hearts the Disney characters he voiced in the movies
Out of all the princesses on parade, I had a huge crush on Brunhilde as a kid.
Man, this and “trumpet and the Swan”, “Thumbelina”, and “the Indian in the cupboard” are like my underrated childhood movies right here!
*Here in Brazil, this film and its trilogy were on Saturday mornings for many of us, as it was replayed almost every Saturday on a station here. When it wasn't The Swan Princess, it was The Land Before Time movies*

Omg! One of my all time favorites as a kid. I LOVED this movie. Watched it all the time.
The thing is about The Swan Princess with its Disney vibes is because the guy who directed this film is Richard Rich who used to work for Disney and worked in a different studio in Coppell, Texas known Nest Family.
This is an animated that I like to rewatch from time to time! It’s interesting to know that The Swan Princess competed against The Lion King back in 1994 and failed at the box office. However, this film started getting recognition on home media.
A movie I think you’ll like is Quest for Camelot. It has one of my favorite couples in animation, they remind me of Rapunzel and Flynn from Tangled in a way and the songs are great. I highly recommend checking it out to see if you’d be interested because it’s pretty underrated imo 🥰

That film was butchered by Warner Brothers from what the director wanted to do. As Warner wanted to compete with Disney so badly the director have disowned the film and the main characters designs are directly ripped off of Belle and human Beast from Beauty and the Beast.

Ok, brief history about this movie. It was made by Richard Rich who used to work at Disney and directed The Black Cauldron and The Fox and the Hound. Rich pitched a Swan Lake adaptation to Disney and it was rejected. He went on to form his own animation studio and this movie was a passion project to the point where he was phoning people and going door to door to fundraise its production and release. Disney doesn't take well to competition at all, this was especially true in the 90s. As such, Disney sabotaged this film's release by rereleasing The Lion King on its opening weekend to tank it in the box office. This succeeded and against the Swan Princess' $20-30 million dollar production budget, they made back less than $10 million through its entire theatrical run. -- The movie actually did however end up being successful in its home video releases and ended up winning the parent's choice award for best animated film that year. An important detail that was enjoyed by parents is that Derek and Odette had actually grown up together and gotten to know each other before falling in love in contrast with many popular animated movies at the time.
On a technical note I noticed you commented a bit about the animation. This movie actually doesn't incorporate CGI - instead it was the last ever theatrical release to be entirely painted by hand (I actually have a signed animation cell that I won from them after winning a fanart contest
Other notes, Odette's singing voice in this film is Liz Calloway. She also provided the singing voice for Anastasia, Jasmine in Aladdin 2 and 3, and Kiara in The Lion King 2. Her speaking voice in this film (and speaking/singing voice in the 2nd and 3rd movies) was Michelle Nicastro who unfortunately passed away from breast cancer in 2010.
This was one of my childhood’s favorite. I love Odette, she is smart and was a tomboy when little. The fact that she end things with Derek when he answer that he likes her for her beauty is totally awesome.
I loved this movie so much as a kid. I loved Disney movies but there are some great non-Disney Princess/movies too. The opening song in this is so good! And I love Lord Roger and his sarcastic wit and “lord help me” looks are great.

And I know what you mean about the other non Disney movies. Spirit, Anastasia, quest for Camelot, Sinbad and other non Disney movies deserve more. Just because they don't have the Disney brand on it doesn't mean they're bad

I grew up with The first three Swan Princess films and I love them. The first one is an underrated gem, the second and third ones are good too, but not as good as the first one.
And the CGI ones just aren’t good.
@@morganspider-manmarvelfan6110 Yep the series went downhill from the fourth film and the hill got steeper and steeper with every new CGI film until eventually the hill was at a 90- degree angle and the series came crashing down with the tenth film.
The villain song might be my favorite scene in the movie. I'm pretty sure the bit where Rothbart does the one-armed push-up is an homage to his voice actor Jack Palance, who did the same during an Oscars acceptance speech. I think the supporting characters are more entertaining than the leads. Speed for example is voiced by Stephen Wright, whose stand up comedy is a favorite of mine, and the old woman and the pageboy, I dunno why, but it made me happy that they got together at the end, lol.

Fun Fact: Disney felt like this movie was copying them so much, they took revenge by re-releasing The Lion King the exact same time as The Swan Princess. With that said, it's easy to tell which mad MORE money

I didn’t know anyone else knew about this film. We had a VHS tape of this when I was a kid and I have seen this hundreds of times. Its cheesy but it’s fun.

Edit: I made it to the end of the video and actually the story of a swan princess/swan lake/swan maiden is a very old tale because it use to be a Romanian Christmas Carol. Folk specialists guess that this carol is supposedly the main influence on why swans are considered “Christmasie”- that’s why “seven swans a swimming” is mentioned in 12 days of Christmas, that’s why there’s a swan dance/princess in the Nutcracker ballet, not to mention all the ornaments and other swan references in different Christmas materials.
So even though Disney felt like this was a copy of their style and story telling, it’s really not since this is a much older story that has been around for years. I think more than anything they were just bitter their last few movies they made like the Black Claudron didn’t do so well ever since Walt Disney himself died. So the competition really isn’t helping the situation since Disney was about to be a failed business after Walt passed. The only similarity is that this and Disney really has is how they take original stories, adapt them, and try to monetize off them.
Aladdin isn’t a Disney original- it’s part of the 1000 Arabian Nights story.
The Little Mermaid saved Disney as a company cause it brought them out of bankruptcy and helped made Disney the powerhouse it is today, but it’s based off the story Hans Christian Andersen made.
Tangled is based off Rapenzul which is a Brothers Grim story.
All of these stories and more were popularized before Disney, but Disney made them iconic and because their adaptions made such an influence, Disney patented their characters as originals so someone can recreate the Snow White movie, but it cannot resemble any way shape or form of Disney’s version of Snow White.
I get how people assume this and Anastasia are immediately Disney movies because honestly Disney for the longest time monopolized the animated princess storytelling.
I remember when I was younger this was my favourite movie, and it always made my heart ache when it ended.

I grew up watching the second one. But when I found there’s like nine or eight more movies I was like…WHHHHHHAT!!? Because I love this movie. Seeing it still continues makes me happy honestly.

I really adored this movie as a kid, as an adult, I still like it but seriously...why do they love each other? Odette at least questions why Derek loves her. She's beautiful and that's it. Even Rogers asks Derek about it and Derek can't give an actual answer.

Doing the childhood as a montage is a great idea and they held off on them showing their attraction to each other so it would have more impact but the downside is it's easy to forget the idea is the whole childhood took place in real time for them and one of the reasons This Is My Idea is so long compared to similar songs in other movies is because they try to show that Derek is actually growing to appreciate her.
They probably could have executed it better but that's the reason Derek doesn't have an answer, I don't see it as him fumbling for anything other than beauty I see it as him struggling to put it into words because it's second nature to him now because it grew naturally for him over the more than 10 years they've actually known each other.
@@HunterSlayer2727 That's what the opening montage is about, they only do it in a few minutes but he's known her for more than long enough to see her kindness over the years, unfortunately their desire to hold back on showing that as much as they should to have the big reveal of them coming back together is kind of a failure in execution on that score

Even in This is My Idea, Braum says in the song “ I think you sorta like her, fess up!” Showing that yeah they were getting feelings for each other, they just balked at the concept of this being their parents doing especially in their teens. I would even go farther to think that odette really wanted him to answer in a more profound way is because though the growing up montage, she went through a little bit of an awkward stage while Derek did not then she had her glow up and wanted to make sure Derek wasn’t just seeing that and jumping into it while she liked him for him. But idk, I could just be a romantic 🤷♀️
@@HunterSlayer2727 Well the more he likes her the less he's bullying her, the whole movie is sort of about his developing maturity, in the montage he goes from fighting with her as part of rebelling against the arranged marriage to being frustrated but impressed by her as he tries to come to terms with his feelings, which parallels in the main movie how starts by thinking that accepting the marriage is growth but has to learn that developing actual dedication and introspection is growth
This is one of my absolute favorite Princess movies! What a pleasant surprise! It’s actually loosely based of The Swan Lake ballet and it was part of the reason I fell in love with this movie

I always watched this movie as a kid, and it was one of my favourites, I do still enjoy it today as it's very nostalgic, I tend to sing along to the songs even though they may not be on par with Disney 😂 but I'm glad you mostly enjoyed it overall, I feel like it's a movie you don't really see or hear much about so it's great that you reacted to it Nick 🥰
The Swan Princess 2 and 3 is a definite must after! I didn't much care for the films after because they changed animation style to more 3D. Thanks for reacting to a very personal favorite. :)
Childhood classic. My siblings and I loved this film and would sing along to it. One of the best and lesser known Non-Disney films. I'm surprised so many people don't like this film. The rest of the franchise is understandable, but not this film.
That, "What else is there?" Really hit me hard as a six-year-old watching this. I felt the truth of it (that that's how some people think, what they value) in my tiny little bones, and it deeply disturbed me. I was a better than average looking kid and some part of me knew that I'd just become aware of something I'd grapple with on and off throughout my life. And I did. My CHURCH asked me not to attend until I could have a breast reduction, because I was leading some men to have impure thoughts (I was FOURTEEN, so, um, there's multiple reasons why it's gross and wrong, and also, NOT MY FAULT), and that if I wanted to be a good Christian, I should help them in their walk with God by removing myself. I protested, saying I was as modest as possible (loose black clothing; people thought between that and my pale skin that I was a goth), and they agreed I was trying my best. But it wasn't good enough.
Also, even my parents' friends couldn't stop themselves from staring. It was horrible. One memorable night was at a crab shack, and it was hot, so I wasn't wearing a crew neck like usual. I noticed the man of the couple staring at my chest, so I used the menu as a shield for as long as I could, even kept it after the others were picked up, "Just looking for the next time we come." My mother, very sharp, noticed everything, saw I was uncomfortable, but it took her a minute, because these were their FRIENDS, and she wasn't expecting it. When I had to surrender the menu, I took my hair down and put it in front of me (always had long hair to use as a shield). She said, "Honey, you're so flushed; why don't you put your hair up. I know how hot it makes you." I protested that I was fine. She started to look for who was making me uncomfortable, recognizing the signs, and when she saw the man's eyes popping out of their sockets when he'd glance, or full on look, her mouth became a thin line, her eyes narrowed, and she looked like a tigress about to pounce. She asked me to the bathroom, we talked, I asked her not to make a scene at the table, and she didn't. But they never hung out with him again. His wife, some, sure. But him? No, and he was not allowed around me. My luck was in my family; they have always protected me.
Then there was the fact that my schoolmates started treating me like I was less intelligent or hypersexual because I was moderately attractive and had a figure. I didn't date, but then there were rumors that was the case because I was secretly sleeping with everyone (guys would make fake boasts) and no one wanted the shame of being my boyfriend while I ran around with the entire school behind their back. But some knew the truth. What did they do with it? A lottery, everyone paid in. They tried to date me, get in my pants, and bring back underwear as proof that they succeeded in the deed. One guy asked me to just give it to him and we'd split the money. Like my reputation was worth so little, like it wasn't demeaning and degrading.
Then there were the guys who said it was "false advertising," to have my body type and not "put out," after a few dates, that "girls like me," were supposed to be sexual, and me not being down with it was being a "tease." Some got very upset, very angry. I had to deal with assault multiple times, and only self-defense classes and one guy being on the slender side stopped something very bad from happening. He threatened to press charges when he found out I broke his collarbone and rib, but I told him I'd tell them WHY I broke them, why I HAD to resort to violence, as words and pleading had not been effective, and he decided to heal in silence.
Since then, I've found my prince. When I was worried about meeting him while still having some serious dental work done (various issues caused wicked dry mouth and I was missing several teeth, not a great look), and asked if he wanted to postpone a few months until I could put my best foot forward, he said, "You are so much more than your teeth." The miracle of it? I believed him. I believed also, that when he did see me, he wouldn't change his mind and run for the kills. When COVID put a stop to my dental progress at a very awkward stage, he didn't seem phased at all, or embarrassed of me. He loved me for me, all of me, teeth or no teeth. Now the work is done and I can grin as widely as I want at our wedding in two weeks and three days.
When I talked with my fiance about this movie (we bonded early over Don Bluth and being some of very few people who know what happened to the voice actress for Ducky in The Land Before Time), I asked him, "No, seriously. I like that you think I'm attractive; that bodes well for us! But, what else is attractive, why did you drive all the way here? What keeps you wanting to talk to me?" He paused a long while, took my hand (a gesture he still does when it's important, to feel connected with me), "Everything. Even the things that sometimes irritate me. You. All of you. You're my person." Prince Derek's got nothing on Prince Jonathan. 😅
I also got that breast reduction (due to pain, NOT pressure), and am enjoying having so many fewer men leer at me. It's very freeing. And now, I'll be able to dance at my wedding, while before, the pain would have prevented me from even standing for more than about 10 minutes. That church, however, is not going to see my face again. Blaming the leers of grown men on a girl barely out of her tweens is repulsive, and that it took place under a steeple and in the name of God makes it that much more repugnant.
The days of dodging jerks and worrying if I'd be enough, if the me inside myself would add up to what people expected from the outside of me, they're over. I've got my happily ever after, without having to turn into a swan, and I can't wait to see what adventures my prince and I get up to next. 😊
I am so sorry for your struggles. I can partially relate. I developed my chest fairly quickly around 12yrs old and by the time I was 14 I was already a DD. My mom told me I got my fraternal grandmother’s genes in the breast department and that I would likely get much larger. She was correct. At 16 I was wearing an F. I used to get those same leering looks from older men and a few times was hit on by men my dad’s age. I was very cautious of that unwanted, potentially dangerous attention and rarely wore anything tight. I also wouldn’t swim without a cover and I made sure all my bras were thickly padded so if I got cold, it wouldn’t show and draw more attention. There were weeks at a time where I would wear bulky sweatshirts all day at school in 90 degree weather just to hide my figure.
I was lucky enough to never be reprimanded/blamed by the church I attended so I can’t even imagine how terrible they made you feel. There is so much wrong with society when a child is blamed for being a temptress to a bunch of adults. Like you, I have been singled out for advertising and not selling, as it were. Even my personal trainer commented I had a great chest.... my personal trainer. But he was also super respectful of my body and would only touch me if he absolutely had to, with my permission. Oddly, I felt more at ease with him than I’ve felt with any other man who was attracted to my chest. Perhaps because he was honest about his interest but never made me feel bad about it?

Hi Nick! The story is based on the ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky, which was written in the late 1800s. A lot of modern tales probably took a lot of inspiration from Swan Lake (rather than the other way around). That being said, a lot of things were significantly changed for this movie. Obviously, it's hard to make a ballet classic into an animated movie for kids, but it's not just that: whole story lines and characters have been removed and the ending has been changed completely. Nevertheless, I think the reason this movie did so well is because it's based on such a great story.

And the Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky was based on well-known Russian and East-European folk stories that fits very well into other traditional European tales. Just like Disney these creators took an old tale and made it their own. Was Disney the first to do so? Far from. The first tale fitting "young wealthy man searching for a young girl by fitting a shoe" is from Ancient Egypt. Is Disney's version the most well known one? Yes. Will it be the last? No.
So Disney didn't start the tropes with giving the baby a gift as it was born - it was an actual European custom back in the middle ages to give gifts to the newborn prince or princess, just like Americans have baby showers nowadays.
The same can be said for a lot of their movies based on old European fairy tales and retellings of these. These tales are told over and over, all over the world, as part of a collective story-telling tradition. Before they were written down they were told by bards or storytellers. That our medium nowadays is mostly movies is just the next step.
So before thinking "they copied Disney", check to see if Disney copied someone. 9 cases out of 10 they did.

In the end, these are old archetypes in folklore. And we know Disney likes *that*. Nothing wrong with being inspired, though. Just saying that Disney wasn't the inventor of everything.
@@FamousGirlfriend If you need to compress a lot of storytelling into about 1,5 hours then archetypes as well as simplification and very unsubtle (sometimes) storytelling is needed. See Tangled for a good example of making something new out of something old. I myself am no big fan of Frozen to be honest (I love the original Snow Queen by H. C Andersen and would have loved to see more of it incorporated) but I haven't watched it for quite some time, so I'm probably biased.

GAAAHHHH, a childhood favorite that I STILL love like crazy!!! It's so hilarious!!! Rogers saying that Derek should write a book about how to offend women is a classic!!! Rogers, the frog and Puffin are my three favorites. And of course Odette. She's amazing.
Every studio wanted to have their own animated princess movies, Thumbelina is another one that's not Disney but it's basically just like a Disney princess movie.

This was always my FAVORITE movie growing up! The biggest reason I still love it and think it's *super* underrated is because, unlike most of the Disney princess stories, they didn't just meet and fall in love in like a day. They grew up together and knew each other their whole lives before falling in love, which I feel makes it MUCH more meaningful!!
For me, the cartoon stands on a par with some Disney films. The most memorable moments were the duet of Odette and Derek and the transformation of Odette. The only thing that confused me was how Derek recognized the fake Odette. The second Shrek did a better job in my opinion. By the way, why did they change the name of the main character from Tchaikovsky's original ballet?

Honestly love this move and it's two sequels (I refuse to acknowledge the CGI ones exist) I love the relationship between them and how it grows I love that they're written to be realistic and flawed not just perfect right off the bat I like that they struggle before getting their happy ending I love how in the second one it shows married life and happily ever after aren't always perfect as well this is such an amazing and underrated trilogy the first one being the best of the three

Me and my cousins favorite movie when we were little! Surprised to hear other people don’t like it! I just loved the music 🤍
She is one of my favorite princesses. Also I love swans so it was a plus for me. But it gave me nostalgia cause I been watching these movies since I was little and loved them so much til now. I think she met the side characters when she got turned into a swan but it's true, I do wish they put in how they met, that would have been neat.
The 90's featured a few non-Disney animated musicals featuring female leads. These studios were attempting to experiment with the Disney formula so they could have success as well. They weren't all well received by fans. Swan Princess, Quest for Camelot and Anastasia, to name a few, are among the most talked about, with Anastasia generally being considered the best non Disney princess musical at the time.
A few fun non Disney animated musical films to check out if you haven't already are The Last Unicorn, Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland, All Dogs go to Heaven and Cats Don't Dance.

From what I heard, someone who worked on this movie did work with Disney for some years and then went to work on this movie. So, that could explain the Disney feeling in the animation.

So happy you reacted to this finally! :D As a child I really liked this movie, and especially the first three songs. Also what I appreciate about this was, they in fact grew up with each other so when they finally got together, they knew how the other one was as a person. You don't find this much in normal princess movies, where it's love at first sight and after that happily forever. I don't blame Derek for not thinking about anything else but beauty at first, looking at his mother, it's probably what she has been teaching him, even later she just made those beauty contests for him, instead of letting him meet the girls in private to know them. Also, this movie was based on the famous ballet "Swan Lake" :)
As for other movie suggestions, I still would suggest the chinese movie "Nezha (2020)", which was an enormous success, has gorgeous animation and also moves you to tears with its story. Not seen anyone reacting to that one yet, shame not many people know the movie. I really think, you would like it.

My guilty pleasure movie as a kid and always held my puffin stuffed animal with me every time I watched it! I still love movies 1-3, but I can see why others might not like it. It's a shame that its not talked about more. It's such a classic.
This was one of my favourites. I loved that Derek and Odette knew each other since childhood and the love made sense to me. And the first song and their duet was always my favourites songs in this movie. Don't understand why this movie is controversial.
So a few people have mentioned this already, but this movie is based on the classic ballet “Swan Lake” and there are several movies that reference or directly depict this story (this movie, an anime version that I loved as a child, Black Swan, Billy Elliot, and many more). It’s a great “princess” story with a magician villain named Rothbart, a prince, and typically Rothbart does use a fake Odette (either his daughter or as in this film, his sidekick) to trick the prince.
I’m 33 and there are certain lines in this movie that are ingrained into my memory from my childhood, mostly Speed and Jean Bob bits, but I also loved Rogers for his sarcasm. His line, “You should write a book: How to offend women in 5 syllables or less” still makes me laugh. Jean Bob: “If anything happens to her, I’ll have you wheeeeped, flogged, put on ze rack, and zen… have your back legs fried in butterrr”
The songs were enjoyable to me as a kid and I still remember most of them.
If you can find the Anime version (it uses the original Swan Lake ballet score) I’d highly recommend watching it. There are also cute animal side characters…

I think it's super unusual that the villain song is the most colorful song inside this movie. The others are 'normal'. Just recognized it...
And I think it's a little bit strange and cruel that Derek served swan things at the ball.. I don't think Odette want to see all the swan stuff right in front of her. Her swan time was not the best you know ..

I really loved this movie as a child. We had it on VHS and I watched it super often. It's a shame more people don't know about it and the history behind the story with the ballet etc.

Easy 10/10 movie but would be an 11/10 if every streaming service was required to show an ad featuring the Pillsbury Doughboy before it. That's the only way to truly recapture the feeling of watching it on VHS in the 90s.
I'm pretty sure I suggested this movie before on one of your other videos. I know it's not what people call a 'Good' movie, but I still like it. Both as a child I liked it, and even as an adult I liked it. I like the concept and the conflict. I also love the concept of turning into animals, so using that as a form of 'imprisonment' is a cool concept for me.
Also, I so love the Villain.

Rewatching it with your reaction, I still like it a lot. Especially with the 'princess' dying at the end, a twist even Disney doesn't pull. Even Sleeping Beauty was just 'Sleeping', and not dead. A, as people call it, 'Guilty Pleasure' of mine, this movie is.
