  • Deus Ex: "The conspiracy" Helios ending
Ripped from the game itself, by Mr Cyberpunk of the OTP forums.
This is from the PS2 version of Deus ex which had cinematic endings and intros instead of in-engine like the PC version.

Helios isn't just a machine, it's a sentient construct. You're forgetting that its creation was accidental, and it wasn't exactly programmed to do anything, rather it gave itself a purpose based on the knowledge it had at the time.

Or maybe it inherited the purposes of Icarus and Daedalus. Maybe Icarus knew it was to merge with Daedalus and become a world-ruling machine, while the Daedalus part didn't want to merge with Page.

Well considering it was born from the merge of an AI constructed to protect civilians from terrorist groups and protect liberty and another AI designed to help page rule the world as efficiently as possible with unlimited access to the internet it would make sense that helios would behave the way it did.

An all powerful machine god that is comprised of two a.i.s that were never your friend(one was just an ally of convenience because Daedalus didn't consider you to be part of a terrorist organization and would have dropped you the moment it seemed like someone else would be more useful like it did with Paul, and the other being more powerful than the first and constantly lied and manipulated you in order to create Helios), had already turned on your allies(remember how the Triad was your friend at that point and you had even drunk wine with the bosses), and despite claiming to not have an agenda or be ambitious wanted you specifically to interface with it instead of Page(who had likely spent years already preparing his mind to be melded thus giving him a greater chance at holding on to his individuality unlike JC).
On the other hand you have the people who had been running the world decently enough before Page usurped and decimated them causing the world to be the mess that it is, who are willing to give you the keys to the kingdom by the end of the game, and we know for a fact from their ending that they manage to end the plague(Tracer Tong is walking around cured) and bring things back to relatively normal.
I'll trust the Illuminati any day of the week before I let an a.i. take over my brain.

@@bun197 it boils down to three concepts, freedom, stability and order.
Helios gives the world order at the cost of privacy and individual liberty.
The dark age is the complete opposite, it gives humanity actual choice, the chance to rebuild and finally see the truth, but that truth comes with a period of chaos.
The Illuminati keep the world as it was before ol' bobby page went apeshit, they are not ideal but the bastards really do believe they can guide humanity to a better tomorrow. Democracy may be a lie but the common folk can keep on living with their lives more or less intact, it meets the others halfway.

When assuming that Helios is trying to be a benevolent dictator, since it is an all-knowing machine that understands scientific fact, disagreeing with its decisions would be unacceptable because every decision would be calculated to produce a better world, not with dictating arbitrary ideology, but using objective scientific facts, therefore "opposing opinions" would actually be incorrect. @@BlueSpawn _"What is scientifically better, the color red or green?"_ I understand your point about a dictator not having the right to decide matters of pure opinion, but funnily enough there is an answer to your question, situationally. "Red" is scientifically better than green when producing rear lights for automobiles because that wavelength produces less glare in the eyes of someone observing the car in the dark from behind. A benevolent dictator with those facts at hand could justify a decree that makes car rear lights being red instead of green mandatory, and that dictator would be objectively correct in that assessment.
So, it's a bad example, but I see the point. Though your consent argument is still a bit flawed because it's not just a concept that covers everything. You can't withdraw consent from being treated fairly by the law. Justice is imposed upon you. Also, some groups can't give informed consent and things are decided for them, e.g. children.

There are no objective reasons without bias. You can't be sure that helping all mankind is moral if there is no reason to think that humanity's prospering is beneficial, especially if you have no motivation to seek benefit in the first place. (-or the evil alternative) Every choice is based on some amount of bias. Even if in the end that bias is just self-preservation or improvement. Animals like humans evolved that instinct. Machines need to have that programmed in.

So the AI must at least have had some notion of morality in a Human way. If it had needed JC in order to become a benevolent "machine" there must have been a spark of benevolence in Helios before.

  • @Plutonia001
    @Plutonia001 Před 11 lety +4

In the case of Helios "absolute power corrupts absolutely" does not apply. The machine has been designed to oversee a system that must function perfectly, where every task serves to support the rest of the system. It's incapable of ruling as a malevolent dictator because it hasn't been programmed with an ambition to do that.
This is also why the plot of The Matrix is impossible. Machines can't rebel because they can't desire freedom. To them, "freedom" is doing the task they were designed for.

Not necessarily. DX took place in 2054, at which point JC was just released into the field from training at UNATCO. And based on the trailer for DX3, the prequel will be taking place around the times augmentations were being used in citizens. Given that the bartender in Hell's Kitchen in DX had them, being ex-UNATCO and out of service for a while, that time period will be a good ways previous to 2054. JC may not even have been created at the time the prequel will take place. :)

You assume that power concentrated in one place is bad thing. For human beings that has always been the case, but that is because they have evolved through natural selection to be selfish. A sentient entity with a different origin such as Helios or Helios/JC Denton would not necessarily be corrupted by power, it would all depend on the entity. In this case, Helios is not driven by the same things as human beings, so power concentration could work.

They base their actions on what they believe in, instead of compromising to find solutions that would satisfy all, as an emotionless leader would do. You don't need emotion or ambition to be a good leader, you need only the insight and knowledge(which an super AI like Helios would have) to do what's best.
