    Glad to see a video on this. Have the game and bought the expansion on BGG from the publisher I believe. Haven't played the expansion yet but enjoyed the base game playing a 2-player game by myself to try it out. Really like the action selection mechanism in this! :-)

    57:30 Yellow also had a movement that they didn't use.
    I like the look of this game, and several of the mechanics. I've always liked these kinds of scorings that encourage you to diversify. One benefit of this (which SU&SD first alerted me to in their review of Tigris and Euphrates) is that it softens the impact of player conflict. You don't feel too bad about someone muscling in on your military points after you've gotten a bunch, because it's probably time for you to focus on something else anyway. I also like the tile-action thing, though I'm a bit concerned about how easy it is to lock yourself into having too many ritual tiles.
    If there's one thing I really don't like, it's the mask action. I am very much not a fan of actions that don't do anything but get you points. I want to be scored _for_ my engine, rather than build an engine that scores points.

    • @Burning_Tyger
      @Burning_Tyger Před 2 lety +1

      One of my favorite games. It is not easy to lock yourself into ritual side, although you have complete control of that, and it is one of the things you consider when choosing your action row for the year. Keep in mind, the tiles that slide off at the end of the year will always flip back over to their normal action side before they are placed back at the top of your player board. Also, if you use a ritual action, it will flip back over to the normal side when you flip the actions you played. Lastly, there are progress tiles that allow you to flip tiles, or switch the locations of tiles, etc. So really it is quite difficult to have all your tiles flip to the ritual side. But even if you do have a large number of tiles flipped to the ritual side, it can be quite lucrative to perform multiple ritual actions in a row because you get to add two natives from your longhouse to your starting territory each time you take it, and then score the smallest number. So taking successive ritual actions usually means you are going to score a greater number of points on the ritual track with each successive action. You can score a large number of points on that track in a single year of actions. Which to that point, if you have all your tiles on the ritual side, it probably means you have been somewhat ignoring the ritual track. So performing two or more successive ritual actions for big point returns is a good way to catch up that track. In fact, that is one of the little strategies of this game that will reveal itself through plays (or youtube comments).

      Good catch on the mistake, I've added corrections. Interesting perspective regarding the conflict and the "score lowest" tracks. I think you make some good points there.

    You can do an outpost transfer on any of your turns, so it is never correct to turn a warrior directly into a farmer or hunter on the same turn unless your action tile also lets you harvest.
    I've wanted to love Wendake for a few years now, but I finally came to the conclusion that it's just okay and not great. It's a lot like Civilization: A New Dawn, in that it has a genius action selection mechanism which no other game uses but which powers a profoundly mediocre game. Hopefully someday Wendake's action grid will get it's own Ark Nova treatment.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  Před 2 lety

      Huh, that hadn't occurred to me. I haven't actually played this game with others, or all the way through, and I suppose it does make sense to hold back on the transfer until you need it.

    I should have mentioned this when this video went live. In this video (Wendake tutorial), your voice sounds a lot quieter than when I was watching your Cubitos tutorial a few minutes earlier, even though the Cubitos tutorial went live months ago, and I'm using the same sound volumes on both my computer, the CZcams video, etc. for both videos.
    I wanted to ask if you got a new mic this year, etc. to see what your volume is much lower in your recent videos (last few months or so) than the ones you did at the beginning of the calendar year, since I was noticing that with your most recent videos, your voice is a lot quieter than the ones that was uploaded in February 2021 and before that time, since your older videos have you talker much loader, and I was able to hear you better in those videos.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  Před 2 lety

      I'm using the same microphone, but I have been tweaking the audio processing I do over the years. Perhaps I've accidentally gone too quiet.

    • @danielschaublin
      @danielschaublin Před 2 lety

      @@JonGetsGames Would either tweaking the audio process so that you a little louder in the videos, or subscripting a headset with a mic on it, help so that I would be able to hear you with the same sound settings I use for all videos without needing to max out the volume on my computer? The Cubitos tutorial video would set an example as to what the volume should be in your tutorial videos.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  Před 2 lety

      I think it did get too quiet in my editing, I've subsequently increased the volume on my template so hopefully this month's videos have been better.

    • @danielschaublin
      @danielschaublin Před 2 lety

      @@JonGetsGames I watched the tutorial for ECO: Coral Reef that you uploaded today and compared it's audio to your Cubitos tutorial again, and the Cubtios still has you talking loader and better than the ECO one, and the Cubtios one was the one in which I could hear you fine.
      With ECO, you sounded slightly better, but not as great as the Cubtios one where you were excellent.
      Just to ask, did you change editing software that causing the quieter voice in your recently videos too, since I remember watch you older videos from even late 2010s where you sounded excellent and I could hear it with the sound settings on my computer that I use for each video?
      I wanted to know if the editing software or something down the line changed that was causing the quieter voice from you in the videos from this month and maybe within the last 2 months.
      In summary, I enjoyed those older videos due to your voice sounding nice and clear there. With the recent tutorials, I can't pinpoint where the sound quantity got somewhat worse since that, even though you said that you made it louder on the template.

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  Před 2 lety

      Ah, I'm so sorry but ECO was a bad example :( I finished that one in mid December but the video release was delayed due by the publisher, so it's audio levels are on par with the other quiet ones. I haven't changed my software, but I have tweaked the levels and other filters quite abit over the years, trying to make it sound better. Unfortunately it really seems like there's no way to make it sound good for all headphones, I have to pick and choose which it will sound good for and I recently purchased some professional audio mastering headphones and use those as my baseline. I have no more videos form the past in the queue, so new ones on the channel should reflect the current settings I'm working with. Thanks again so much for all this feedback, I really do appreciate it.

    • @Burning_Tyger
      @Burning_Tyger Před 2 lety

      I don't know how much the Italian designer consulted with any cultural authorities from the represented proples, but I do know he tried to use appropriate motifs and artwork that would be associated with the Great lakes tribes. I read the designer has a strong interest in native American history and culture. The rulebook tries to point out and educate players regarding the various motifs used in the game and how they're appropriate to those tribes. I'm sure it's not perfect. But as far as the masks are concerned, research "false face society" and look at images. I believe all the masks used in the game are based on actual historical masks you can find images from.
