  • This etude is great to practice for: 1) articulations all around the instrument; 2) intonation on scales; and 3) evenness of sound throughout the registers AND dynamics. And it's simple enough that it makes it quite challenging -- there's no place to hide!

    Do you have to be a master for playing that this way, or is the way play that 10,000 times to become a master?

      Very interesting question - it’s not really an either/or proposition. We can aim to play every note with clarity and evenness of sound regardless what level at which we play; this puts us on the path to mastery. But ultimately, mastery means playing at a level with clarity, evenness, and control. Those things are a means to the end of mastering the instrument.
