  • Today we're comparing one of my favorite cameras of all time the Sony A6400. We're going to compare it to one of the most popular full frame mirrorless cameras of all time the Sony A7SII.
While the A7SII is a fantastic low light monster camera the A6400 can do most of the same stuff for less money, but it has a flip up screen and way better autofocus.
So is the A7SII worth three times at much?!
    Lets find out!

The a6400 is a game changer for me. I'm coming from a GH5 and the autofocus is 10 times much better than the GH5. I use my Zhiyun Crane V2 and let the camera do all the autofocus. I no longer have to worry if my camera is in focus. You're last review made me switch over and don't regret one bit of it. I picked up the a6400 body with the Sigma 16mm 1.4F and Sony 55-210mm lens. Love this setup.

I just got the a6400, and your videos this year definitely helped me make up my mind. With the 16-50 kit or a pancake lens, this thing is COMPACT! Photos are usable even with the kit and videos looking great so far, really loving it.

One thing I’d like to add is that I got the AT9912 mic from Audio Technica to go with the camera. This thing is so tiny and attaches to the mic jack itself without using the shoe mount, so no fixes or workarounds or whatever needed

I’m a huge fan of my Sony a6400 paired with the Sigma 16mm 1.4. A lot of people don’t like it because lack of ibis. I just use a smallrig cage with a wood handle attachment and it stabilizes my shot very well!

I had to restart and put this on my better monitor to check what I was seeing. As impressive as the A7sII is, it looked like it was showing it's age or smaller sensor. The 6400 seemed a lot sharper. I guess it could also be a settings tweak.🤷‍♂️
I also found when you were outside, it made for a nice blurry background comparison. I preferred less blur, which I was not expecting.
In studio the 6400 was brighter, did you notice how much difference there was in your camera settings?

Hi. I´ve purchased a 6400. I´ve only used it as a videocamera ones (in a indoor interview situation with a Sigma 16 mm and för voice over clips outdoors with the kit lens) yet, and I´m very impressed with quality of the picture (from the Sigma and shallow depth of field) and AF. The picture quality is much better than what I get from the Canon XA 30 that I also used during the interview, and better than my 5D mk iii that I´ve done comparing testshots with (note: the AF is really good at the XA 30 and a nightmare on the 5D). I bought the 6400 thanks to that the Swedish television (SvT) use it(!) and your, and many others, testvideos on YT. But one statement puzzles me: a lot of the testers (as you) says things like: "it´s the best camera for vlogging, B-shots and for publishing on the net" that makes me assuming that the picture quality really isn´t that good? I´m I right or wrong? If I want a significant better quality for the video, what camera should I get then (I´m going to replace the XA 30)? One more thing; zooming manually with the 6400 kit lens is tricky, I often get a "notch" in the middle of zooming (the automatic XA 30 zoom is a lot better).

I made a similar decision recently. I bought the A6600 vs A7R2. As good as the full frame is, the A6600 is much more versatile and up to date. Also with a cheap Sigma 16mm F1.4, it will give you awesome performance for both landscape and low light photography. The A6400-6600 have a phenomenally fast autofocus with 11fps. The A7R2 will not have as fast an autofocus and will show its age in the long term. Hope this helps.

I just bought a used A7Sii for $640. I cant even find an A6400 on eBay for that much. Most people buy full frame cameras specifically for a reason. For instance unique depth of field and exceptional low light performance. There is a certain look that you can get with FF. There is no APSC equivalent to the look that an f/1.8 prime lens gets on a full frame camera. No features on an APSC camera can replace that for me personally. Certainly not a flippy screen and slightly faster AF. To me a lot of APSC shots look like iPhone pics. Everything in focus and flat. 🤷🏻‍♂️

If you are only doing photography and no videos. Nikon D800 and D850 are the best. I still use my d3100 and love it. Nikon is the king for still photos, with canon a second.

@@vinaynagdev3774 I shoot Nikon. So not sure. I knew some canon shooters when I lived in North Carolina 3 years ago. The best lenses for wildlife was a 400 with 2× teleconverter. The 70-200 is a beast for just about everything. Sorry dont really know much about canon bodies.

a6400 with small rig hotshoe locator. For the win. Allows you to offset your rode wireless go or video mic go and still see the screen.

For me personally I’d take the a6400. But if you are going to be behind the camera the whole time I’d probably go xt3.

The Everyday Dad in theory yes, but an aps-c sensor will never top a full frame sensor (modern sensors) and full frame 4k is rly nice as well. Color rendition and detail of sony ff sensors is amazing

WRONG!! The A6400 has sharper video, better colors, better autofocus, no recording limit, better battery life and a flip screen.
