The First Crusade: The Bloody Road to Jerusalem (1/2)

- The First Crusade was one of the most extraordinary, bloody and significant episodes in medieval history. It began with an appeal for aid from the Christian Byzantine Empire, threatened by the rising power of the Muslim Seljuk Turks. But when Pope Urban II preached a sermon at Clermont in 1095, the result was unlike anything ever seen before. The Pope offered spiritual salvation to those willing to go east to aid their fellow Christians in a holy war, and help liberate Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Knights and peasants alike signed up in their thousands, leading to the disastrous People's, or Peasants', Crusade, then to a much more organised and powerful Princes' Crusade. Their forces gathered at Constantinople, where they made an uneasy alliance with Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Entering Anatolia, they helped to win back the city of Nicaea, then won a decisive but hard-fought victory at Dorlyaeum, before marching on the great city of Antioch...

Love your stuff. If you take requests, please do something on the 4th Crusade. That was an amazing story....
Epic History TV great video bro! Instant sub
Amazing stuff. Love the work. Makes it so interesting and lively.
One guy?! Amazing editing bro!
Epic History TV You should make a better research about the battles in crusades. Like doryleaum.
The voice of the narrator is fricking historic voice
AHHHHHHHHHHH
It reminds me of the guy in the store who gave Harry Potter his first wand
Too High I KNEW he sounded familiar! 😁
You could say he has an Epic historic voice? Eh, eh?
John Q. Public they do not sound alike at all. 🙄
The epic music paired with that narration. Brilliant
yea i feel like i should cook up some popcorns
Yes but Byzantine empire is not bih-zantine empire, it's bizzanteen empire.
@@hansolowe19 not necessarily. In Europe they pronounce it in various ways
Yes, quite
I noticed that too. Higher production quality than cable TV. Hope they cover each of the crusades
I'm blown away by how awesome this presentation really is. The sounds, narration, graphics, etc. are just superb. And that music is epic, gets me pumped up & excited to immerse myself in the story. This is the type of history lesson that not only adults, but children would find very interesting & entertaining. Great job to all who created this channel! You have a new subscriber that is excited to see more of your fantastic work.
Thank you!
@@EpichistoryTv The only note I have is the map. At the start of the video you used a map to show europe around ~1100, but u can clearly see the province of Flevoland. This part of the Netherlands didn't excist before 1950 because it's reclaimed land from the sea. Still an amazing video and I really enjoyed it, but i wanted to let you know.
@@EpichistoryTv yeah I love your pieces on not only the first crusade but also the Napoleonic wars and the history of Russia. Please make more and don't stop.. you guys are awesome 😀👍
Oh and don't forget the First World War 😀
That one was absolutely awesome.
I hope you guys make one on the Second World War would love to watch it 👍
Constantinople is calling for aid!
And Rome will answer!!
Edit: this has nothing to do with the Roman Empire, but more with the pope and the Byzantine emperor
Romans/Italy had history but they barely brag about it. I see a lot of Scottish, english pretending to be romans by even changing the name of the crusade itself. don’t you find that weird? Never seen such a phenomenon among people.
@@diableflanchez5042 That's true, and it's because many people are ignorant and don't know what their History is like...though what you just said is really interesting and totally true, I never thought about It we Italians don't brag enough about our Roman past(forget about Mussolini he was mad)or at least not as much as we should while I see people from all over Europe pretending to be heir of Rome while don't even knowing that the Roman Empire wasn't European at all...
@etty77 that’s incorrect, Rome was small country with a vast empire. It dominated the culture and language of its subject nations. Romans never assimilated with non-romans as it was blasphemous, even the Macedonian didn’t like Alexander the Great for doing it. Romans had ministers whom appointed the law in subject nations but never have they mingled with them. The peasants of Rome never left the capital and the merchants never stayed in one spot. If your grandparents were Romans and your now English, your no longer Roman. You would have your own history. Don’t be saying we’re children of Rome, that’s false. The children of Rome are present day Italians.
@@diableflanchez5042 In an ethnical sense yes, but don't forget that since the reign of emperor Caracalla everyone in the empire obtained the Roman citizenship so at the end everyone was a Roman...but if you want to speak about genetic than yes we Italians are the closest you can get.
@etty77 In the sense that they adopted Roman culture and law yes, but the Romans had no idea of a sort of unity between all Europeans, Europe wasn't even a thing for them, in fact if you were to be a roman in Egypt or Syria you would feel almost as much as home as in Rome while to be sent at the Rhine frontiere or in Britain for a Roman would be like if he was at the edge of the world, in a land of cold and little civilization.

more history than the history channel.
Not enough aliens in this
history channel is not history it's bullsh**t myths and concpiriacy theories.. about aliens building the pyramids and all kinds of lies.. that make people stupid by the minute listening to it..

haha look at 14:27 "Byzantine Armies , this is looks like Rus' army, especially, nord sword, chainmail(Characteristic for Varangians), another man wear red slavic kosovorotka(косоворотка) and heavy axe (prefer used slavic Rus' army and vikings mercenaries) Also, the shape of their helmets is more suitable for the helmet of Rus' warrior. So on the right side of the book depicts a army of Rus' of that time.
“In the Rhineland, they attacked Jewish settlements” Hmmm this seems like a tradition
Yes, i love catholics
@Vinnie P. from what I've read, the relationship between crusading and medieval anti-Judaism, was mostly correlation rather than causation.
@@JP-bl7vl Yeah, nothing to do with the crusades directly.
That was just the same old anti semitism that's plagued Europe since the dark ages or before. Nothing new to see there.
to be fair almost every single great empire in history hated the jews, going back to the Pharaos. Not like the Germans invented Anti-Judaism.
@Jimmy Breeze 109 countries. They never mention why they were driven out.
As a muslim i loved your video. History is history. We should take lesson from that
It's just unfortunate this isn't the first crusade. And he leaves out the beginning. The papacy built stone monuments and minted coins to commemorate the slaughter of the Christian albigensians, waldensians, and Donatists. This is historical revision. But everyone is so used to the lies by omissions and lies to the reasons if they ever did read the real history it would shock them. For instance the papacy had cannons made for the Muslim army that sacked Constantinople and rid them of their rivals in the orthodox sect of the apostate church.
This is so impressive. The narration, visuals and music is top notch. Good job
100% solid work.
I thought this was National Geographic, History Channel or Discovery or Curiosity.... etc. OMG, this channel is pure gold !!
God job

@@fyurerys Dude, slavs look like byzantines and not the other way around. Much of Russian culture is based of off byzantines. Alphabeth, language, names, religion, architecture...
Amazing goodness
Please do more of this crusade series. Loved the napoleon series but would really enjoy medieval or Greek or Roman history with your team, art and narration !
Bloody awesome, mate! This is marvellous work. Many many thumbs up! Great voice over work as well. Subbed and looking forward to more videos.
These brief, imaginative lessons of history are excellent sources of knowledge about subjects I do not normally read about. 👍 Appreciate the work given in making such works available and in such time increments.
A teacher used this as a big part of the Year 8 curriculum on Medieval History. Big thumbs up!
Proof school is obsolete, generally.

Too bad the video is inaccurate... Rethink your edumacation
Ah, so an incomplete depiction with bias is bring used to indoctrinate. Shocked.
Note to self: when going on crusade, don't forget to make a sandwich
@Theo Lionheart since when? Oh that is right! Christianity has been LIBERALIZED globally over the last few decades. They no longer burn witches, or lynch black / brown , and gay people! How could I forget!
@Theo Lionheart lololololol. The entire point, since apparently you have missed it entirely, is that Christianity and Islam are both ABRAHAMIC TRADITIONS. Slavery was practiced In the USA up until only 150 years ago by SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN BAPTISTS. Black and brown folk were getting lynched by white CHRISTIAN mobs as recently as the 1950's. Hitler, believed he was genuinely doing "gods work " as stated in his MeinKampth. Ever hear of the inquisitions? Or the witch trials? How about the catholic vs protestant wars in Ireland? The fact remains....Christianity and Islam have been humanities cancer for millenia...the only difference is that Christianity has been LIBERALIZED and sanitized the last few decades...
@@catholicracialist776 I'm a former catholic...I know a bit of that corrupt global organization. I like how you simply changed my word of " liberalized " to " reform " 😁😂🤣 ...and you call me the idiot?!? How cute. The catholic church stopped using Latin in the 1950's. Funny how the " one true church " seems to be plagued with PED Priests.... what does that say about your fairy tale?

This is going to be an epic series, part 1 was amazing you guys truely have done a good job.
We really do need more history videos like this, amazing work, I am a teacher and for children that learn more from images than words is this actually perfect.
I appreciate the accuracy and the fact based approach to history in a dramatic form.
Thank you for this work and the subtitles!
Love your stuff. This is going to be a great series.
Lovely work! One of my favorite times in history. Impressive how effective Urban II's call to arms was.
Man I'm just blown away by the excellent content on this channel I was just bragging to my girlfriend about your videos and how well done they are like something you'd see on the history channel and I just read the comment about this being just one guy's hard work! Outstanding
Great job.... Everyone should admire the effort you put into making this video... Simply, great...

I was really looking forward to it!!

I think the first and the third crusade are the most dramatic, but the fourth, the fifth, sixth, and the children's crusade are also interesting. Anyway, I 'm looking forward to them all.
You make some of the best history videos on CZcams. Freaking amazing
this is so amazing! i always been curious about the crusades but never actually looking for documentary about it till now :)
Just discovered your channel...excellent, truly excellent. Detailed and not too dumbed down (a huge change from other channels).

+Epic History TV haha! Looking forward to it! :)
Epic History TV Great video! I have a small suggestion, you mentioned about how Jerusalem was taken 400 years earlier by the Muslim warriors, could you make a small prequel video documenting what happened in that 400 year time-frame?
Practical perseverance for self development and not that other tiresome disobedience validation stuff.
I accidentally undid the highlighting of the previous comment by trying to input the previous paragraph at the bottom of the once highlited post. I just do my homework as much as I can about this stuff to put it all to rest. This video is a time and headache saver! Thank you!
Your docs are among the best on CZcams. Please keep up the good work!
An amazing video, as always. You are doing a great work and explain the subject even better than some big TV historian channels. Thank you a lot!
Thank you, and thanks for the feedback!
This narrator makes it sound insanely epic, and not in a cheesy 300 way. Amazing documentary

This guy has an epic voice. I imagine one day he said to himself in that epic voice, "what talents do i posess, what can i do with myself. I know I'll narrate pictures based on tense times in history. That shall suffice."
They ran out of food in Hungary? Well that’s ironic 🤣

These are excellent videos. The best I have seen!!
This channel is truly EPIC. We need more content!
I appreciate these videos. They refresh a lot of material were thought in school during my youth. Believe it or not schools in the West used to teach universal History, maybe helped us in good interpretation of future event and the course of ideas.
I was looking for such a video. A video that explains the history on the basis of historical materials, rather than talking about a lax history with lax knowledge. I'm really happy.
This is the best content on youtube. I will treasure every minute of it. Love from india🇮🇳
Please make more of these. This is my favorite history channel
Never change epic history. I love this channel.
Thank you!
*Change is the only constant in this universe.*
Thanks for telling the actual truth, none of schools do it anymore.
I know, it is even a bigger problem here in Sweden. We learn nothing about this or any other crusade.
Our kings from the past are not even mentioned anymore in history class.
Don't even bring up the US education system that shit trash
Well said, the narrator shows no biased toward neither side, if either side believed or did something terrible, he dryly states the facts.
This is a military perspective, still good, I give it a credit but it lacks proper genesis. Knights were not fools and they would never risk their lives for a pope and church fairs - money was the main incentive (as always) as they were promised land and plunder + conquest of Middle East cut off European trade with Asia. Once Turks got divided it was time to strike. Religion was only an official excuse and nobody gave a sht about pope back then.
Michal Klebs you are mistaken. Economic reasons were there for some, but the main reason was indeed a religious fervor. This is very clear from the writing accounts of the time. Furthermore, the vast majority came back home after the conquest of Jerusalem
I am so 😊 I came across your channel. You have my little stomach hurting from uncontrollable laughing about your "PETER THE HERMIT & THE ANY & ALL PEOPLE'S CRUSADERS,yet cool that sent them thinking this crusade is being led by nobleman & fought by knights. "BASICALLY A POOR KAN BATTLE BIT THE RICH MAN WAR. HOW TRUE. I meant that I'm digging your narration. Thanks for sharing u & yours remain blessed.
