  • The First Crusade was one of the most extraordinary, bloody and significant episodes in medieval history. It began with an appeal for aid from the Christian Byzantine Empire, threatened by the rising power of the Muslim Seljuk Turks. But when Pope Urban II preached a sermon at Clermont in 1095, the result was unlike anything ever seen before. The Pope offered spiritual salvation to those willing to go east to aid their fellow Christians in a holy war, and help liberate Jerusalem from Muslim rule. Knights and peasants alike signed up in their thousands, leading to the disastrous People's, or Peasants', Crusade, then to a much more organised and powerful Princes' Crusade. Their forces gathered at Constantinople, where they made an uneasy alliance with Byzantine Emperor Alexius I Comnenus. Entering Anatolia, they helped to win back the city of Nicaea, then won a decisive but hard-fought victory at Dorlyaeum, before marching on the great city of Antioch...

      @diableflanchez5042 Před 3 lety +2

      @etty77 that’s incorrect, Rome was small country with a vast empire. It dominated the culture and language of its subject nations. Romans never assimilated with non-romans as it was blasphemous, even the Macedonian didn’t like Alexander the Great for doing it. Romans had ministers whom appointed the law in subject nations but never have they mingled with them. The peasants of Rome never left the capital and the merchants never stayed in one spot. If your grandparents were Romans and your now English, your no longer Roman. You would have your own history. Don’t be saying we’re children of Rome, that’s false. The children of Rome are present day Italians.

      @etty77 In the sense that they adopted Roman culture and law yes, but the Romans had no idea of a sort of unity between all Europeans, Europe wasn't even a thing for them, in fact if you were to be a roman in Egypt or Syria you would feel almost as much as home as in Rome while to be sent at the Rhine frontiere or in Britain for a Roman would be like if he was at the edge of the world, in a land of cold and little civilization.

      It's just unfortunate this isn't the first crusade. And he leaves out the beginning. The papacy built stone monuments and minted coins to commemorate the slaughter of the Christian albigensians, waldensians, and Donatists. This is historical revision. But everyone is so used to the lies by omissions and lies to the reasons if they ever did read the real history it would shock them. For instance the papacy had cannons made for the Muslim army that sacked Constantinople and rid them of their rivals in the orthodox sect of the apostate church.

Slavery was practiced In the USA up until only 150 years ago by SOUTHERN CHRISTIAN BAPTISTS. Black and brown folk were getting lynched by white CHRISTIAN mobs as recently as the 1950's. Hitler, believed he was genuinely doing "gods work " as stated in his MeinKampth. Ever hear of the inquisitions? Or the witch trials? How about the catholic vs protestant wars in Ireland? The fact remains....Christianity and Islam have been humanities cancer for millenia...the only difference is that Christianity has been LIBERALIZED and sanitized the last few decades...

    • @Mklebs
      @Mklebs Před 4 lety +18

      This is a military perspective, still good, I give it a credit but it lacks proper genesis. Knights were not fools and they would never risk their lives for a pope and church fairs - money was the main incentive (as always) as they were promised land and plunder + conquest of Middle East cut off European trade with Asia. Once Turks got divided it was time to strike. Religion was only an official excuse and nobody gave a sht about pope back then.

    • @thegroovee
      @thegroovee Před 4 lety +29

      Michal Klebs you are mistaken. Economic reasons were there for some, but the main reason was indeed a religious fervor. This is very clear from the writing accounts of the time. Furthermore, the vast majority came back home after the conquest of Jerusalem
