yeah, stopped too soon; we also didn't get the part where Lucy denies calling Ethel a hippopotamus and claims she just said she was 'a little hippy'; but that "on second glance she has got the biggest potamus I've ever seen."

Ethel is the funniest straight woman of all time. But really, she wasn't a straight woman. Ethel had funny lines and her comedic timing was perfection. Why are you laughing that is how you would wear them. It’s the fashion even for today. Lucy had impeccable fashion sense and when she described how to wear them she was absolutely correct. They were chic. If you’re not into high fashion which Ethel wasn’t you wouldn’t get it.

Stop looking at them as Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance and look at them as the characters they are portraying. Ethel is suppose to be older and frumpier than Lucy Ricardo, that is how the character is written. Desilu wasn't able to get an actress that physically fitted the character description, they instead cast an actress with great comedic timing.. Vance had to put on weight in order to meet the character description.

@@mamadouaziza2536 2 ppl can look at the EXACT same pic, listen 2 the EXACT same song n each see/hear something different....Neither OPINION is right or wrong....they are simply 2 different OPINIONS.....You clearly see something different than i do....Yes, Ethel was supposed to be older n frumpier than Lucy.....However, that had been firmly established by S4.....Yet S4/E9, "Ethel's Birthday"...Based on a dinner convo, while ethel's exact age was never revealed....Fred referenced dialogue associated with earlier convo at the table that placed Bethel btwn 40-50 (I perceived that as very shady b/c, it is in poor taste to ever ask a woman her age, no matter how great of friends u might be)....meanwhile, in S3/E6. "lucy tells the truth"....Once the women learn lucy is sworn to tell the truth, they ask her a serious of personal questions, one being her age, lucy replies to all of the questions, giving her age as 33 (when in fact she was 42 when the episode aired).....while i ttly comprehend your point of separation of actress vs character......The viewer usually intertwines them (when Vance signed on for the "lucy show" one of her demands was the character be named Viv,b/c she was sick of fan encounters where they wld refer to her as Ethel....In between IIL & The Lucy Show....Ball fulfilled a bucket list of "staring on Broadway".....So, via Desilu, she brought her way into "Wildcat"...one of the major hurdles she encountered was ticket buyers expecting to see Lucy Ricardo on Bway vs Lucille Ball.

So they were never best friends?
Vivian actually lived with Ball while filming The Lucy Show and when Vivian left the series and returned she stayed with Ball.. According to Lucy's children, Vivian was like an aunt to them..
You do realize the characters were written to SHADE each other, in fact there are many episodes of The Lucy Show in which the Vivian character shades Lucy rather bitterly.. There are also episodes of I Love Lucy in which the Ethel character is dressed rather smart in a nice dress, shoes and pearls.

Like most fine comedy, "I Love Lucy" was funny because it touched on real-life problems and concerns. Which of us hasn't had a friend or relative whose idea of gift-giving is to get us something that the giver feels we SHOULD want, rather than anything we DO want? ("Frasier" exploited this idea to even better effect; one year he got his beer-and-sports father a silken English dressing gown for Christmas. Finally, in one episode, he said ruefully, "You know, Niles, I'm going to approach this Christmas differently, and get people things that THEY want." For him, this qualified as a revelation!).
It's also implicitly sad that neither Fred nor Lucy -- the two people who should know Ethel better than anyone else in the world -- can "read" her well enough to get her something she'd actually like. Between Fred's cheapness and Lucy's star-struck attraction to anything that suggests the high life ("smart dinner parties") to which she aspires, poor Ethel never stood a chance.
