PC Longplay [122] Doukutsu Monogatari - Cave Story

So this is my first longplay. I have beaten this game twice before years ago, but since I like the game, now I figured longplay might be worth it.
First I did a practice run, writing down the route, who I should talk to (and how many times) etc. I also practised the bosses a bit, to get the boss battles a bit smoother. Overall, I did try to make it pretty quick and smooth, sometimes maybe bordering on a speedrun, but speed wasn't the primary objective and I usually stop to show off enemies, cool things or just have fun.
The actual run involves some video editing. I played in one go until the jump at 1:39:36, where falling down will ruin everything. I did practise it a bit, but after such a long time, it kind of wears off, so I didn't make it on my first try. After that the no-editing run was ruined and I edited ~10 more times. Mainly for smoothness, dying was never a problem. Although, I guessed I wouldn't beat the boss battle at 1:59:54 anyway in a fast way and without getting hit, which is needed for the Alien Medal.
The game also has multiple endings. Bad, normal and true endings. I will show each ending. You should notice when the endings are shown at 2:16:11 and 3:11:12 from the silly VCR rewind effect.
And speaking of the true ending, I guess I just have to say a few words about the Sacred Grounds. :)
In case someone has been speedrunning it, I was NOT trying to be fast, for the most part. If I just flew through the place, you wouldn't see where enemies come from, etc. I was more simulating the first run people might have through it. Which, by the way, is actually much harder than semi-speedrunning, because you have to fight. Not to mention for the sake of the video, I had to clock a run where the story messages are shown. So after I studied the layout a bit, for every time I had to quit and reload to reset the messages. (The already shown messages aren't shown if you're retrying normally.)
So in the end, it was fun. I hope someone gets something out of it. Even though it's a bit long, it's quite varied. Most of it is actually story etc. Since I was playing through it pretty fast, I made a test video with cutscenes etc. cut out. The gameplay-only video ended up being only hour and a half vs. the three and half hours of the whole play.

it makes perfect sense that this was the game that made indie games matter because it is the absolute apotheosis of what indie games are supposed to be. absolutely as high-quality and substantial as any aaa game but it still has that uncompromised diy labor-of-love feel to it
@@familyguyfreemoviedownload8314 All the significant tools used for things like NPC actions, music composition/playback, tilemap storage, font display, etc, are all his own work, too. Big integer positions bit-shifted (cheap power-of-two division in this case) is an actual late-80's gamedev technique for conveying smooth and detailed motion without need for floating-point. The whole game is incredibly grassroots in how it's engineered, and I like to think that's part of why it gets so many good ports by fans.
So he started at 1999? Is this title the first indie game or something?

@@stolaire Undertale is heavily inspired by Cave Story, even in its name. All I know is that Undertale wouldn't be the same or even exist without Cave Story, because Toby Fox got into making games because of games like this.

The Nicalis translation is nowhere near _as good_ as the Aeon Genesis translation is.

Love the rewinding section when you went from the ending to the Hell section. Hell is insanely hard - I ended up cheating and used a hex editor to modify my heath to 255, and it still took me several attempts to beat !

having gone into this not knowing anything of it, not having heard anything about it, and having this be my first exposure to it, I was blown away.

Some fast paced gameplay mixed with a pretty good story. I like it.
I expected the player to get all three endings, but all in one sitting? Awesome!

I played the demo of the game on my old Nintendo Wii. I must say it was awesome and got me excited for the full version.

That is indeed the big joke in the scene. How the hell a robot in sleep mode is supposed to pull that off is left as an exercise to the viewer

this is fantastic
as good as it is that indie developers can actually get the pay and acclaim that they deserve (which this game deserves a lot of the credit for, by the way) i miss this era of indie games, when they were made by some random dude working in his bedroom and you just downloaded them off some jank website. the likes of shovel/hollow knight, celeste, undertale, omori, and many others are still great games, and in many ways improve on their predecessors, but the cave storys and yume nikkis of the world just have something they don’t imo. they’re a lot rougher around the edges, but that gives them a charm and , for lack of a better word, authenticity that i just don’t see in modern indie games

This game is great, the gameplay is fun.
The story is simple but I enjoyed anyway.
Cave story is amazing, but you know what sucks?? This game is going to loom its shadow over every new indie game developer who ever makes a platformer/metroid style game in the future... Everyone is going to compare it to cave story and say they copied cave story etc etc - now it will be much harder for other indie developers to be appreciated in the same way (Like how WoW kinda ruined the MMO market) =[

You have to talk to one of the Mimigas first. They will mention the dog, then you can pick it up. You've probably found that out by now tho...

no. you cant break the blocks in first cave without the polar star. also, you cant progress without defeating the bosses
