I saw a snow-covered mountain ridge I could land my kitfox aircraft on with my bush wheels. It was one of my worst decisions I had ever made in my kitfox bush plane. The landing was great! the takeoff was a different story. My 26 inch bush wheels were not big enough for the mushy snow. I needed snow skis or 31 bush wheels. I ended up leaving the airplane there overnight. hoping in the morning the snow would be frozen and hard enough for me to takeoff from the mountain top.
Thanks to my friend Tom Simko for flying in and landing on the mountain to rescue me!
Thanks to Sander Hadley for hauling my ass up the mountain to retrieve my kitfox aircraft.

love it!!!
Judgment is always retrospective, and good decisions are recognized by survivors..
If you live that is.
ha! Seems to work that way!! Sometimes our mistakes make good teachers! :)
Well, you fly planes. You don't have an unlimited number of tries ^^
imagine climbing a mountain, feeling all nature-like and as if there was no human civilasation and then suddenly there's a yellow plane
Imre 9999 I don’t know if it’s your idea that made me feel this way or the fact that you spelled civilization wrong
Stevan Blum yeah sorry bout that I’m gonna blame it on being swiss, we don’t have civilization here
@Someone why are you suggesting there is something wrong with being Muslim? It seems you are the racist.
Like the Farcry 4 missions hahah almost identical.
Probably a yellow air taxi
Apparently, as men, we aren't capable of fully understanding the complexities of "consequence" until we are almost 30.
I have a history of broken bones that supports this theory.....
Good analysis as proven by how much he thought out if he could land the plane; and apperantly, never even thought for a second if he could take off again.
Still 18, but apparently broken bones teaches me a lot
Me too
i still get into dumb things!! and i am 58!! but there not as life threatening now!!lol
I'm a little late at 33 and have just fully realized that this year. Truth

Found a way to beat it!!! Landed up by Peru B' something, their airfield is 10 miles long!!! I drove down it really fast, but couldn't take off...air too thin!! So....as I was on my computer, I simply plugged the plane to 11,000 feet, couldn't climb but flew out of there!!!
When I clicked on this video I expected a ton of clickbait and I'm surprised of how good and true the content is, loved it
click baitish, haha but he is cool enough to pull it off. The title over estimated the risk, based on the tracks present and packed snow.It was possibly know or planned in advance. However, good pilots mitigate risk so a planned risk scenario with safe exit for plane means the pilot is not insane. Very cool points made and lessons learned. Yes also entertaining. hahahaha IMO side note, he drop that landing on a dime, very cool.
Kit fox for sale, beautiful location, comes with tires, not skis.
lol 😂
Write a note with the smaller fonts: Get a crane to collect, or wait till the snow melts.

Lol yes!
$5000 scam? I think not!
Airplane for Sale: remote location. Another plane required to preview. No test rides w/o. Purchaser to provide own skis. Purchaser to provide own runway. Successful take-off is not guaranteed.
I love how stateside you just stick an ‘experimental’ sticker on it and it’s airworthy. So, with that, I’m loading up my leaf blower powered office chair and I’m going over the pond complete with experimental sticker. I’m good 👍
Which would be an ultralight, and wouldn't require any kind of license or training to fly.
Where exactly do they draw the line on that one?
@@FromNothingICome If you crash, they tend to frown on that.
Congratulations on not ending up in an NTSB report.
Yaofu Zhou True story.
Yeah, but at the cost of raising your profile with the FAA!
As staged as staged gets......
This time, keep doing stuff like that and he will be, You wash any pilot that was just in a serious accident be interviewed and he'll say I knew it was a mistake I know I shouldn't have done it or this or that you know you should he knew he should know ended there and he did it anyways and if he keeps doing crap like that it'll will be the demise of him
Yaofu Zhou Well, it wasn’t for lack of trying.
Wow I can’t get my friends to take me to the 7/11.

Hearing and reading shit like this definitely makes me think twice about marrying

Did this dude just land on the top of a snow covered mountain in an airplane with no skis.... wearing nothing but a sweatshirt?
yep
Wasn’t the brightest decision was it. He will know better next time.
😂
#FULL SEND!
He landed on a snow covered mountain full of snowmobile tracks!
Awesome story! Thanks for sharing. Guys doing stupid stuff but surviving to tell and laugh about it later...
During my 300-miler on the way to getting my pilots license (a few decades ago), I ended up having to land on a golf course as fuel state was low (real long story as to why) and I was not sure how much further it was to the airport (dead reckoning, no fancy nav equipment). I was flying over dense-packed suburbia in Maryland and did not want to have to deadstick if the engine quit. I wanted to at least have a shot at a go-around. Flew very low, burped throttle to make people figure out that I was in distress. Landed the Cessna 150. Legs felt like rubber as I got out... Adrenalin, no doubt.
Golf pro came out in a golf cart to greet me. I asked how close I was to the destination airport -- a mile or two!!! Damn. We got 5-gal of high test fuel (the golf pro drove me to gas station LOL), and I clambered up the wings and put it into the tanks. Went to the longest fairway, swung the tail as close as possible to the back of the fairway. There was a dogleg 80% of the way down the fairway, trees bordering the right-hand side, sandtrap and some trees at the left-hand side at the dogleg. Hot, but dry, day. Hard, dry grassy surface. Did my best short-field takeoff roll, cleared the obstacles. Gave a wing waggle of thanks. And continued my journey. (Except for getting stopped just as I was about to do my takeoff roll: "Did you just land on a golf course?" To be continued... )
I was ~16

was wondering about dropping tire pressure. any off-roader who hits sand knows that. soft tires would float over the snow. Great music!
@@michaelchaplin2248 But you need to land on the other end too, so not too soft right?
Contrary to some of those commenters; I believe you made an intelligent, calculated decision. It was not an unacceptable risk. You had several backup plans. Ultimately, you were successful - after a little hardship. Even had you not been, you were not risking life, only property.
The only way to avoid this sort of situation is to fly from point 'A' to point 'B', and always land on long / wide paved surfaces.
You handled the results of your decisions like a man. You gave us all a thrill in the process.
Great story. Great storytelling. Thank you.
@Individual 1 Agreed. He risked his own life, but worse, risked the lives of others. What if Tom hadn't stopped on his landing...or if the ridge had collapsed? Going after 'thrills' should only be done at your own risk, not others.
He said something about 'stupid'. He's right.
@Individual 1 - No, you missed the part about TWO planes flying off that peak within 12 hours. Who knows when all those tracks that were already there were laid down, but many people have obviously visited that spot; were already there and gone. Good precedent that it was do-able, and a Kit Fox is as close to a hang glider as an airplane gets.
The snow the next morning was more firm (as water will do when subjected to cold), as anticipated. That slope was so long and way downhill, that only an F-105 'Thud', couldn't have made it into the air. It was as close to a catapult launch as the author is ever likely to get.
Keep flying those ILS approaches. Everyone enjoys life in his/her own way.
Brilliant. At least the 60 year old (as always) bails out the young buck.
Big ups to Tom because not only did he pick you up and get you somewhere warm and safe he let bro use his ride and did everything he could to help 🔥🙌🙌

(for skis, that is!)
Reality, this guy would not even buy a 6 pack after getting his ass off this mountain.
procedure to take off at 8000ft:
1)find a cliff with 5000ft vertical drop
2)approach the cliff at full speed
3)drop 2000ft and wait to gather enough airspeed
4)pull slowly on the elevator
5)successful take off
You've been watching Avatar or 2012 too many times lol
There’s never a 5000ft drop when you want one.
That take off was absolutely wicked
Hello Jonas great video's on the tube. As a retired Navy pilot I would not have landed there except for an emergency. I flew C-130's into the south pole back in the 80's and even with ski's it was dicey at times. You are fortunate that a heavy wind didn't blow you off the mountain.
Glad you survived to make more video's.
Fly safe and you will live a long life!
Dude this was the best CZcams video I’ve watched in a long time. Thank you for that, so sick. You’re living an awesome life and even better you have good homies that genuinely care for you.
Awesome to hear this! Thanks!
This video is so damn American it's awesome. Between the flying around leaving your plane on a mountaintop, your friend that has a backdoor hangar and your other friend with the backcountry snowmobile. I wish we were this free in Europe sometimes. I'm glad I passed my PPL in the States!
I laughed at this comment only because I actually do have a friend that has an airstrip in his yard and a hangar, even though it's really not that common.
Believe me, it’s not like that all over the US.

I live in Texas, there are subdivisions here which center on runways, the houses face outward and their hangers face the runway. But the greater issue, you bet, regardless of the fake news, America is great, here we are free...!
As an old, 7500 hour, conservative pilot I was shaking my head, but by the time you got out of there I was enjoying it. Fly safe and enjoy life.
A bad situation, but I love that you approached it with calm, joy, and friends! Thank you for sharing this.

Cool adventure. Thanks for taking us along. Really nice kitfox, she's a beauty!
Only imagine if you didn't have a camera or a cell! Tom looked like he's been rescuing youngsters from those peaks for the last 50 years. =) Cheers to friends!
My guess is there was probably a lot of being rescued first. Wisdom is built on a foundation of bad decisions
That was amazing to watch. Clicked on all your links as well, I was that impressed.
Wow! Man I love this... like fantastic story and plot progression, killer video my guy! I think everyone needs a friend like Sander to be their hype man. You should shoot some stuff of Sander shredding on his sled.
I have a great life where I am, a good family, wife, daughter and grandchild, work is good and home is good too but I've never been so jealous of a guy with his plane stuck up a mountain. The way you guys get to live out in these places is amazing to me. I live on an island 9 miles long by 3 mile wide island and the ocean is our wilderness but your part of the world is truly beautiful beyond words.
This sounds like a case of ”the grass is greener on the other side.” Sounds like both of you have beautiful backyards and views. 👍
@@RyanReddell That's an excellent comment and you are correct.
I live in the mountain West and dream of an island.
That was freaking awesome, You deserve another subscriber over this so I volunteered and hit that button. 💯
Nice flying, that is a kit fox ,just fold the wings and it won't fly away while your gone. Also a 8 x 10 tarp will keep most of your wings free of frost when they are folded did that with my Avid many times.
Ray Fletcher it didn’t even cross my mind! 🤦♂️. Hopefully there won’t be a next time but if there is, I’ll remember the wings fold!
Thanks!
Face Palm - 🤦♂️
@Wroger Wroger It's big rocks up there, for sure! Ray:Folding the wings: yeah, that'll work, depending on how much fuel in the wing tanks. It was a real stable high pressure system, a very slim chance of any wind that night, no biggie. I had a Kitfox 1 and used that trick a few times in similar emergencies. But the 1 had a fuselage tank, (12 gallons as I recall) not just wing tanks, so that helped a bit in unplanned wing folding.
Very well done - the flying and the video!!! I just left a comment on another page - after watching 8 minutes of a female pilot (unedited with no narration or music) checking her seat belts every 20 seconds before taking off. I never got that far. You guys did a great job with video editing, music and live narration! Also with acting and an excellent footage in HQ. Amazing video about a plane stuck on a mountain. It's good to have real friends that help. Thanks Jonas. I'm glad nothing bad happened.
Boys, boy, boys - and that's not a criticism ! Stay young brothers. I'm watching this from the comfort of my home in the beautiful New Forest in the South of England UK. My local scenery is great in its own way but those snowy mountains - WOW. Great video, thanks
That's cool seeing such helpful people. This was more a video about friendship and adventures than just "doing plane stuff". Very nice 👍
The fact that you shared your bad decision so eloquently
the fact that you shared with us your recovery method
the fact that you shared with us all of your amazing friends who care enough about you and help you
all of that means more to me than anything else
of course, I'm sure you wish you had the turbo version of that road tax motor at that moment
I wonder if there was more than 75 hp, helping you at the time of take off
well done

Tom's like you can use my car and go anywhere you want but you sure as hell aint spendin the night at my place
This channel is awesome! Great videos! Thanks for sharing. I want to fly more than ever.
Youve got some great friends which means you must be of good character too. I enjoyed watching this adventure, thank you.
The lack of skis was probably not the only problem. At 8000' a normally aspirated engine is producing only a fraction of the power it can at sea level, even at freezing temperatures, not to mention the higher speeds required for takeoff. The down-slope is probably what saved the day.
@@matwest711 Dumb ass comment
Lower temperature makes air thicker which makes planes fly better.
That's what superchargers are for.
The other plane didn't have any issue coming over right away and then take off with two people
Skis, downslope take off ...
