sir, may I share my experience. the main stem that stops its growth above the trellis and grows again without any branches bear more fruits quickly. this is my observation. I am from Kerala (INDIA).Phosphorus treated sand is the best medium for fast rooting. your failure seems to be the positioning of the cutting(loose hold). keep it tight and erect in the plastic bag. ( treat the sand at least 7 days before planting) planting directly to the pole(concrete) in janu-feb will give you better result than transplanting rooted cuttings in rainy season . .I am a dragon grower for the last 10 years. I have been researching in this field.I can share with you if you are interested some interesting fact observed by me about dragon growing. . Annoyance if any caused by my interference is regretted

Its is the calus, a healing system of the plant that allows the plant to root faster than the fresh ones. That is why the fresh ones failed. Hello from México the land of cactus.

the experiment was good but it the dragon fruit cutting was inconsistent in terms of cambium maturity. Dragon fruit cutting that has a harder cambium tends to produce roots faster due to maturity factor. In this case, the cutting that is nearest to the mother plants tends to be more mature. The point is, you used 2 cuttings(3days earlier and newly cutted), then you cutted each cutting into 3 segments(bottom/nearest to the mother plant, middle part, and top/farthest from the mother plant), you should have paired all the cuttings that you have used,
-3 days cutted bottom/nearest to the mother plant vs. new cutted bottom/nearest to mother plant
-3 days cutted middle segment vs. new cutted middle segment
-3 days cutted top/farthest portion away from the mother plant vs. newly cutted top/farthest potion away from the mother plant
in this way, you have elimated the maturity factor of the cambiums.
this is to have a more detailed data. ☺

I think the difference may be so minimal that it will show very small difference. Dragon fruit are so easy to root. Limit moisture, dry 1 week and you are right: choose mature branches as young growing one barely will set roots. In my opinion use of antiseptic will prevent from rotting (the main problem)
