North Texas zoos observe animals during eclipse

- At the Dallas Zoo, animals were seen running just minutes before the solar eclipse. You can see a few giraffes and ostriches running along the grassy landscape. Over at the Fort Worth Zoo they were able to help with eclipse research and learn how animals are impacted.
And not one animal looked at it to burn their eyes.
save for the Humans!
smarter than some people 😅
You can look at it safely when it’s in totality. As soon as a bit of sun is exposed, you need the special glasses
😂😂😂😂
Animals can’t look up
Fact: guys with ponytails have a 50% chance of being a researcher
Not a fact but we get your point.
every guy with a ponytail has a super niche hobby that he REALLY wants you to ask him about.
I'll start growing my sons ponytails now😂
Or IT support.
Or work in zoos
My greyhound voluntarily got off his day bed and went to his night bed and to sleep. As the light returned I woke him up to go outside. He looked a little bewildered.
Awww 💕
Oh dear 🥰👋🇨🇦
Haha he thought it was bedtime how funny
Very interesting. My cat got crazy and began harassing me. She was sure that it was night time and that I had forgotten her dinner.
Lol that is such a cat thing to do
major cat concern right there lol
All those animals were embarrassed when the lights came back on.
That's what really happened.
😅❤
😂
Our chickens went to bed thinking it was night. There was a crow chilling beside us that looked like he was watching with us, stayed until it finished. Also we had a bunch of coyotes and dogs nearby howling and barking and then they all went quiet... It was cool but creepy. I wonder if they were reacting to people making noise or something. As soon as it ended birds started tweeting again the coyotes and dogs stopped, the chickens came back out and the cars on the streets started back up. Our own dog didn't seem to care :p and man did it get cold fast. Glad we bought some solar glasses for the occasion though
I remember that from the one we saw in Mexico many years ago. All the chickens went quiet.
My dogs mostly barked when they heard people in the distance talking about how dark it had gotten! 😂
Really? We were in the 90-95% totality area so pretty darkish, and my chickens didnt even go into the enclosed area (they free range the backyard) literally was waiting for them to go to their coop or Atleast for the roosters to start crowing when the sun came back....nothing. They continued to walk around
I like how the crow is smart enough to do what you guys were doing and leave. The animals know what was truly going on.
Animals definitely know. They are intune with nature
Here in central Missouri, I saw my local flock of barn swallows come in to roost. It was pretty funny. But it does show how much sunlight has an impact on animals!
My three cats didn't change their routines! CATS sleep like 12+ hours / day! 😂😂😂
Waking up a lazy cat for a moon
My cat also resumed her usual routine lol
innocent more like 20 hours a day and the other four is "hey where is my food?"
animals sleep, rape, murder and eat.
@@derek-pressI was gonna say 20+ hours of sleep
I watched my dog throughout this experience. My 4-year rescue KNEW something was going on. She went to bed to take a nap and then when the sky darkened she raised her head and looked toward the darkened sky. She was calm but she also knew something was different.
Our dog got anxious just before the peak of 98% totality, but it was nothing extreme.
@@janicesullivan8942same, mine looked like a gargoyle the whole time. I wonder how they were feeling 🤔
My dog was anxious as well and once we went back inside after totality she went to bed.
my dog knew something was wrong I could see fear in her eyes. I put her inside the car sort of safeplace
If they were calm it’s because you were calm. Dogs often look for cues from their humans to see if they need to worry
Thanks for filming this. Oddly, not many news outlets covered this important aspect from today’s eclipse.
It is my favorite part!!!
Many news outlets covered the animal aspect of this eclipse...
Problem is, most of the outlets only " talked" about what to expect, and/or DESCRIBED the animals' reactions during the eclipse, BUT almost all of their videos so far - and this video is no different - didn't SHOW videos OF the animals' reactions at ALL...
...They either showed the animals before/after totality - but not DURING totality...
...or they focused on the HUMANS INSTEAD of the animals during totality.
This video didn't show one animal during the tiny 2 minute window of totality - it showed the humans watching the sky...
...but this video is SUPPOSED to be about how animals OTHER than humans, reacted.
@@Bunkerdwarfputinexactly! Came to say this
My local zoo covered the eclipse, and they found that only the birds had any reaction; they started roosting, like they would before going to sleep. I think if the darkness lasted longer, there might have been other animal reactions. I was a bit disappointed.
This was observed decades ago in Australia 😂
Moon and Sun: Hey animals, it is just a prank
😆
Saw the 2017 eclipse on the Oregon coast in Lincoln City, the sea lion colony on Salishan beach went from their super noisy barking and belching to absolute silence and back to full raucous in 3 minutes.
My son drove us to eastern Missouri and there were several dogs in the area who seemed to be unaffected by the eclipse. Being in the path of totality was awesome and I did notice that the Corona was fuller than it was in 2017. I'm glad I got to see this one as I'll be 87 when the next one comes around.
I was out hiking in the woods. Trees remained standing, rocks didn't move, squirrels were chomping on pine cones, birds chirping, deer grazing. It's a new day, SOS.
@@andreacalkins5189 I hope you have submitted your observations to the research team.
@@thereoncewasalimerickwriter It doesn't mean anything, same ordeal different day. There's nothing new under the sun. People lost their minds over hype. PS Do=id antyone see the comet that was suppose to hit the sun? Not a word about it.
@@andreacalkins5189True lol, a lady stabbed her boyfriend to death and threw her baby and 9 year old child into a highway, killing the baby and later herself.
Some people need to be locked off of any kind of social media.
My dog, a black lab, suddenly grew apprehensive. Usually if I am out in yard she is delighted but suddenly when totality hit she ran up onto covered porch and began scratching at the door begging to go inside. She would not leave porch, hesitantly peeking out occasionally. She remained glued to door till I let her in. Love Fort Worth Zoo. Went there for years raising my sons.
The only creatures bugging out about the eclipse were humans.
For real and it’s not anything extraordinary. It’s just the moon crossing path with the sun since they move around. Yet we had humans howling others screaming and crying. Others cheering. Animals were probably like these ppl are too much. Then you have the superstitious kind. Putting up all kinds of things in the house. Others lightning candles and putting on oil and what not. It’s just a moon phase. Nothing more.
@@jdos5643 Oh there's something you left out my friend, THEY VOTE!
@@andreacalkins5189 I don’t vote sorry.
And most humans are afraid of everything
@@jdos5643 I'm sitting this one out too. God will put into power whom he chooses.
I took my dog for a walk when totality hit. While I was looking up, she took a dump on the neighbor's lawn. Obviously, she wasn't "awed".
she must have been scared
At least one of you were smart enough to not look at it.
@piratecalypso132 🤣🤣😭
We all show awe in different ways.
I love that your dog showed the universe who's boss 😅
I'm in central N.C.
When the eclipse had begun, I looked out my window and saw two squirrels in my backyard standing upright just looking toward the west (where the sun was).
They stayed, standing upright, for a good two minutes.
If was curious to me.
It really made me think that they were sensing the decreasing sunlight.
They just stood there on their hind legs, looking up.
Of course, by the time I reached for my camera, they had disappeared.
But, it was hilarious to see.
Two squirrels enjoying the eclipse. 😊
😂 that's so awesome 🐿️
My 2yo looked around a minute or so before totality at how dark it was and said “moon!”
It was amazing
He's slow
Wow! That must have been surprising!
Here in indiana, there were mourning doves starting to roost before it started.
I'm also in Indiana. I watched from a very rural area. There was no change in behavior here. We made sure to pay attention to before, during, and after.
@@BionicMilkaholic Maybe it was that I am in town and the birds were in the tree that was near ne? When I came back in my home, my parakeets were cuddled next to each other, asleep.
I’m in Indianapolis. Watched from my back yard. The birds went silent for totality.
@@tctcllc6949 Thank you, yes they did, Grant County here.
I noticed the birds were chirping louder after it was over like it was newly morning , but our household pets didn’t react. I live in clark county indiana. 😊
Many cows in Waxahachie, TX stayed in a close heard during totality, they definitely had a ball today.
As someone who drove from Houston, Texas, to Temple and eventually Killeen, and then back to Houston, having passed like 57 ranches, I can confirm this is accurate for all cows in the path of totality.
It rained later that same day and THAT explains the behavior.
My dog got indignant over dinner being late when it started to get dark.
😂😂😂❤
Animals act up before earthquakes too.
Animals actions before earthquakes are much more reliable and observable, they do feel the frequency changes and react. I had a cat that was very sensitive to tremors while living in CA, and a dog that alerted to a quake felt in NC just before I felt it.
My cats hissed and my dogs howled. I put them on my lap and told them: everything's OK.
Don't be scared.😊
The birdies were chirping and flying erratically
One of my dogs was totally freaked out during the entire eclipse process. After it was over, he was perfectly calm again.
Our cat and dog did too. Perhaps they were a bit influenced by going in and out with the two of us to see it in real time and watching it on the tv for two hours. Scientific observation needs to account for variables. I honestly don’t think 4- minutes is going to affect most animal’s behavior that much.
@@zuzuspetals9281well, that’s what they wanted to know. And there is only one way to find that out. And the cost of that project was pretty cheap. It’s intellectual curiosity, just like what inspires a lot of animal research.
We had a 95+/~% coverage of the eclipse in middle Tennessee. My neighbor has chickens-- their behavior was funny when it became darker outside than usual--they started putting themselves up for the day-but we noticed they were all going in the wrong cages. She has 3 different types of chickens, they are kept in 3 separate coops. It was cute to see them all head to incorrect coops. The different type chickens were sticking with the same coop mates, but they all switched coops. Animals are the best! And we love watching their behavior all the time.
lol his answer was literally “there’s no reason, we just want to do it”
Wow, glad we did all that research to find out when it gets dark animals start their night time routines.
I know , unbelievable , I was stunned..... and to think none of them bought the eclipse glasses off Amazon.
in other word's nothing happened out of the ordinary
My cat jumped into my lap during the eclipse... he doesn't do that often.
Life's amazing!
So when it got dark the animals thought it was evening...shocker!!!
Pay those researchers big bucks!
That'd suck for some prey animals though 😂 imagine thinking your safe and suddenly predators start waking up thinking it's night
Im more curious on how wild animals not institutionalized by years of captivity reacted to the eclipse.
Right??
It's so infrequent animals probably don't have a instinctive response. It may affect birds more that land animals because it suddenly gets dark while they are flying, the Flamingos marching is interesting, the rest wandering back to the spot they go when the sun goes down is also interesting but I guess animals in a Zoo would have a routine, especially if it deals with food.
The Bipedal's migrated from north and south to get in the path of the shadow and look up.
100% “damn that was a short day”
2 min later: “damn that was a short night
@@fungdark8270 I looked up if Flamencos gather before a storm, thinking about the cooler air coming with the shadow, and they do, and.... a group of Flamenco's is called a Flamboyance!
The animals observed to change routine the most were humans.
My cats slept.
Mine did too.
Same.
My 3 cats snoozed as usual!
Mine have been crazier than usual these past 2 days 🤷🏻♀️ I wasn't in the "totality" part, but it still got kinda dark here as if a big storm was coming (it was cloudy today)
@@alexialira3839 Yes, same here in San Diego, CA for Me, and colder, too! 🤷
You can see so many people without protective glasses looking up as well. Insane. Risking permanent eye damage.
That increases blindness for the low IQ population!
YOLO! You only look once lol
teens nearby me were doing that, saying "see, you can look at the sun"... sigh...
@@sparra3819 Darwinism in all its glory.
Why do all of the media sound like game show hosts?
Because they're all actors, not journalists.
Purely there for your entertainment.
I swear they're getting worse. Their enunciation and cadence sounds silly to me.
Paid actors
@@kimberlysevastyanenko3798 It does sound very annoying, so phony, so fake, so up their own arse.
The animals were paid actors
Agreed fake news
😂😂😂
🤣🤦🏻♀️🤣🤦🏻♀️🤣
just Like Donald Trump. He acts like a Billionaire but in reality is a BINO that has no money😮
Such small enclosures for the large animals. 👎
Oh look. Animals were running around. How extraordinary
Were turtles really the right choice for a 4 minute occurrence 😂 but they are so cute!❤🐢🐌
ikr, but it was fascinating watching them race about the yard in utter confusion
I saw a woman heading down to the creek with a fishing pole just before the eclipse. Guess she was researching whether the fish would bite during it.
I bet they did.
On Seneca Lake, Ny, the loons were calling right before. The smaller birds in the trees on the shoreline were really chirping right before, very quiet during, and especially chirping after it was bright again.
During last years annular eclipse, our neigbors 3 dogs howled the entire 2 minutes.
we watched these animals for 4 mins during the eclipse and nothin happened we didnt already know they did ...IT WAS AMAZING
Aw, look at the terrified animals run for their lives. Such a heartwarming news story!
It was the galloping tortoises that got to me
One of my dogs was extremely agitated at the start of the eclipse, running from room to room and trying to get my attention.
He porbably needed to take a shit its not that complicated.
The roosters in my neighborhood came out and ruined the silence. It was interesting to see/hear though.
Where I live almost all my neighbors have roosters and I always hear them around the clock all the time both day and night. They weren't loud or any different during the eclipse than usual. If anything they were probably more quiet.
@TLA-ml2lg Interesting. I live in town, and one of my neighbors has roosters--don't ask, I think it's weird too. Anyway, they only make noise at night--it's so annoying! During the eclipse, they were loud as can be. It was truly something.
The twilight that resulted as the eclipse reached maximum was so eerie -- unlike any sunset I've ever witnessed. And it got real quiet outside. Definitely a unique experience for me.
This was a beautiful event 🌑🦁🦍, Great video 👍👍
We were at the indianapolis zoo and loved it! It was so neat!
I have only experienced a partial solar eclipse in the late 90's, had a budgie back then and he climbed on his roost when it suddenly got darker. As for me, I instinctively began to blink. Seemed as if someone had dimmed the Sun a bit
Fascinating! Thanks.
Why are we looking at images of people taking pictures of the eclipse if this video is about the animals?
And here I thought all the animals went nuts with solar eclipse or so I've been told.
I remember my science teacher telling us that b4 any natural disasters animals are the 1st one to response. It's very true in my observation. For that reason many keep dog & cats as pets. They're the 1st to respond to danger, especially b4 tsunami.
That’s very interesting,
Beautiful
Looks like summer in Texas. Here in Alberta they're predicting snow near the weekend! 😉
Thanks 4 this
"So no wolves were howling , it wasn't nothing/something crazy like that ..."
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Soo crazy, Ive literally never heard of such a feat from a wolf !!!
Imagine one howling ...Crazy I tell ya!
For the human species it's a time of wonder to see and experience the eclipse...for the animals it's more like "tea/naptime" and those giraffes were more like "Run to the Hills" and "We don't like this!".
My lab and Akita went crazy playing run around right before, when it went dark they calmed down and looked around, when it got bright again you could see complete confusion on my Akitas face!!! ❤
Animals/Birds are naturally genius and don't need any schooling. They sense changes in Mother nature much before humans and take all measures to seek safeguard. They have all senses highly active. Gratitude to mother nature ❤🙏
Oh wow it got super dark out there! That's so cool!
Good storytelling
When it was starting my macaw was looking out both windows and was growling a ton. Then started screaming her head off. I owned this scarlet macaw named Bing 25 years she is very quiet so i was alarmed just watching her during the eclipse. 🐦 🌚😮
All my farm animals started freaking out a couple minutes before and during till about a couple mins after!!
That’s crazy cause the first time I witnessed this I was a kid and we were on a field trip at the zoo in okc
And this time I was at work but I noticed and so did my dad at home all the birds were on the grass instead of the trees and our dogs kept looking around the back yard like they was trying to find something but they couldn’t
So more mouth no footage? Genius.
Im in New Brunswick canada where eclipse was really good to see. I noticed a fly land on my window during eclipse😅 but i didnt have glasses so i faced north and looked out window and there were streaks of light streaking across the grass . Was so cool
My dogs mostly wanted to hang out with my dad and I in the front yard during the eclipse. They only barked when we heard the neighbors talking about how dark it had gotten!
Here in Diné Nation. Horses, sheep cows and birds were silent. I was feeding the birds and every bird was there in silence bowing heads. My family was not talking because we know this is a day of mourning. It's a day when The moon and The Sun will connect to the Earth in privacy and we show sympathy in silence.
I was outside near Gallup NM it was chilly seeing the Mesa go from light to visual green n blue. Science is weird.
I was in the park and the Deer came out of no where looking confused 😮❤
And none of them burned their eyes out!! 🫥😂😂😂🤷♀️
Our family cats, those who were in the back yard, went into the taller grasses snuggling down within sight of each other for a long while. We had 90+% coverage.
Very interesting. ✨🙏
She is way too cheery.
I love animals ❤❤❤
It makes sense that animals go into a nocturnal routine during the Totality of the Eclipse.
Very interesting ❤️
Was in Indiana. A small blackbird roosted next to me as the eclipse got close to totality. It repetitively looked at me and then up at the sun like “Are you seeing this!?!?”
Thankfully it only did this for a few minutes. I was worried about its eyes.
The frogs and crickets came out during the eclipse and started singing but then when the eclipse was over they were confused like "Huh? What?!? Why??? The betrayal!" 😮😢
My daughter’s house in Western New York is surrounded by land that was designated as a bird sanctuary. When it started to get dark, all the birds in the trees we could see flew away, almost in unison. Then 3 minutes later, when it lightened up again, all the birds came flying back in. The ducks in the lake just stayed there. Her dog got up from the porch outside where we were all sitting and went in the house and got in his bed. lol
❤Nature is Amazing
Birds were flying where I was at and one flew over my head onto a power line. I have a video of me comforting it. It was like the animals looked to humans for comfort. We were right about midline of totality. Then, a rooster crowed in town when the sun came back out. I've never heard this rooster lol 😂.
Those animals were saying, 'Was that the freakin' shortest day, or what?!?' 😄
Where is at least a picture of matching animals?
It’s quite incredible how far we’ve come in spite of having male humans in charge.
When the night only lasts 3 minutes...
"The heck was this!?" - animals
My cat's were nuts 🎉
Mine too..just the one
All of mine were. I'm down to two now. They've all been murdered.😢
I remember an eclipse when I was a kid in the 70s in our chickens headed for The henhouse to go to bed.
If something serious were happening animals would alert before humans because they are more connected to the rythms of the earth.
"Animals were seen running" - Wow. Those giant tortoises were really burning rubber.
My son was at his cabin in the woods out on his pontoon boat and he said the owls went off right on time.
OMG! You've got to be kidding me.
The animals looking at the humans thinking "What are these idiots doing now?"
Where I was it was overcast; 100% cloud coverage in every direction. But all the birds stated cawing like "Honey, GET YO ASS OVER HERE, NOW!"
What was interesting was they started that evening group huddle behavior 10 minutes _before_ the sky got visibly darker. Total cloud coverage, it was already a gloomy dark day; but something about them UVs must've triggered their night response way before us humans could notice any darkening.
Wife told me that five miles apart on interstate 55 Missouri she saw two large wild turkeys walking near the highway??
zoo animals: eating, pooping, sleeping
zoo animals during eclipse: eating, pooping, sleeping
You'd think this was the first time a solar eclipse has been observed. 😂 What insight!
*animals running normally*: normal thing
*animals running during eclipse*: Oh my god!! This is amazing!! Look at that!!
