- Kicking off a new series of videos called Gunpla Quick-Fix! As the name implies, these videos will be centered on quick things that you can do for specific kits to improve their looks!
In this first installment we're painting some details on the HG Gundam Barbatos. This is a quick and simple way to make your kit look a lot better than using the stickers!

Thanks for watching!
I don't understand why more people don't hand-paint gunpla sure it takes a while, but I find it to be a much more rewarding experience if done right. Great video!
I think because a lot of people prefer convenience. I mean, they're model kits that don't require glue, that's already gonna attract a "lazier" audience. I speak from experience, hell I just used a red gundam marker on the shoulders and knees of this kit, out of laziness and unwillingness to sit myself down and carefully place 8 thin stickers.
Thanks for the tutorial! Almost 2 years of just snap building, using stickers and gundam markers and I'm more than ready to move on to painting. I am officially sick or stickers. It wasn't even the HG G-Self that broke me but the Barbatos and those nasty stickers on the legs and shoulders (mine constantly peal and curl).
Yeah man! Get some paints and a brush!
"I'm by no means any sort of expert". Please, don't be so modest. Great work as always, thank you for sharing!
Na he is being honest. When you watch the experts it's insane
Hey Zack, I just want to say, as an aspiring gunpla modeler, I really admire your technique, builds and the way you try learning as you go. I have seen you respond to many critical comments, even rude ones with respect and learn from what they are saying. So thank you for making the gunpla community so friendly to newcomers and taking critique from others and passing it on to the beginners like myself.
Rurush999 my pleasure man! Glad you enjoy my content!
Very interesting video for me Zach, your approach is so different to how we do it at Hobby Japan but you are SO right, there are so many ways to come to a great finish and despite being wrapped around a camera, I think you did a fantastic job. Thanks for showing this and will check out more of your vids. Cheers, Linc!
I usually use an eraser when I want to cheat on cleaning excess paint. It works amazingly on accent wash.
Very helpful video. Looking forward to future episodes.
Maybe do a tutorial about top coats in the future?
Thanks for the tips again! Really appreciate the effort you are putting in these videos as always!
DUDE you dont need to excuse everything you do, just do it, if someone else say something fuck it!
You're right, lol
not a better word said there is no right or wrong easy or hard way of painting or modeling some people don't habe the funds to dive into products but want to just add their input into a model kit just go for it.. trust me I'm documenting a gundam unicorn perfect grade build from scratch on my channel.
@Salvador Judah that sounds hella fake
Thanks Zach!!! Looking forward to this video series!
Hey Zaku, just a bit of critique. I know you're aiming this at total beginners and you've stated where people should not use the ideas you've shown. But regardless people are going to use them and they are going to end up acquiring bad technique.
Paints should always be thinned unless pre-thinned, especially enamels with their already considerable drying time. This is even more important when you're trying to paint in recessed details, as thinning the paint makes it easier to remove if you make mistakes. Thinner paint also flows better into the recesses meaning you need less paint overall, you make fewer mistakes as the paint can flow into the edges and doesn't flood your details leaving you with an easier clean up and crisper detail.
As for scraping the paint off with a knife, you'd be able to wipe the paint away in the same way as your panel wash had you thinned. Anyone scraping paint off like that is going to wish they hadn't if they decide to come back and paint the whole kit later as many beginners do once they step up to spray cans and airbrushing. Sanding those scratches out will be a complete pain especially on a rounded surface.
Anyway, just a bit of friendly feedback, wishing you all the best bro!
Fair critique, and definitely expected. I'm definitely still learning myself and I'll be sure to share that information in a future episode! Thanks~
+ZakuAurelius No worries man, hope I didn't come across as too harsh.
+TheMixEmperor No, not at all! You make a great point, and that's one thing I always worry about whenever giving any advice. With the amount of viewers I have it's important to be responsible and give proper advice to people. I try to do so as much as I can. And when people ask me questions about stuff I don't know I straight up tell them, sorry I don't know about that. In the case of this video, this is just how I've done things before and they worked out alright, but I wouldn't assert anything I do to be totally fool-proof, best way, no need for improvement. We've always gotta be learning more, right? So I appreciate the feedback!
TheMixEmperor i just wouldn't scrape it because its ear rape
ugh how complicated
This was a great video, I hope you do more videos like this one. I am a beginner and I like the quick and dirty tips like these that can lead into better techniques as I get more comfortable.
Thanks for the video! I appreciate you making these as I'm just getting into this as a hobby!
Thanks ,Zaku! A little invesment in the washes etc is going to pay dividends to the aethstetics with such ease and also transcends to alot of other model making disciplines.
Great primer to get the ball rolling.
Love the new series!! please cover painting larger surfaces with a brush like doing 2-tone, 'Real Grade' panels on HG kits or old MGs :))
I've been looking for a beginners tutorial on detail painting. you did an amazing job with this series. THANK YOU ZAK!!!
you're welcome!
omg im building a barbatos soon this is exactly what I needed, thank you so much!
For IBO kits, I basically inform my purchases by looking at your videos. They are very comprehensive. Keep it up, great job man.
thanks!
Looking back there's a lot stuff here that could be done better, just incase someone is watching this in the time I'm commenting
-it's wiser to buy sable brushes with nice like size 3 or 5 the bigger brush will hold paint hold more paint and the nice tip will make you draw thin pen like lines
Enamel paint is essentially oil paint, if you thin it with mineral spirits or enamel thinner, the paint will flow better snd eill require less clesn up and less clumps in the finished model.
Not that I'm picking on a 3 year old video but many people enter the hobby everyday so I'd rather have this info out there in case, I will adnit my heart sank lookin at that poor brush
I watched your video after the stickers of my barbatos started to fall off. This vid was very helpfull and makes the kit 100 times better than the stickers could ever do.
I learn a lot in this Video... I collect many gunpla but never painted them.. so thanks to this video I can get started and try to paint them... Thanks much and thumbs up!
zack: okay now im gonna talk about something controversial *whips out exacto knife*
me: oh god no
zack-sama: *starts to scrape off the excess paint with the knife*
me: NOOOO WHY ZACK SAMA? I TRUSTED YOU. OH GOD WHEN WILL THIS AGONY ENDDDDD
zack-senpai: *shows off the left side of the shoulder armor thats been scraped and then right saying how it works*
me: oh wow that was extremely simple and fast, guess ill need to try that.
hahahah
+Myrolz He did mention a long time ago that he actually scrapped old kits to make the plastic matte instead of glossy!
Imagine what that looked like.
I just use a tooth stick, i also use tooth stick to do panel lines
I was literally cringing, holding my face, and under my breath saying "Why, why wwwhhhyyyyyyy???"
The other way to do this (when using oil or solvent-based enamel paints) is to use wet/dry sanding materials such as emery paper or sanding pads. Wait until the paint is fully dry (1 week is good) and use plenty of water.
The technique for scraping the excess paint is called "adzing" and uses the back of the blade, which has a square edge that will remove less material and won't dull the cutting edge. Great for seam line removal also.
Thanks for the video this helped a lot. And the grey looks 100 times better then black for panel lining.
This actually helped out so much, thank you!!
zakuaurelius: starting a new series
also zakuaurelis: *sweating because having to choose a new intro song
😰
Awesome video thanks for the tips this makes going into painting seem less daunting
+ZakuAurelius how do you do panel lining on top of the painted part?
if I want to clean / tidy up the panel line using thinner, I am afraid that the thinner will mess the painted part underneath.
art knifes are good for trimming and scratching off pain in hard to get spots
but for the shoulder and knee details, one thing i tried with cleaning up, and works, is to use [gunpla marker remover+tissue+stick(long toothpick, the grip end of your art knife, a pen lying around, etc.)]
Great video, very clear instructions. Thank - you.
Love this series. 😀
i want more of this series this is helpful!!
Excellent tutorial! and one of the best kits out there ;D
+devaex Thanks!
ok so i saw this years ago but only got around to doing it today.
Fun alternate option for cleaning up the enamel paint that went outside the lines, I found that if you wait a few minutes for it to dry a little but not too much, you can scratch it off with a wooden toothpick pretty cleanly without marring the plastic at all.
i was just thinking about painting yesterday. was thinking of painiting a few weapons that my gundams dont use, just for the practice. great vid.
Thanks!
Does anybody know where I can find the official colors for the Barbatos translated to english? Planning to paint one of these as my first painted kit, but am unable to find the official colors, and dont just want to "eyeball it".
lighter fluid can also be an alternative to thinner for cleaning.
excellent content. i am brush painting my gusion rebake with acrylic. good guide for people who don't have air brush
For the power sighns I use a sanding block to remove the excess paint and it works like a charm
So question. I over did my panel lines on my rg destiny. I did it in sharpie and its a little too much. Is there anything i can do to get all the sharpie off so i can try again with panel wash? Also its the side of the knees im refering to
this is just what i wanted to see :D i'll try this techniques thanks :)
is testor gloss enamel paint set are safe to use in gunpla? if i top coated with clear flat matte, can i get the matte finished?
I really wanted that chrome paint but sadly couldnt find any locally is there any alternative aside from sharpie i could use?
Oh wow! thank you for this video, helped me a lot
I have a Noob question but need some answers pls...
Can I use a gundam marker after I airbrush a kit? I tried and it doesnt work so well. I'm just trying to get some of the fine detail done. Should I do it after the top coat? Thank in advance for your response!
Nice vid! I think i'm gonna start painting my old gunpla for experiments
Cant wait for the next one
So far I've been only using gundam markers and topcoats on my kits. I hope to try using paints to detail so this is a great tutorial.
Great tutorial video !
hope another great tutorial video like this in the future !
+Stefanus Rudy Will do! Thanks!
Always informative and useful - I appreciate you sir.
Thanks!
i want to use tamiya panel line accent color to panel line some of my kits, but i have read that enamel paint can damage the plastic (make it brittle and crack). So is it ok to use the line accent color on bare plastic or should i apply a clear coat on the kit first?
what pin did u use to put the detail on the gundam mate ?
Hi there, very good video as guide for me as im a beginner at this..a question, some says that before applying enamel base paint if we are going to paint the whole gundam, to make sure to use enamel over lacquer primer, but will it be okay if i do enamel over acrylic primer? as example vallejo primer?
im kinda new into gunpla im planning to paint my barbatos lupus and lupus rex. what would be the recommended ratio part for the paint and thinners?
jay patawaran until it has a milk-ish consistency
Any tips on how to keep those lining channels from getting filled in during the paint priming stage? My hand is nowhere near as steady as yours unfortunately :(
Can I use acrylic paints used for those portrait art for detailing?
Does anyone know what kind of paint I should use for the blue visor of the MG Tallgeese?
ty, this has been really helpful. hope you continue the tutorial on detailing.
+baybeeamu You're welcome!
Nice tutorial, bro. Usually, I prefer spraypainting using cans, but this is actually pretty neat for beginners. And your finished product looked amazing just with the straight paint apps. I dunno if you topcoated it but, still, very good job.
can you make a video tutorial where you customize the color scheme of your gunpla by hand painting? (sry for my english)
Great video, very helpful! Thanks
What keeps the paint that you want to stay on from coming off when your using the thinner to remove the excess paint? Jw I'm just starting to get into painting my gunpla.
thank for this. im planning on hand painting details myself.
I would like to paint my gunpla using gundam markers . Do you know what kind of thinner to use on it?
nice vid bro! love put hand painted details in my Gunplas.
Where can I find the big bottles of tamiya paint because all i ever see on Amazon are the small ones
love your work keep going
How do you clean your brush and with what after you use it ??
For the shoulder part, it was red paint on to the grooves, and thinner to remove excess paint, what is i have painted a layer of white base paint on the whole shoulder in the first place? Will cleaning up the red mess ruin my base color (white) as well? Or do you advise to topcoat the white first before starting on the red details?
Ii was thinking of getting panel line accents and enamel paint but are they toxic?
I like this. I’m a beginner and I need a lot of help so I appreciate this
Enjoyed this. 👍
Quick question, is tamiya safe after it drys? like if i have a custom figure laying around and my little cousin comes over and plays with it is it safe for him or her to do so?
a question. How to get gray color in the scratch buiding? I've seen it a lot on custom models with pla plate, if the model its painted how can separate de colors? please help me
Whoooooah cool, at first im not interested at all to paint gunpla, now i wanna try iit
Would u use primer for painting small areas like that?
Where can u get those paints
How'd u clean up the smears after you used thinner?
Hey where did u get that scale hanger ?
Can you do this on acrylic airbrushed model ? I mean the cleaning part with enamel thinner wont destroy the surrounding acrylic paint ?
i saw someone doing somethibg similar to scraping your knife on the plastic to clear the paint. they used a nail filer to scrap off the paint. would that be fine to do?
Hi! Is the tamiya lacquer thinner will do the same job as the x20? will it destroy the gundam plastic? ty
What am I suppose to do if I'm painting something big like the Barbatos 6th form's wrench mace, can I use a brush or is that not recommended.
is ti okay to spray top coat after using enamel paint ?
Where did you get the background set thing?
yesss please do more of this!
+rayster02 Will do!
So what ratio do you usually use for thinning?
Do you know what kind of paint is in the gundam markers? Also, would you have to thin the paint extracted from the markers? Also what's a good way to clean a brush you plan to use multiple colors with?
ZACK I HAVE A QUESTION CAN WE NOT USE TOOLS FOR CUTTING.
You use postit notes as pallets! That's a great idea, it doesn't move and it's easy. I'm gonna do that
thanks for the tips, awesome video subbed
Is there a good alternative for a gundam panel liner?
Masking job for the black on the thigh would have been great. Awesome video. Looking forward to more. .
we need more episodes of this series
Excellent tutorial.
Thanks ZA, great video
Do you have a list of the say top 10 enamels to have in your collection? for the detail stuff
I currently have
All 3 of the accent panel liners
Red
Chrome silver
Gold Leaf
Gunmetal
Green
sky grey
What type of top coat would you use?
YES PLEASE! Thanks a lot for this! Really like it :))
You're welcome!
What grush did you use
can i ask you something, what the different between oil based marker and water based ? tq
for acrylics I usually mix a metallic with whatever color, does that not work for enamel?
