The Age of Superhumans - Gene Editing Through CRISPR & AI

  • Superhumans are coming! Various technological advances in the field of medicine through AI and CRISPR are going to radically alter our understanding of what it means to be human. AI and Crispr technology have been making revolutionary changes to the field of medicine. Artificial intelligence is being applied in identification of harmful genes and treatment of disease.
Multiple new gene editing technologies in addition to artificial intelligence will cause major changes in healthcare.
The gene-editing tool CRISPR, short for clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, could help us to reprogram life. It gives scientists more power and precision than they have ever had to alter human DNA.
Could it be conceivable that at one point in the future we could increase the average IQ of the population?
CRISPR technology in the future could enable efficient and affordable treatment of many diseases. It will be also probably used to enhance our intelligence.
CRISPR was originally designed as a technique for editing the DNA of living organisms, but its uses and capabilities have expanded substantially. It is now used widely in biomedical research, including research into human genetics. One of the main issues concerning technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9 is accuracy and safety, as mistakes can have significant and dangerous consequences when it comes to an individual’s genome.
David Sinclair explains the mind boggling breakthroughs of medicine in recent times.
The possibility of altering the sequences of genes and correcting the mistakes that were previously irreversible opens many new possibilities for research. Nevertheless, for now, genetic editing technology is still incapable of making the hundreds of changes presumably necessary to make a superintelligent human. But the corresponding ethical issues deserve serious attention before these capabilities become a reality.

@@deepmind5318 A Neural Network in some ways mirrors the connections within the Human brain. There are many things we don't understand about the brain for sure. But then again AI has already advanced to the point that they are calling it a black box. A question goes in and an answer comes out. How it arrived at this answer remains a mystery because no one 'programmed' in a program to solve the problem. The AI over time figured out how to solve such problems all on its own. This may not, and probably isn't, Consciousness yet but it IS lights years beyond old programming structures like the main one of IF this happens THEN do this ELSE do this. Called IF THEN or IF THEN ELSE.
With rapid advances in computer hardware and AI the line between human consciousness and if an AI is truly conscious will be so blurred it will appear to be so. AI's have already beat the Turing Test.

    @johanlarsson9805 Před 3 lety +5

I've been thinking about using neural nets for protein folding on and off for 10 years. When CRISPER came along I was doing lab work with restriction enzymes and realized the potential straight away. Up until now we could create any sequence we wanted and place it anywhere in the genome. But novel design was still hard, so it always a question of altering what was there, or copy something from somewhere else. I'm also a programmer, and I recognize this phase, its the "stack overflow"-phase. We could identify existing, already working solutions, and reuse them and maybe tweak them slightly.
AlphaFold2 marks a new era. Now we can program for real. We will still reference stack-overflow from time to time, but we can now frite entirely new things from scratch as well and see how they fold. That way we know if they are a solution or not.

you're absolutely right there's there's an enormous amount of excitement um in immunotherapy
    42:22
um there's currently three approaches that i can see where mrna therapeutics
    42:27
is is being used to try to harness the body's immune system to combat cancer
    42:32
one is to deliver an mrna molecule that will teach the body
    42:38
to make antibodies against a protein that is mutated frequently mutated in a cancer in certain cancers
    42:45
and so this would essentially result in in the body's immune system seeing that tumor
    42:52
cell as foreign seeking it out killing it and eliminating it so so that's one approaches that's being investigated
    42:59
the other one is it's it's it's it's emerged that tumors will will often
    43:05
create a dysfunctional micro environment which helps them evade the body's immune
    43:11
system so they sort of build a shield to protect them against our immune system and so one can deliver
    43:19
protein molecules via mrna to disable the shield and now make the tumor
    43:24
visible to the immune system and that's that's that's the current
    43:29
path that's that's being tested in clinical trials through the mrna therapeutic platform the third way i can
    43:36
see is many people i'm sure many of your listeners have have heard of car t cell
    43:42
technology it's a technology where one isolates immune cells from the body
    43:49
manipulates them in the lab and then re reinjects them back into the body
    43:54
with the added feature now that these t cells can recognize tumor cells as being foreign
    44:00
so the they go they seek out the tumor cell and eliminate them the problem is one this this
    44:05
manipulation in the lab is quite expensive and two these car t cells actually stay in the body for several
    44:11
years and so they can lead to some some downstream undesired effects
    44:17
with mrna technology what's what's what's quite exciting and it's recently been shown is you can actually inject
    44:23
the mrna directly into the body the appropriate t cells will take up that mrna become modified to kill the
    44:30
tumor cell and because the mrna has a short half-life has a
    44:35
quite um as a vac mentioned it's gone within a few days so then that
    44:40
that modified t cell goes back to normal and you don't have this
    44:45
long resident time of these modified cells in the body creating downstream problems
    44:51
so these are three ways in which the technology as far as i know is is being applied and these these are actually
    44:57
there are clinical trials now ongoing with with some of these approaches
    45:02
and is there any sort of specific forms of cancer where you actually see this having you know effective treatments
    45:09

All our cells die and are replaced, so if you tweak the DNA the new cells that replace the previous ones could be completely different to the previous one. Things like bone structure are probably set in stone, but you could conceivably change the cells that make up your bones, and thus maybe even change what your bones are made of. There's also body chemistry, that we can already manipulate with drugs. I don't see why we can't use crispr to tweak that in adults, at the very least to an extent. Maybe dampen the chemicals that limit muscle growth. I'm probably wrong, but until someone can explain to me why that's the theory I'm sticking to

This might be possible, but progress will be very slow as experimenting with humans is 1) technically very difficult 2) Requires a lot of safety standard and ethical issues to be clarified. Besides an organism is more like a chaotic system with respect to genes. So predicting organism-wide change will be very difficult, even in model systems like mice. People forget that although we've mapped most of the brain, we don't completely understand it and mutation can be good, sure but to overdo it will eventually be the death of humanity. There will be problems with fertility and other things. Your DNA carries down certain personality traits or fears from ancestors. Why do you think most people hate spiders. It's a common fear just as most avoid spotted plants or just don't like the look of animals or w.e with spots. The DNA in them correlates it with posion as most spotted plants or bugs are poisonous
