Awesome video, it's super helpful to see HOW you do the shots and learn about the thoughts behind it. I've heard so much about having clean, smooth backgrounds behind subjects and to avoid distracting things like bright light spots and sticks in line with the head, and you look at this as foreground and BG interest. What a great point of view! Thanks for making these videos, always look forward to them.
Not all of us are lucky enough to have perfect outdoor locations, so we do what we can to use those elements in the images! For qualifications or awards, you need as little light bokeh as possible (currently, as it stands now in more print competitions)

Have to say these videos are excellent motivation, inspiration and amazing value for us all. I've seen people offering online courses for huge sums of money that are nowhere near as useful as these. Have you thought of doing a book on all of this? I love books! So far I have only found one good book specifically on Pet Photography.

Yes, but rarely. If they're in the same shot, they need to be exactly aligned on the same focal plane (eyes level with each others in comparison to the lens). If they are not, you will need to shoot them separately (at least focus on them separately) and merge the images together as a composite.
Really a very great video! But can you tell me how to make the eyes not so light in color when you bright them up. I like to have a darker eyes but very sharp.
Time, positive reinforcement, high reward frequency and very clear criteria. I would suggest speaking to a good dog agility trainer and ask them to teach you a fully proofed startline wait. A classic obedience stay won't be ideal for photography in the field (usually!).
I don't add blur so this isn't something that I feel confident providing - it's not something I do. A duplicated layer with a field blur would probably be the best way, masking is out away from the subject and the focal plane of course.
I have troubles with my dog - I like to do full body shots with a blurry background, but when there is an appropriate distance between us to make the blurry background, she doesn’t fit in the frame of the camera, even when my zoom lens is zoomed out as far as it goes. I’m not sure what exact number of mm is, but it’s around fifty. When I move her so she fits in the frame, I have a horrible background. Any tips? Also I am not an expert so don’t judge my terrible knowledge 😂

If the image is exposed well to begin with, not much noise is added afterwards. However, I buy my cameras based on the noise levels at different ISOs and it's one of the reasons why I chose the camera I have 😊

Pretty far when I use the 85mm, but yes to the hair and the eye colour (light brown), she has eyelashes that sometimes get in the way. Thanks for the reply though, some helpful things to consider!

On the second photo you took you had f2.8 iso1000 1/640, why didn't you push down the iso using something like a 1/400 ? Would it be wrong? I'm asking because it would have done like so if I were shooting there.
No, this would be correct - absolutely! I just use my shutter speed to control most of the light when shooting as my camera is fine with ISOs up to maybe 2000. But yes, bringing the ISO down would be the best choice for of the two in technical terms 🤓
I shoot with a non is 70-200 2.8 sigma. What sort of shutter speed would you expect to have to shoot at at around the 170-200mm. Does is make loads of difference...?

With the flexible point focus point mode in the Sony camera. Most cameras SHOULD have some variation of a flexible focus point. If you notice the square following the dog’s eyes throughout her video, that’s the where the camera is actually focusing on. So anything in that square will be tack sharp. These cameras can have slightly larger square sizes too. But the smaller the better for portraits because you always want the eyes in focus no matter what. Her Sony camera is one of the newer a7 iii’s. It’s auto eye detection and focus is pretty powerful as is. I have an a7 Mark ii and although it’s almost as powerful for the most part, it’s focus is nothing like the a7 iii line (I think she has the R?). The ii doesn’t have the ability to track eyes like the iii does. But the ii is just as sharp as the iii when it is in focus. I really recommend getting a Sony a7 iii if you’re willing to save up for it. It’s the only camera you’d ever really need. And you can get a prime 50mm lens for $400 which is phenomenal. The nifty fifty is one of the best lenses for portraits. 35mm also works well. So does 85mm. But for bang vs buck, it’s hard to go wrong with Sony’s 50mm prime.
@@lucym22 Happy to help! I’m sure other cameras has some version of automatic eye tracking in higher tier levels. But Sony is typically that brand that excels in innovation with affordability. Sony sensors are used in many other brands like Canon because it’s quality and price is hard to beat. I’m gonna admit I’m a little biased. But the bias doesn’t come from nowhere. The only reason Sony isn’t used more often is because Sony sucks at marketing. Otherwise, you can get an a7 ii for much cheaper than a iii and as I said, all round it’s almost the same. The menu/settings will be almost identical. It has the flexible focus spot which is really the main thing you need for portrait style photography. My dream lens is the 24-70mm G master hahah. I only have the Sony kit lens (which is actually much better than most kit lenses) and I have the 50mm 1.8 prime for now. I’ve still gotten phenomenal photos with the kit lens. It’s excellent to learn from. What camera are you using now?
@@lucym22 Go into your menu and look for your focus modes and see if there’s anything that says single point focus or something along those lines where t let’s you move the focus square anywhere you want in the screen. Your camera should have the ability to do so. Then you would set up your composition and then move the square manually to go over one of the eyes and you should start to get nicer in focus shots overall. Even if only one eye is in focus, it’s still able to be an excellent portrait. Whether it’s people or other animals.

How far away are you? And does the dog have hair covering the eyes or do they have dark eyes? Both and the distance make it very intermittent!

Second thing, I have a question. On the second photo you took you had f2.8 iso1000 1/640, why didn't you push down the iso using something like a 1/400 ? Would it be wrong? I'm asking because it would have done like so if I were shooting there.
No, this would be correct - absolutely! I just use my shutter speed to control most of the light when shooting as my camera is fine with ISOs up to maybe 2000. But yes, bringing the ISO down would be the best choice for of the two in technical terms 🤓

I shoot with a non is 70-200 2.8 sigma. What sort of shutter speed would you expect to have to shoot at at around the 170-200mm. Does is make loads of difference...?
1/400s and no less for me personally - yes, it will let less light in, you may need to use a higher ISO to compensate 👍

How did you get Alfie's eyes so sharp? I focus on the eyes but they are never that sharp😂💖
With the flexible point focus point mode in the Sony camera. Most cameras SHOULD have some variation of a flexible focus point. If you notice the square following the dog’s eyes throughout her video, that’s the where the camera is actually focusing on. So anything in that square will be tack sharp. These cameras can have slightly larger square sizes too. But the smaller the better for portraits because you always want the eyes in focus no matter what. Her Sony camera is one of the newer a7 iii’s. It’s auto eye detection and focus is pretty powerful as is. I have an a7 Mark ii and although it’s almost as powerful for the most part, it’s focus is nothing like the a7 iii line (I think she has the R?). The ii doesn’t have the ability to track eyes like the iii does. But the ii is just as sharp as the iii when it is in focus. I really recommend getting a Sony a7 iii if you’re willing to save up for it. It’s the only camera you’d ever really need. And you can get a prime 50mm lens for $400 which is phenomenal. The nifty fifty is one of the best lenses for portraits. 35mm also works well. So does 85mm. But for bang vs buck, it’s hard to go wrong with Sony’s 50mm prime.

I’m sure other cameras has some version of automatic eye tracking in higher tier levels. But Sony is typically that brand that excels in innovation with affordability. Sony sensors are used in many other brands like Canon because it’s quality and price is hard to beat. I’m gonna admit I’m a little biased. But the bias doesn’t come from nowhere. The only reason Sony isn’t used more often is because Sony sucks at marketing. Otherwise, you can get an a7 ii for much cheaper than a iii and as I said, all round it’s almost the same. The menu/settings will be almost identical. It has the flexible focus spot which is really the main thing you need for portrait style photography. My dream lens is the 24-70mm G master hahah. I only have the Sony kit lens (which is actually much better than most kit lenses) and I have the 50mm 1.8 prime for now. I’ve still gotten phenomenal photos with the kit lens. It’s excellent to learn from.

@@lucym22 Go into your menu and look for your focus modes and see if there’s anything that says single point focus or something along those lines where t let’s you move the focus square anywhere you want in the screen. Your camera should have the ability to do so. Then you would set up your composition and then move the square manually to go over one of the eyes and you should start to get nicer in focus shots overall. Even if only one eye is in focus, it’s still able to be an excellent portrait. Whether it’s people or other animals.
