A nyckelharpa (Swedish: [ˈnʏ̂kːɛlˌharːpa], "keyed fiddle", or literally "key harp", plural nyckelharpor) is a traditional Swedish musical instrument. It is a string instrument or chordophone. Its keys are attached to tangents which, when a key is depressed, serve as frets to change the pitch of the string.
The nyckelharpa is similar in appearance to a fiddle or the big Sorb geige or viol. Structurally, it is more closely related to the hurdy-gurdy, both employing key-actuated tangents to change the pitch.

I am genuinely curious as to why so little grand-scale music has been written for this instrument (i.e. Sonatas, Concertos, other longer classical forms). Wonderful work!
It's because it was a instrument for the common farmers not the court
It was very very rare... all through history really. It's not until now and the last decades that it is starting to spread more, both in numbers, geographically and in genres! So much exciting things are happening with the nyckelharpa right now! :)
Maybe It's because of all that clacking noise. Guitar makes little finger squeaks which to my mind are charming but this goes way beyond charming into the backwoods category, won't be liked by one & all.
With the guitar you caress and fondle the strings, it's very intimate. On a piano the levers and hammers interject a lot of distance and mathematical precision. So the music becomes more theoretical. The nyckelharpa is sort of like that with the violin. Maybe some inventor could work on making the pegs quieter.
I think that alle the sympathetic strings make it more difficult to play different scales and mark it as a solo instrument. Same thing happened to the Hurdy Gurdy: the drone strings make it a soloist instrument, difficult to fit in symphonic music of the 19th century.
a quieter nykal harpa just wouldn't be the same instrument. You want fiddle music..😄

The instrument (the nyckelharpa)is of the same family as the hurdy gurdy, but is also has things in common with the fiddle: unlike the hurdy gurdy, it has no wheel, and the strings are played with a bow.
Or like a violin with keys (and a billion strings lol)

must be a pain to tune it...
I have been playing one since 1979, and no, not too hard to tune. But there are those that do not bother, and in my book, they mis the Magic of the sympathetic strings that make the nyckelharpa so unique. I thank my parents for giving me one when I was only sweet 16.
