On the whole, I agree with him. However, he is incorrect about a few points. The most important is that the price of certain foods in America is so low not only because of increased productivity, but also because of government price controls and subsidies. So while the price of eggs and milk SEEMS low, it's artificial - we're all paying for it with our tax dollars. Big farms receive special treatment, and small family farms are going bankrupt because of this. He's saying our paychecks stretch further than they used to, but they don't entirely because taxes eat up our paychecks.
    His premise is correct, though.

If we keep reproducing, our population will grow beyond our capacity to innovate. Population control is a wise precaution, albeit one that has gone too far in some places.

Don't worry, there are those of us young people out here who are having large families, or planning on it. I'm 24 and married, and while I see so many women my age going full climate-alarmist feminist leftist, swearing off ever having kids... I fully plan on having at least 5 or 6. And they'll be homeschooled well, healthily-fed, free thinking, and as bad-chemical-free as I can get them. There are those of us out here doing this.

Erlich (the most spectacular misnomer known to me), was flamboyantly wrong about almost everything (stressing out an entire generation of children in the process of his rise), yet has paid NO price whatever for his gloriously wrong-headed prognostications. That is ALL anyone needs to know about the contemporary scientific and academic communities in which he has been ensconced.

Listen to what the people, who say there is too many people, are saying. They want to see less people, period. Not that they are worried about people, just that they want less. There policies show they want to control to make less abundance, to see others suffer as long as it’s not them. It’s sadistic, it’s evil. Don’t give them the benefit of the doubt it has good intentions.

Is the present human welfare an outlier? No. It’s the result of the human climb up the entropy gradient, from diffuse to dense energy systems. Biofuels to coal, to oil/gas to nuclear. Each step has enabled larger populations and wider horizons for reflection and activity other than agriculture or hunting. Oil was available to Napoleon, but was no advantage to him as there was neither knowledge of nor infrastructure for its utilisation. Who knows what human beings have yet to discover that will enable future welfare? We do know every new insight into nature has enabled increased welfare and more lethal weaponry. It has also enabled the tropical species of humanity to live in a much wider range of habitats than their biology would indicate - including the frigid hard vacuum of space.
Many environmentalists today see humanity as eaters and excreters, entirely missing the hands and heads, which is unreasonable. This has to be conceded or what are these environmentalists doing with their signs, and their daily individual exhalations of pounds of CO2?
It now appears possible that humanity may one day be able to avert an asteroid strike of the magnitude that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs; in the process saving humanity and the entire biome of the Earth. Reflection may have enabled deflection.

we are in time , where fewer people , produce more, we are looking at our career paths being eliminated by automation and AI.
The problem isn't the amount of people, it's the Age distrubution, the pension model , the fact a signficant part of the world's workforce will have no 'use' in a high tech society. We don't need more people and the elephant in the room, is most growth comes from areas that will never be rich, always be a drain

    I'm sceptical...
    Housing is more expensive
Electricity and Gas is more expensive
    Water is more expensive.
    Food is more expensive.
In fact everything is more expensive because Demand outweighs supply - and the larger the populations the more demand.
How expensive and efficient are desalination plants for starters????

This argument works to a certain point. It doesn’t recognise the possibility that the, say, six percent of innovators might reach a point where human ingenuity reaches its ultimate ceiling, with a reliance on AI, say, taking charge thereafter. I’m not sure I buy the human ingenuity has no limits if it's given opportunity argument. Full of woolly assumptions.
