You gotta do Ball and Chain live from Monterrey Pop festival next. Ive known her name my whole life but just started discovering Janis Joplin music the last few years and I'm hard pressed to come up with a more impressive singer from any era. This performance was brand new for me and as usual it was goddam amazing. When it comes to live performances she has no equal. She was truly awesome. I heard Steven Tyler of Aerosmith say that he was a big Janis Joplin fan and felt that she was the best singer of all time and it was a big part for him breaking into music. I've gotta agree with him. She is fricken fucken tremendous.

"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin in 1925 at a cottage on Folly Beach in Charleston SC. He and his brother rented the cottage to get away from the world and wrote "Porgy and Bess".

Pretty amazing that 2 Jewish sons of immigrants from NYC managed to capture the soul of the Gullah (low-country Black) culture in this and other songs from Porgy and Bess. For the original-original of this song, see if you can find an opera or Broadway performance. It's been covered by dozens of singers and bands in almost any genre of music.

It was so different back then. You guys watch music videos and can critique on performance, sound ect. We used to dissolve into the music. You closed your eyes lying on your back and just experienced it. Most of our artists didn’t have “ acts” they just grabbed the mic and sang, and their feelings came out with the music, straight into us.

"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin for his opera "Porgy and Bess," which was first performed in 1935.
"Porgy and Bess" tells the story of an African American family in the southern United States, and "Summertime" is one of the most well-known arias from this opera. The lyrics for the song were written by American poet DuBose Heyward. Composing this aria was a unique moment in Gershwin's career, as he incorporated many elements of jazz and African American music into the opera, which was unusual for him.
Covers of "Summertime" have been recorded by many famous musicians, such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Nina Simone, Django Reinhardt, and many others, but the most stunning, in my opinion, was Janis Joplin's rendition of this song.

Finally someone who has a reaction to the best ever performance of Janis Joplin singing Summertime. I've listened to every singer on yt who has sung this song including the album version of this song. In my estimation this is the best version EVER. Thank You!

Check out Janis Joplin Work Me Lord Live in Stockholm 1969. One of her best performances, and what's amazing is that it's the last song of a long set. She still absolutely kills it!! Good luck!

Janis is in a bubble with her band when she sings and it's as though there is no one else anywhere around -- just her and them. I love Janis and her soul! Definitely stay on the train and ride it into the rabbit hole of Janis Joplin! Great reaction!!

Another great performance is "Work Me Lord", live from Stockholm in 1969.

Growing up, one song that I heard a lot was, Mercedes Benze. It is sung a cappella. It was played on the radio quite a bit. And was written by Janice Joplin at a poetry slam. There are other credits for the song as well. I don't remember whom.

And just think, in today's music industry, Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Doctor Hook, Doctor John, Mick Jagger, Stephen Tylor. Would never get a shot. I feel so sorry for you young people. I do like your reactions.

Man you need to hear Bobby sing it from the Righteous Brothers . He gives Janice a run for his money but anybody that can sing unchained Melody the way he did you know he can give her a run for her money they're both just so damn good.
