No one has five sons who play professional sports, let alone the same professional sport. It's just absolutely unheard of. That man has golden genes and is a great teacher.
And Brent Barry with the Sonics and Spurs was a GREAT role player, absolutely valuable piece that it's very rare to see.
Rick is also in a 50s years old-ike shape. Great stuff.

Rick Barry has always been the real deal ... the graciousness to acknowledge his daughter, the academics imparted to his children (Master's in Nuclear Engineering ... you kidding me?) ... etc. etc. etc. BTW: Rick Barry's free throw technique is efficient per the laws of Physics ... his arc starts low and the velocity is near zero, in the vertical direction, when his shot approaches the rim ... as soft a shot as possible ... I'm sure his son can affirm this as well.

When Kareem was asked about his top five players he suggested Rick Barry should be in the conversation.
And he was right.. or certainly in any top twenty list
I could listen to this guy talk for hours.
Surprised he didn't really talk about Brent and Jon, perhaps because he didn't want to show favouritism, but they were some of my favourite players in their NBA days. Guys who made life easier for everyone else.
Rick Barry's first wife was the daughter of Bruce Hale, his coach and a former NBA player. So you had some some serious genetics in that family.
Rick Barry is one of the most impressive people you'll ever see. He was a great basketball player and, to me, is in any GOAT conversation. He was a great announcer, one of the best there was. Very insightful and truthful (which probably got him canned). He had an incident with Bill Russell as a broadcaster which led to his demise. Unfortunate that the two didn't get along because they were two of the best announcers going and were similar iconoclasts. And, of course, he was an incredible father, raising five good kids the right way. How many people can you say are absolutely brilliant in everything they do?
Yeah he's gotta be in any top twenty or twenty five player list of all-time
@@manny4552 I'd go as far to say #2 small forward of all time only behind Bird and just ahead of Baylor and the Dr. - I know many want to say LeBron, but he has gotten away with murder from traveling, palming/carrying, double dribbles, and as talented as he is, he has not been consistently clutch. For those of you who rely on stats to make your case, then who do you rank #1 as a point guard, because Stockton (who is great, but not my #1) is the all time leader in both assists and steals. Thus if you do not automatically put Stockton at #1 for point guard, don't start up with LeBron's stats.
@@MultiEviscerator I don't rely solely on stats because I started watching a ton of games in 1969 until today... I've seen a lot of the greats play... You make make a great case for Barry as the number two small forward.. but then swingman John havlicek enters the chat too... I agree with alot of what you said about James... Duly noted... His greatest accomplishment was passing Kareem on the all-time scoring list . I thought no one ever would do that.. as far as Stockton goes.. well they did not start keeping track of steals till what.. 1973... Now Walt Frazier enters the steals chat.. I'd rather have magic or bob cousy running my offense than Stockton but Stockton was great of course ... You make some interesting points

Every time I hear him speak I can hear the fire still burns as much as it EVER did. RB was and is always among the super-elite. Always, always, a Real Pisser. I couldn't bring myself to like his Warriors team, but I sure admired and respected them. As the years passed that turned into affection.

I was Glad to hear Rick say "God has a plan..." I hope Rick and his family are following Jesus! That's the greatest success in life. But on the basketball note, wow! All 5 sons playing pro ball!! Kudos to him and them!
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American and male. 1993-94 was one of the BEST times of my life, and 1996 was pretty special, too. My "handsome" days were from ages 20-27, and I was SO confident, because in my mind, "looks are everything." I've been on a steady and rapid decline since 28 (weight gain and white hair), and at 51 in 2024, I'm downright ugly. But, DAMN, Rick Barry got UGLY! He was a good-looking man when he was young. Man, he got old and ugly!!

I like that he mentions that Canyon isn't in the league because they value the 2-way guys more, this is proof that defense is still a big thing in the NBA despite what oldheads and haters would like to tell you.

He was a flat out scorer but he didn't think the game the way bird did. No shame in that, bird maybe best ever in that regard.
Jerry West in his book said, “I’m not sure that Bird was any better than Rick Barry”!

I apologize for bashing in other comments. He was very nasty when younger . I personally watched him at practice in 1965/66. Warriors practiced at University of San Francisco. I just sat in the stands when he was rookie. Has mellowed over years. May have been under lot of pressure from father..
In my judgment Rick Barry is the best basketball player White America has ever produced.
Barry is one of the all-time greats of the game. Period.

It's a shame the original broadcasts of the 1967 Finals don't exist. Those games were defining showpieces for Chamberlain and Barry

I believe Canyon did. I watched all four of his other sons play for De La Salle HS in CA, and as I remember they all shot FT's conventional style.
All combined they're not even half the player their Father Rick was.
Brent had a very good career even though he played out of position. Would have been a better point guard.
This was great, but Rick is delusional if he thinks Scooter was good enough to play in the NBA.

@@finallife87 Rick is one of the greatest players ever so that is a pretty high bar. Of everyone on the Top 75 list I would say Rick's kids are the most successful. Brent and Jon were legitimate and played solid minutes everywhere they went
@@TRJ2241987 Jon was dogshit compared to Brent. Also, Brent's nose got broken because he was the first through the door. So minimum, he was tougher and obviously the better athlete due to his superior hops.
