This is my absolute favorite of all of Shirley Temple's dance routines. Really fast and difficult. I read that this routine actually gave her trouble. Still, Shirley was a dancing prodigy.

Shirley was gifted. She had no trouble learning dance routines. She often had the entire movie script memorized and would correct the adult actors when the flubbed lines. She was a smart cookie!

It didn't go as smoothly as you would like to think. According to Shirley's bio when it was time to go into the recording studio to dub in their taps to the already filmed sequence, they had great trouble. "Someone" was always off a little. The dubbing of the taps was not matching the taps as seen on the video. The engineer could not determine who was off and so Faye and Hayley blamed little Shirley. Shirley did not think it was her and so she blamed Faye. Things got rather tense after hours had gone by and there was not one acceptable take. So the engineer came up with the idea that Shirley, Faye and Haley would each dub in their taps separately. That seemed to solve the problem.

I love all three, but Jack Haley looks like he's having the best time and there's nothing he'd rather be doing. *Very* attractive quality! I wish he'd made more films, but he said he never thought being in the movies was the be-all to end-all. He was so talented--singing, dancing, comedy, acting--he could do it all.

Alice Faye said she really wasn't that familiar with Shirley Temple when she was cast in this movie. She wasn't thrilled with being in a movie with some kid and couldn't understand how they expected someone so young to learn such an intricate routine. Shirley not only was a delight to work with, but breezed through this number. Faye said Shirley was the greatest natural talent she ever knew. Her mother would sit to the side and say "Sparkle, Shirley!".

The highlight routine from Poor Little Rich Girl. Military Man paired Shirley Temple with Jack Haley and Alice Faye. The results were fantastic. At age eight, Shirley showed the world that her dancing and singing were enough to pull in moviegoers to theatres during those Depression days. A time when they cursed the movie stars on cross-country train tours to promote their latest films for their wealth while millions struggled to get jobs. However, Shirley gained their love. Who could hate a child who was, at one time, the number one box office draw? Thank you for posting.
FOOTNOTE: Not all of the adult film stars were hated. They had their share of fans, of course, but the public was frustrated with so many out of work, in spite of the WPA and other job creation programs during FDR's New Deal.

I love the swell close-up of the trio at the very end. It was as though Fox knew what a show stopper this number was, and decided to give them the "star treatment sign-off" in that brief shot, a sort of "tip of the hat" that all three so richly deserved. What a wham!

This was always my favourite growing up (B&W, of course). Whenever I look at the six on dice I think of this dance and call them my little soldiers. Always thought it was strange that they put a tap dancing number on a radio show. Just read that Jack Haley and Shirley Temples mom got into a argument because Jack claims Shirley couldn't keep up on this routine. Mom of course said otherwise. They secretly had the 2 adult actors do the number without Shirley, dubbing Shirleys taps in later. That did look like a difficult number for s child to do.

According to Shirley's bio, they weren't so synchronized when it came to dubbing in their taps in the recording studio to the already filmed version of the number. "Someone" was always a bit off from the tapping on the video as Faye, Haley and Shirley kept pointing fingers at the other. Eventually the sound engineer had to record each person's tapping separately.

There's something about her, a very great star indeed, that combines so many ingredients that I don't think there will ever be anyone like her. Her "imperfections" are part of her enduring charm, which even as late as 2012, I can tell you from personal experience, can still steam-roll you quite nicely!

You know it would have been quite strange if she had been cast in the WIZARD OF OZ as Dorothy, as she almost was, because with the exception of Ray Bolger she had already worked with everyone in the main cast including the dog who played Toto. She was in BRIGHT EYES with Terry the Terrier, POOR LITTTLE RICH GIRL with Jack Haley, JUST AROUND THE CORNER with Burt Larr (I know I miss spelled his last name) and in DIMPLES with Frank Morgan.

Haley wasn't always the Tin Man. Buddy Ebsen was cast, but he got sick from the makeup. He was replaced and the makeup was reformulated.

What's amazing is how much of that dance number was done only a couple of uninterrupted shots.

Just love this number. Love the whole movie! Once they begin dancing and the background singer takes over, is that Alice Faye's voice?

@Laceygal123 The song "Military Man" was written for the movie "Poor Little Rich Girl". Words and music by Mack Gordon and Harry Revel, c.1936. You can find copies on e-bay once in a while.

Me too, but I did enjoy his dance routine in Oz. When I'm watching, I still hyperfocus on that dance to this day.

I’m a dancing Milwaukee milwaukitary man. I’ve tapped but not at that level that I’m aware of. Irish set dancing approaches at moments though.
