Film Room: Jaire Alexander is one of the most underrated cornerbacks in the NFL

  • After having a franchise quarterback, there’s a strong argument that the second most important position on a team is having an elite shutdown cornerback on defense. Having a cornerback that can singlehandedly eliminate an offense’s main threat is absolutely critical in today’s NFL. When you look around the league, one team that I think has that already is the Green Bay Packers. They have a cornerback by the name of Jaire Alexander.
    In Alexander’s three short seasons in the NFL, he’s developed into one of the premiere players at this position. His ability to shadow and cover some of the league’s best receivers and eliminate them from the game plan is what makes him extremely valuable. In three back-to-back-to back weeks he did just that. When he was in coverage in week 4, he completely blanketed Calvin Ridley. In Week 6 he took out Mike Evans and in Week 7 he also eliminated Will Fuller as well. He didn’t allow a single reception in those three games when he lined up against those top receivers. Even in his most recent game against the Vikings, he allowed just a single reception for 12 yards against the emerging rookie Justin Jefferson. In this video, I breakdown how exactly he does that.

      One thing I think you missed is Jaire’s ability to get off blocks on pitches to the flat and screen plays. Dude almost can never be blocked when it a screen type play or just a quick pitch to the outside just like the play when he smashed into thielen causing Stefon diggs to lose around 10 yards

    Im a huge GB fan, but until we get some decent defenders like Kenny Clark in the middle and seriously upgrade our porous LB corps, we are going nowhere. A good JV team can run on us. Rodgers cannot drag us to the promised land by himself.

    • @rickycouture7224
      @rickycouture7224 Před 3 lety +1

      There were a lot of teams in that late second-round pick range this year who were in desperate need of inside linebacker help, and surprisingly they all let Jeremy Chinn slide. While some might argue he's better at Safety, I feel like he would've made the perfect anchor to the Packers defense in the middle.
      As much as people hated on the Jordan Love pick, at least that one I could understand. The one that shocked me was AJ Dillon. I just don't see where he fits into their short or long-term plans, and they clearly had bigger needs on defense. Hopefully that doesn't come back to bite them in the arse in the playoffs.

    • @adrianbuck8772
      @adrianbuck8772 Před 3 lety

      They historically don't value MLB. Dean Lowry(DE) is on a 3 year 20.3 million deal from 2020-2022. He has to step up.

      @@rickycouture7224 jones's contract is up after the season. Dillon could replace him next year. The packers are a draft and DEVELOP team, so their draft picks are almost never meant to be big contributors for 2-3 years.
      Look at Rashan Gary for a recent example. People questioned why they took him when they just signed Preston Smith to a big 3 year deal. Well, they didn't plan on using Gary much for the first 2-3 years, they like to build players into what they want before they let them loose in GB. That's why their picks will sometimes not make sense for that year, but they are always thinking long term so they often times end up making sense in a couple years.

    • @rickycouture7224
      @rickycouture7224 Před 3 lety

      @@AdamB34 -- Every team that drafts young talent is a draft and develop team. The only real value in young players in today's NFL is that they play under a rookie wage scale, making it all the more important for them to perform while their cap number is low.
      As for Rashan Gary, you definitely don't take a player at his position with the #12 overall pick unless you have great confidence in him being an immediate contributor. They took a shot on his talent because they didn't believe his college production (or lack thereof) equaled out to who they saw in the pre-draft process. Guaranteed, though, if they could re-do that pick that they'd have taken someone else.
      But in regards to AJ Dillon, you definitely don't draft an RB to be on some three year plan. That's the position you most need to see value in immediately, so unless they do let Aaron Jones walk -- which I think would be a huge mistake -- then it will have made no sense for them to invest such a high pick in AJ Dillon. It's just not their style, especially not with Rodgers having such chemistry with Aaron Jones both in the run and pass game.
      IMO, the Packers just have a bad habit of outthinking themselves. They place too much stock on what might be rather than on what is. They needed a receiver to line up across Davante Adams. They've had multiple chances to land stars at the position, including taking Jace Sternberger just one pick ahead of Terry McLaurin. What it comes down to is just poor player evaluations. It happens, so it's not like they deserve too much blame... But I certainly wouldn't take the angle that they somehow made those moves with the intention of those players being what they are right now. I would hope that even they realize their own mistakes.
