I did go to Faro SEF and they told me I must apply on line .... can you please advise? Thank you Gail
The stumbling block to the D7 process appears to be getting an initial appointment with the embassy here in the UK. You can only do it on line and there are never any vacant slots. SEF in Portugal will not entertain you until you have jumped through this hoop
Thank you for such informative video I will take your services when I will get appointment in my country I am trying for last 8 months but I couldn't get D7 appointment. I have all my documents here.
Hello! We sent you an email with a couple of questions about the rent address option. Just wanted to confirm if you received it since we are traveling in March. Thanks
Hello Mia and Rafael; I'm in Portugal for a few months and was wondering if it's possible to get a NIF while I'm here. Some information that I've found says that you can just go and line up at Financas and get one, but other info says that you need an appointment to do this. Do you know which is correct, and if it's easy for me to do this myself? Thanks for your help :)
It used to be walk-in but since Covid they started to do appointment only during the period of lock down and semi lock-down. Right now it highly depends on each Financas, we suggest to go to your local one to ask their own rules.
Yes please explain taxes, we will not have much money coming in from our retirements as it is... also the thieving US Govt makes things very difficult by taxing by citizenship no matter where you live.
When you retire to Portugal with a D7 visa, you will become a tax resident in Portugal. However, you may be eligible for some tax benefits if you combine it with the NHR program. It's always best to consult with a lawyer to get all the details and ensure that you're taking the right steps for your situation. And thanks for subscribing to our channel!
I am an EU resident so I don't think that the D7 Visa applies for me. I would like to buy a holiday home in Portugal. I don't intend to live there permanently but up to 5 months each year. I also would like to remain a tax resident in my country. Do I need to apply for a special visa? My income while in Portugal will be passive.
Have there been changes for retirees who want a D7 visa in terms of savings requirements? I have double the monthly income requirements but not the savings account.
Nothing has changed with the D7 visa requirements. You need to meet the monthly recurring income along with one years worth of the minimum Portuguese salary in a Portuguese bank account.
If you're only renting, you don't need to have a Portuguese bank account. However, if you're planning to apply for visas like the D7, then having a Portuguese bank account is required.
Would this be good for adsense earning for a person with multiple website or affiliate earning i feel more as passive income. Because I don't think the digital nomad visa is more for remote worker who work with clients.
If I get a term of responsibility from a friend in Portugal. Am I allowed to move once I find another place? If so, should it be before or after my SEF appointment?
Yes, you are. It would be best to do so before your SEF appointment because they’ll have to register your address and that’s where you’ll get your residency card and other important documents sent to.
Very informative! You both work so well together Thanks! Just to clarify on D7, my understanding is you have to stay in the country either 6 consecutive months OR 8 non-consecutive months for each year as a temporary resident and taxed 10% on any income. Correct? Is the 10% tax still good for 10 years? My wife & I are retired, do we get taxed on non-income assets like savings from our U.S. bank or brokerage accounts? Is it possible to get insurance or on the National Health Plan at 62 years old? Abrigado!!!
A visa like the D7 has nothing to do with taxes other than allowing you to spend enough time in Portugal to become tax resident. You will need to apply for the NHR tax regime separately and this will be done thru the Portuguese IRS and not thru SEF, the immigration service. The application for NHR status must be done before March 31 of your first year of tax residency. You can enroll in the public health service upon being granted residency. You can also purchase private health insurance to supplement the public system, but as you get older your options for private coverage dwindle. I believe there is only one company that will give you a private policy if you are over either 65 or 70. Sorry I don't remember the exact cutoff age for the other companies or the name of the one that will continue to write for those older. As is usually the case, taxes are trickier and you should consult a tax professional in Portugal for clarification for your specific circumstances. Also, if you are from the US you will still be required to file tax returns and potentially owe taxes in the US in accordance with the Double Taxation Treaty between the US and Portugal.
Hello Mia and Rafael, first of all I would like to thank you for the great info on D7 visa. My question is about the passive income. Can savings be considered as passive income as well? Many thanks.
Hello, no, savings is not usually considered passive income. Passive income is income that comes in regularly without requiring constant or direct labor on your part. This can include earnings from rental properties, dividends from investments, royalties from creative work, affiliate marketing, or income from online businesses that largely operate on autopilot. The idea is that you set up the income stream initially, and it continues to generate money over time with minimal day-to-day involvement. So while having savings is essential, it alone wouldn't be considered passive income.

Now we are in Dubai my wife have 2 years residence permit and a business licence and i will apply for residence permit with business license. Now we want to apply for D7 vissa. Can we apply for D7 visa? And how possibility to get the visa? How can we proof our passive income? Thanks in advance..
You would have to show provable income. If you’re reporting the cash you earn and have the necessary documents proving you earn this much you may be able to apply. We recommend speaking to an immigration lawyer for legal advice as we cannot offer you legal advice.
if a couple apply for D7 is it necessary for both of them to have NIF numbers?
Yes, both of you must have NIF numbers.
Hello,My husband and I want to apply for D7 visa.I earn my income with Amazon e-commerce.I will sponsor my husband.
Is this considered passive income? Can we apply for D7 visa with e-commerce income?
It would have to be considered passive. If you consider this e-commerce business your job then it may not be allowed. We recommend consulting with an immigration lawyer as we are not lawyers.
My suggestion is do not go to Portugal. The local already know about so many people looking to move over there that, they will take advantage of the retirees looking to move over there. Better to find others countries less populars. I understand that most places will charge you the same rate per month even if you want to rent for one year.
