  • In this video, home renovation brothers Dave and Rich and Dave's son, Caleb, show you how to replace a GE Cafe Refrigerator RPWFE Water Filter.
    Replacing a GE Cafe water filter is not difficult, but you MUST know which type of water filter housing you have to determine how to remove the old filter and how to install the new one.
    In this video, the refrigerator that we are working on has a gray water filter housing. This type of filter will be removed by pulling it straight out.
    If you had a GE Cafe refrigerator with a blue water filter housing you would turn the filter one quarter turn to remove it and also turn the new filter one quarter turn to install it.
    After the filter is removed, replace it with a genuine GE RPWFE water filter. A generic filter could possibly not work correctly.
    With the gray water filter housing, simply push the filter straight into the housing, but don't turn it. There are small grooves that you have to line up to keep it in place. Make sure to push until the filter is seated all the way.
    After that, run the water dispenser for about 5 minutes, pouring out 2 gallons of water to make sure all of the air is purged from the lines.
    Knowing how to fix a sliding glass door means saving a lot of money. It is easy and inexpensive. It may be as easy as replacing the rollers on which the sliding door rides. Typical problems with a sticking sliding glass door reside with a broken track or a track clogged with debris, or broken rollers. If a quick cleaning of the track doesn't help, then it's time to examine the rollers. To do this, follow this video and you'll see how simple it is to remove the door and the rollers.
    A sliding glass door can be removed by removing the stops and door guard. Then the sliding door can be lifted up and out to expose the rollers on the bottom of the door. The rollers fit into mortised pockets. The rollers can be pried out and inspected.
    If you need a new roller, order one up from Amazon and in a couple of days you'll have what you need to get your sliding glass door back into shape.
    That's it, hope this helps!

    I watched several videos on replacing this GE water filter with NO luck. You were the only one that discussed the inside of the connector being either gray or blue. This was the trick. I kept trying to turn the filter which is why I could not get it in the receptacle. Thank you very much for your help. It is very appreciated.

      Hi Wendy, we have encountered many products, especially tools and machines, that have terrible instruction booklets. So we spend a while figuring out how to use the item and make a video, figuring other people will probably also be trying to solve the riddles. Thanks so much for your comment, glad the video was helpful!

      I used a wooden spoon handle to move the white piece to get the right alinement. Then the filter went on (finally). I'm not sure how exactly I removed the old filter but it wasn't easy. I thought I had it moved all the way to the right before pulling. I read not to turn it but I may have a slight bit with all the wiggling and pushing, it was very frustrating. Both the pulling off and pushing on of the filter took way to much force. I kept feeling like I was going to break it. What a terrible design. I know I am responding to an old post but maybe this will save somebody a lot of misery. 😁

    Thank you so much for the difference between the gray and blue holder as the manual did NOT mention that very important tip. • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Kathryn, we agree, it doesn't make sense that a refrigerator manufacturer would have two different filters for the same model. Some people are saying the colors don't always correlate to what we were saying. So this is very confusing. We wonder how many people have broken their filters installing them the wrong way. Very glad yours went smoothly, thanks much for your comments!

    • @speedlever
      @speedlever Před 3 lety

      Fwiw, I changed out the original filter on my 2020 cafe fridge yesterday. I have the gray filter connection. The original filter did not want to come out so I put some muscle into it and the filter popped out. It broke one of the tabs on the filter itself. I hope the gray connector is ok. I replaced the OEM filter with the factory plug because I have a whole house water filtration system.
      Anyway, no apparent leaks in the system. I have to agree this is a poor design for what will surely be an owner service vs having a shop come out to change the filter.

    My housing is gray but it does require turning to get it out and in. It was very hard to get the filter out. I had to use a wrench in order to turn the filter counter-clockwise. Putting a new one in was even harder. I broke one filter and finally got the second filter in but I still needed a wrench to turn it clockwise. The water started working correctly. However, the message that I need a new filter is still there. Is there a way to turn this message off or does the message indicate that there still is something wrong with the installation? I spent at least an hour on this "simple" replacement.

      Hey Connie,
      I’d call GE. But here is a guess. I vaguely remember removing a filter and the area where it attaches had some moisture around it so installing the new filter didn’t register. Maybe something like that???
      There has to be some kind of combination of buttons or the like to do a hard reset.
      GE should be able to give you a solution.
      Thx for watching.

      Hey Kash,
      See if this helps:
      After you change the filter, the RESET WATER FILTER must be pressed and held until the red light goes off. On some models, the light goes out, and others will turn green; either is considered normal. If you do not hold the pad in, the red light will stay on. Also, if you hold the pad in for a long period of time, the light will go off and then come back on. If this does not turn the red light off, having it checked by a service technician is recommended.

However, the “notches” at the top and bottom of the white housing are not fully exposed to accept a new filter. How do I move/rotate the white housing to the right to accept the new filter? • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 4 lety

      Hi Karen, without being there to see exactly what you are referring to, this is difficult to advise about. There are two kinds of filters made for this refrigerator, one inserts and the other one twists in, so you have to make sure you have the correct type for your specific model.
      If the tabs break off the filter, the filter is probably no longer functional and you will need to get a new one.
      Below is a link to the info from GE where they explain how to remove the old filter and replace it with a new one: products.geappliances.com/appliance/gea-support-search-content?contentId=21284
      Hope this helps, good luck!

    • @Housebarons
      @Housebarons  Před 4 lety

      Hi Drinny26,
      Yes, you do need to flush the water after you install a new water filter.
      Flush 2 gallons. It takes about 5 minutes.
      This will purge the air out of the system.
      Plus, the first water that comes out can be dirty.
      So definitely purge, but no need to purge 10 gallons, 2 gallons will be fine.
      Hope this helps, good luck!

    I replaced a filter with no problem, but when the dispenser stops there is a harsh thud or click. Any idea what that is? It happens every time I use the dispenser. Water and ice come out fine, but when the water stops it always stops with a thud coming from the upper left of the fridge. Have tried reducing the flow from the wall to the fridge and no difference.

    The video was very informative and easy to follow. I have a question I am hoping you can help with. When I replaced my filter the refrigerator began to display “leak detected” warning and disabled water dispensing. I was wondering if you have ever encountered this? I have replaced the filter with other new filters, have spoken with GE over the phone to troubleshoot and have had 2 repairman here to look at it and no one has been able to help. The filter is seemingly fine. There is no actual leak and I can only guess that it has to do with the way the filter is seating however one of the repairman who came to look at it told me there are no sensors in the fitting so can’t be this? I know this is a lot of information but just hoping to find the problem so we can fix it. Thanks!

      Hi Sarah, the following video from GE says that the filter might not be properly installed:czcams.com/video/IJ9dHSH-e4Q/video.html
      If that isn't the issue, I would do a factory reset, below are the instructions to do that:
      How do you reset a GE Cafe Refrigerator?
      Press and hold all four of the temperature adjustment buttons for three seconds and then release. When "0" flashes in the displays, the refrigerator is in the self-diagnostic mode. Press "1" and then "5" to completely reset the entire system. After the system resets, unplug the refrigerator and then restore power.
      If that doesn't fix the problem, then I would think that you really do have a leak and instead of calling a general repairman, call a GE Authorized repair person. They will know how to diagnose and fix this problem.
      Hope this helps, let us know how things work out!

      @Housebarons  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Areej, no, we have not found the GE Cafe refrigerator to be loud at all. Actually, very quiet, not sure why people are saying it is loud.
      We will be doing a video review of this exact refrigerator soon.
      Cons: The icemaker gets stuck if you don't use it a lot.
      Sometimes the button for the crushed ice gets stuck.
      We got a counter depth fridge, it doesn't hold a large amount of items.
      They might have a larger version of this refrigerator.
      Pros: The counter depth looks slick because it aligns with everything in the kitchen.
      Provides both cold and hot water.
      Has a very nice display to show how many ounces of water it dispenses.
      Has cool blue light display.
      This refrigerator is definitely upscale. Top tier refrigerators can go for $7,000 or more.
      This one is less than half the cost, so for us it is a good value.
      Hope this helps, good luck with your purchase!

      How long you had the refrigerator?
      Mention about the sound.
      How long it takes for the water to get hot.
      The measurements and model you have on hand.
      Storage issues, if any?

      Hi Mary, it is very frustrating when you take the time to do a DIY project and it doesn't quite go smoothly. Here are some things to try.
      Unplug the refrigerator and then plug it back in, maybe it will reset.
      The water filter warning light or message is reset by pressing the Ice & Water pad on the control panel for three seconds. The filter light should turn green, and the filter status will show Good. Evidently this is pretty temperamental. If you hold it too long, it won't work.
      When the filter or bypass is correctly installed, the word "FRONT" will be showing. If "BACK" is showing, then reverse the filter or bypass and reinstall.
      Also, the air has to be purged from the line after the filter is changed. They want you to dispense water about 5 minutes.
      If none of this works, you may have to either install another filter or call a technician.

      Run 2 gallons of water through the cold water dispenser (about 5 minutes) to remove air from
      the system. A newly installed filter cartridge will cause water to spurt from the dispenser. Use a large pitcher or
      sports bottle to catch the water spray. NOTE: It is normal for water to appear discolored during the initial system flush.

      Hi Molly, just to be clear, when you say you have a grey one, you mean you purchased a grey RPWFE water filter, and the housing where it inserts in your refrigerator is also grey, correct?
      If so, all should go well, but it is a bit tricky to insert. You have to make sure the word "front" is on the front side of the filter when you insert it.
      Also, you will not twist the filter, just insert it into the housing. Line up the clips on the front of the filter with the slots in the housing.
      You could take a picture of the housing and blow it up so you can see exactly how you need to put it. Then maneuver it until the new filter seats correctly in the housing.
