  • Here's another look at the phenomenal scratch spin of Nicole Hassler, this time from the exhibition of the 1964 Europeans before a home crowd in Grenoble. Brilliant ability to centre, and phenomenal core strength to maintain that speed for so long.

When moments like that mattered. Before spins had to take on three hideous pretzel twist positions to gain “levels”.

bassethound1, I so agree! A beautiful fast scratch is still the best instead of figure skaters having to be acrobats or contortionists to gain points!

I totally agree! I am hoping that the ISU will soon realize enough people have been taking notice that the current rule appears to undervalue these “honest” skills and, instead, reward unnatural “fluffs” that have little-or nothing, in many cases-with solid foundational skills.

she was the best spinner in the world at that time and will always rank in the top 5 ladies spinners ever

could not agree more, even laybacks look hideous these days.

robin, Lucinda had wonderful spins, but Lucinda's figure skating career came more than 20 years later after Ms. Nicole's!

@@paulasfigureskating5612 I am well aware of that... I was simply stating Nicole's spins reminded me of Lucinda's spins. Perhaps, (I do not know) Lucinda was inspired by Miss Hassler. Thank you for your comment.

You know, figure skating has seen some SUPER amazing spinners over the decades-from Denise Biellmann, Kay Thomson, to Lucian Ruh…that I have personally witnessed. I think I can add Nicole Hessler to the list (although I have never seen her skate personally). Curiously, of the four, three were clockwise spinners (w/ the exception of Kay Thomson).
If I include Karin Iten (whom I personally didn’t find to be a compelling spinner but many considered to have been one), four out of five were clockwise spinners! Maybe there’s something to be investigated about the physics/mechanics, genetics, and/or other elements associated with being a southpaw being linked to their exceptional spinning ability!

Add in Ronnie Robertson on the men's side - another clockwise skater!

Fastest spin I've ever seen - her upper body becomes almost invisible, and if you try to look at her skates, just a white blur! Almost seems like trick filming. Used to think Sonja Henie was a fast soinner, but Nicole makes her look like a revolving door!

Have I ever said how much I hate the current code of points? No more scratch spins like this, or an Ina Bauer the entire length of the ice or inside edge spirals that last forever like Michelle Kwan. It's ruined figure skating IMO. To a great extent it makes one program look just like any other.

I agree! And no more of those beautiful high split jumps anymore either! The two that Brian Boitano did in the 88 Olympics were stunning!

@@SissyFlip And the two full circle spread eagles, especially the inside edge one. Skaters currently don't train figures which is what gave skaters of that era the edge control to do things like that. Bring back figures!!!!!

Maybe it has to do with some of the long-term damage that it may have caused to some who took it tona certain extreme (concussions)..
Not that jumps aren't dangerous too, I certainly prefer to watch spins myself, and by a lot, I actually don't care for jumps. They stress me out and probably take skaters a lot of energy that could go into other aspects of the programs.
      But just saying.
