I noticed you’ve installed the impeller in the opposite direction compared to when it was removed. I do appreciate your video, as this helped me understand the sequence of the gaskets.
now im confused because i dont know how mine came apart either because it was in a hundred pieces.
One of the guys in the other comments said the drive corrects the impeller anyways..
The one thing I needed this video for 😅
@@luistrejo4323 it don’t matter how it goes back in once the engine is turning the impeller settles in it’s natural position.
4:32 "This is gonna suck, but it's gotta be done".
Sums up the entire project for me. Thanks for setting realistic expectations!
I wonder if you put it in the freezer for an hr or so would it be easier to put the impeller in that housing. They do that with Gimbel bearings.

Performing this repair in the grass is brilliant, especially by yourself. Thank you!
Boy was that a wonderful video. I have a mess with my Chapparal right now. I’m hoping I can fix by watching your videos
Love the vid. Straight to the point. Fast worker, good quality video and editing. Keep it up I appreciate it
Awesome descriptions and everything! Thank you for this well done video
Thanks for posting! Super helpful, saved me a boat load of $$$ having a repair shop replace the impeller!
Glad it helped
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka It definitely does - I have the gen 2 Alpha stern drive. It looks like the take-apart is easier compared to the gen 1 - just the 4 bolts and the 5th above the prop. Does that seem correct? I don't see the extra Allen bolts as shown in your video for the gen 1.
Well-done video. I suggest that at the very first part of the video, add a caption to tell folks to put the shifter in forward before removing the lower unit.
Good point. It doesn't have to be in forward to remove that part but, it helps so you can spin the shaft to put it back together.
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka wrong zippy
Great video Teacha ! Good filming and detailed explanations in detail as to installments of gaskets , tricks, parts to save a guy some moola , when you cant afford 100 bucks a hour shop rate . Cheers man Googster. Dawson Creek B.C. Canada
I looked up the town you are from. It's way up there. It looks kind of cool. Glad this video helped
And you did say repace imoellar in same direction that was removed !
Again your a lifesaver! Giving this a try. Thank you
I hope it goes easy. Good luck
Good video straight to the point and no nonsense. Thanks!
I use dish detergent to lube the impeller to install. Slick and dissolves in water once started. Marina told me to when I bought the impeller, worked slick.
Great idea
love the beer! Always gotta celebrate with a beer after she all works out!!! Thanks for the vid! Good job!
Thanks for the video 😀 i would never have found the bolt for the zink in the back 😂
Thanks man. That will be my next project.
i love your channel thanks for making these videos very helpful
Hats off to you! I’m so appreciative. I actually did it. I kinda freaked when the oil drained out. I didn’t know that would happen. No worries, I’ll watch the lower end oil change video & do it tomorrow.
Yeah I guess you are suppose to drain it first. In my case I drained it for winter
Glad you got it done. Enjoy boating
All done buddy , little tough getting unit back on but got er ! Thanks Chris
Hope you didn't have to fight it to much. Glad you got it done. Hope the boat runs good.
Well stuck it in the lawn like you and did the change over in my Wheel chair 😉 Cheers from Mile Zero of the Alaska Highway ! I have a few cooking videos on You tube Chris under Chef Danchuk
I am going to check out your videos. I am not the best cook. Lots of room for improvement
"This is gonna suck". I loved this part.
Lol. Truth
Your's is the best video I've seen on this. Great Job and thanks for Posting! I did our 1990 Baja 190 DSR Alpha 1 4.3L Mercruiser (looks just like your boat), prior to seeing your video, and watched this 2 days later to confirm. Your viewers will gain a lot from your explanation of dealing with the fasteners --how many, where they are, and in what order to remove. Great Job, great Vid!
Thank you so much Sir. Very helpful video.
Thank you !!! I'm doing this next on mine
Hey thanks for your videos good stuff made it a lot easier for me!!!!
Glad it helped
Great vid. Thanks for not dubbing in obnoxious music.
Boy OMC for the win on changing the impeller so much easier.
This is good and very helpful thank you.
Great videos. Thanks for posting them. Very helpful! “It’s gonna suck” 🤣
Thank you. Yes I see I have a problem. The weather has already changed, I will pull it apart in the spring. Please keep supplying me with the video’s. I’m not afraid to attempt it myself.
You can save a lot of money doing it yourself
Chris Boats I have no money, by I’ve got a nice boat 😁. I will be fixing myself.
@@cherylsims2053 The only reason why I can afford a boat is because I am able to fix them my self. I am in the same boat no pun intended.
awesome videos. after i watch these videos i feel you tube certified and go do the job. thanks for caring
Thanks brother, makes sense and always appreciate the help. Cheers
So I just did mine which was pretty easy. But there is a plastic sleeve that fits over the water tube that I forgot to put back on ugh. What is the purpose of this and is it ok to leave off?
And for the rest: when he says put it "in gear", make sure it's forward gear! The little gear shifter is a PIA to align with the part on the upper drive unit. In the end I unhooked my shifter cable and just rotated it by hand from the sterndrive to make it fit..
For aligning the shift cables later. Make sure that you harmonize the center of the cable strokes with each other.
I just finished my water pump kit, now need to mount it back up , but I didn't put it in gear when I took it off, should I put it in gear now ??
@@blackmagic6767 yes. Forward gear
Thank you, this video helped me alot.
Great
Thanks for great videos!!
thank you for this video, nice work
Does the bottom of the key sit above the gaskets. Mine wants to sit down in the gaskets a little.
I do not understand. What position should the brass shifter cable end be in on the upper unit? it seems to flop and jiggle in all directions. How do I keep in in the correct position while installing lower unit?
So I just did all n of this ibwent to put boatbin neutral and my shifter wouldn't go in reverse it finally did after a couple tuggs but now the handle spins all the way around in a full 360
Question underneath the rear is a big rubber in my boat have 2 holes that’s is BAD ??????
yes very good , doesnt matter clockwise or counter, housing will correct impeller . but yes would of installed it into housing clockwise. but still very good job. two thumbs up.
I agree
It is so easy to move the little spline , and then have it not align with upper shifter channel , the only way to make sure , is to lay down under outdrive take a flashlight and see if they are lined up straight and propeller is locked in forward.(counter-clockwise)
Great tip.
Great instructional info, thanks.
Thank you for the positive feedback.
My pump got so hot it melted. And other issues I should be looking for while it’s apart?
Is there a o ring, spacer or bushing under the plastic water tube?
Do you need to have the guide tube?
What happens if you forgot to put on that washer on top of the water impeller, ( everything else done) and its back together with oil in it :(
do you have a link for the impeller replacement kit?
Hi was taking my off and a metal plate fell off dont know where it goes
Hey did you put the boat in forward gear before you did this?
very well done loats of help thank s
Real helpful wish the leg would just pop off like that … new too me boat
My Impeller didn't come out with the cover. How do I get it off?
Only thing I wish you showed more is how all the gaskets in kit go
thanks for doing the video
Great video man!
Thank you sir
brilliant.....VERY NICE tutorial!!!! supurb!!
Do you have the link for the kit? Great video
Thanks man spot on!!!
should the water be warm 1ith 3.7 165hp
Excellent video !!!!
Did you put the drive in gear or neutral
Thanks
Great video!!
Hola, ayúdame tengo el mismo mercruiser y no me marca la velocidad, que pedo hacer?
Good job, thanks!
What kind of grease are you using
Run engine without oil in lower unit???
You put the impeller on put your key in and spin the prop counter clockwise. Lube with 2-4-c marine grease and bam the hosing goes right on and it's the correct way. Unlike yours which was put together backwards
Does cleaning the shaft breach YTs terms of service?;)
What size is the impeller? Or are they universal?
Very helpful thank you
You're welcome
Thanks for the video! I replaced the impeller just fine. Started up and it still doesn’t seem to be push water out the back of the boat. Instead I see a steady stream shooting out the small hole in the front side of the lower unit. Is something clogged? Any thoughts?
czcams.com/video/kgahSid2Oq0/video.html
I have a 2000 Bayliner with alpha one drive. It looks a little different than yours. I have gear oil leaking out of the water intake. Not looking forward to pulling it apart but I downy want to ruin it. Thanks for the video.
I believe after 1992 alpha made a gen 2. I have a gen 1
You are my hero
Thanks for the video. Just replaced the impeller following your steps (put the shifter in forward before removing the lower unit), and now with everything put back together the shifter is stuck in forward. Any idea what could be wrong? It's a Mercruiser Alpha one gen 1
You probably didn't line up the shifter bar in the hole
Great video, On mine there is a line coming from the bottom to the top and from the top to the bottom. Looks like it connects to the gether. Do not connect that back together?
Might be the speedo tube
dude your a bad ass!!!!
Just some advice. Its easier if you put the impreller on the shaft first then slide the housing on and you can spin the shaft with one hand and push down on the housing with the other and it will just pop right in as long as you put grease or soap.
Great advise.
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka yea im a boat mechanic and i don't work in mercruiser but thats how we do it with yamahas. But i currently own a boat with a alpha one so i was looking to see if it was any different
Nice job
Thank you!!!!!
Hey man what order did you do the other gaskets? I bought a kit and am trying to replace mine and don’t know the order. Oil has been leaking out the bottom of my water pump and no instructions came for the water pump kit. I thought it was the o ring and have taken the lower unit apart about 7 times now and I found it’s the bottom of water pump. Would appreciate it
I didn't take off the lowest gaskets in this video. The gaskets with the biggest holes go in first below the metal gasket. Sorry I wish I could show you. The oil gasket is the little tiny O ring. Make sure both sides are cleaned off and smooth. Maybe use steel wool
where are the outlet hole for water return
Good show! 5 stars
Also you will need to put oil back in the lower unit and you fill from the bottom up
I was pulling a tuber and the engine seemed to bog down and lost power. As I slowly went back to the shore, it seemed there was a vibration. What could the problem be? I have a 3.0 Mercrusier engine. Thanks!
Anything. Sounds like a fuel pump to me
Awesome video! Thank you so much!!!
My boat wont shift now. Sweet.
Just watched your video, a couple of?'s will the housing slide all the way down If the key is not aligned right ? I think I put the key in the groove put it was hard to tell , but housing fits flush ? THANKS..
If the propeller went over the key you should be good.
Try spinning it. If it's free it's not good unless it spins with the shaft
ow did you get the back geer selector to fall in to place
Iine it up
Is the shaft supposed to spin freely after installing impeller? Before putting it back with the upper half of the alpha one
If you took it out in neutral
I have a MerCruiser 140 hp that looks like yours and I'm trying to find the impeller parts and I ordered ones that were bigger than it's supposed to be, may I ask where you got your from? Where did you buy it from or the part numbers ? Thanks and please get back to me
I bought mine from a marina. West Marine
The best way to put the impeller on is.
First put all your gaskets etc on. Then put your key on, then slide the impeller down onto the key, and then put your housing on. That's the way they do it in service shops.
Hi Christ , so if the impeller not working won't pump water to the engine even if the water pump works ? Little bit of help please.
If the impeller is not working it will not pump water to the engine
So I just bought a boat last summer . Mine doesn't have the top bolt on the stern drive. What is the grey piece you pulled out of it? Mine has the slot for it but that piece is missing..? Thanks for any input. Great video.
I think if we are talking about the same thing it is just a plastic cap. The bolt should be inside. Even it it doesn't seem like it
@@BigIslandMNMinnetonka Thanks! After further research I think what mine is missing is the annode.
That could be.
Why do you think all my gear oil started leaking out once I removed the lower half assembly?
Cause it's goes in the top too. They are connected through a little hole
Hey what position did you put your transmission in? I did the same change but I’m not sure of the position because my throttle is in forward and my prop is spinning counter clockwise
It doesn't matter really. I put mine on forward though.
I have the same issue. Forward on the shifter is clock wise but when I lock the lower in forward it’s counter clockwise. I’m kinda stuck and lost any help?
@@brianwallace1803 why didnt you get a reply i have same issue
@@phillipehester2549 I figured mine out. But that was a year ago. Best I can remember you have to have someone hold the prop in the right direction. It’s aggravating and time consuming.
Hi, great video!
Is there another impeller in the engine room?
There is an actual waterpump on mine 3.0... so i gues the impeller just pushed the water up to the waterpump.
Do we have to drain the gear oil first ? I removed my lower unit today and as soon I took it off oil start dripping from top on the floor , was a big mess
Yes drain first.
Do you have a trick for getting the lower unit back on afterwards?
Spin prop so it spins shaft. Take your time. Maybe take a little break and come back to it. Make sure everything is lined up
did i hear you have to have it in gear??? cause i done took lower unit off and and that was not mentioned in the beginning!!!
You don't have to have it in gear.
What part number? Thank you
the last inch is a problem to reinstall any suggestion to ensure proper installation back?
Spin the prop. It was not fun but will finally , eventually go back in.
I have the same problem
